Social Studies 20 – Digital Badges

Geographical Thinking:

Given to students that can effectively


address social studies issues from a
geographical perspective. Students that have
gained this badge have demonstrated
effective spatial skills, understanding of
context of their environment, and
comprehension of questions regarding land
and water resources.

Historical Thinking:

Given to students that demonstrate their ability


to challenge their own perspectives and
assumptions of the past, present and future.
Students that have gained this badge have
presented skills in sequencing historical events,
placing events into context, and can apply their
understanding to various media sources.
Decision Making and Problem Solving:

Given to students that are able to


demonstrate their ability to make
appropriate and timely decisions through
the weighing of different perspectives
and consequences of their actions.
Students that have gained this badge
have shown exceptional ability to
develop thinking strategies, courses of
actions, and created potential solutions
for complex situations.

Creative Thinking:

Given to students that identify unique connections and


approaches to Social Studies. Students that have gained
this badge have generated insightful possibilities for
Social Studies content, and have demonstrated that they
have combined logical, intuitive and divergent thought.
Infusion of Technology:

Given to students that demonstrate competent


knowledge on the incorporation of technology
within Social Studies and applying it to relevant
content. Students that have gained this badge
have demonstrated their capabilities in
gathering and identifying information,
representations of dominant texts, classifying
and organizing texts, and speculating and
predicting historical events through the use of
infusing technology.

Critical Thinking:

Given to students that have promoted a


proficient process of inquiry, analysis
and evaluation resulting in a reasoned
judgement of historical events. Students
that gave gained this badge
demonstrated that they can distinguish
fact from opinion and the accuracy of
texts and media and finding bias within
text.
Media Literacy Skills:

Given to students that are able to consistently use different


mediums to communicate messages. Students that have
gained this badge are adept at accessing, interpreting, and
evaluating mass media texts.

Social Participation:

Given to students that demonstrate


excellent skills in developing effective
relationships with others and working
cooperatively towards common goals.
Students that have gained this badge have
demonstrated impressive skills in conflict
resolution, consensus building, and
collaborative decision making.
Metacognition:

Given to students that demonstrate


that they are able to ‘think about
thinking.’ Students given this badge
have portrayed prominent skills in
critical self-awareness, consciousness
reflection, analysis, and monitoring
themselves within Social Studies.

Oral, Written and Visual Literacy:

Given to students that have proved their


excellence in reading, listening, writing,
and viewing content in Social Studies.
Students that have obtained this badge
have demonstrated proficient skills in
using language arts to represent
community stores, historical events, and
narrative history to make better
understandings of themselves.
