The unit learning outcomes related to the labs are:
4. Apply transformation methods to the analysis of continuous and discrete signals and the
analysis and design of digital filters in the time and frequency domains.
5. Apply software tools to the design and analysis of signal processing systems.
EEE30004 has five lab experiments, which are selected MATLAB Projects from DSP First online
teaching resources, as below.
Lab1: Introduction to MATLAB
Lab2: Spectrograms of AM and FM Signals
Lab3: Sampling, Convolution, and FIR Filtering
Lab4: Frequency Response: Bandpass and Nulling Filters
Lab5: Interference Removal from Electro‐Cardiogram (ECG) Signals
Instructions, useful information and MATLAB codes (e.g., DSP‐First and DSP‐First MATLAB files,
installation instructions, and real data sets) for EEE30004 labs are available in the Learning
Materials/Lab Materials folder of the Unit Blackboard.
The lab experiments are scheduled fortnightly for each group of students. You must carefully
check the date and time of your lab sessions. Each student is required to complete the following
lab tasks individually before, during and after the lab session.
Lab Assessment
The assessment of EEE30004 lab performance is a 40% component of the whole unit
assessment. The full mark for each lab is 8 and the total full mark for the five EEE30004 labs is
40
The assessment of EEE30004 lab report is based on student’s independent understanding and
application of the methods and techniques, complete and accurate results of the lab tasks, and
clear analysis and representation of the lab results.
Lab Tasks
Each of the five lab experiments consists of three tasks as follows.
Task 1: Pre‐lab
The Pre‐lab works of each lab experiment are described in Section 1 of the Lab Instruction.
Before attending the lab experiment, students must follow the Lab Instruction to practice the
Pre‐lab works. Obtained analytical, numerical and graphical results and developed MATLAB
codes of the Pre‐lab must be saved.
It is noted that student must demonstrate completed Pre‐lab works to the Lab Demonstrator
before being allowed to attend the lab experiment.
Task 2: Lab Experiment and Homework
In each lab experiment, students are required to practice the works in Sections 2 and 3 of the
Lab Instruction. The Lab‐Homework, if required, can be completed after the lab session. Works

required on the Instructor Verification Page of the Lab Instruction must be completed. Obtained
analytical, numerical and graphical results and developed MATLAB codes must be saved.
It is noted that student must demonstrate completed works required on the Instructor
Verification Page of the Lab Instruction to the Lab Demonstrator before the end of lab session.
Task 3: Lab Report (with marking scheme – 10 marks 8%)
Each student must prepare and submit an individual lab report for each lab. The lab report must
include the following sections:
1. General Information (0 mark)
Unit code and title, title of the lab experiment, student name, student number, lab group,
lab date and name of lab demonstrator.
2. Objective, Methods and Techniques (0 – 2.5 marks)
Provide the objective(s) of the lab – what are the experiments trying to see/achieve?
Describe your understanding of the methods (provide your codes for each part of the lab
with brief comments), techniques and main mathematical equations/workings applied in
this lab.
3. Results (0 ‐ 7 mark)
Present the obtained results, including plots and graphs from the Pre‐Lab. (0 ‐ 2 mark).
Presentation of the obtained results, including plots and graphs from the Lab Experiment
and Lab Homework, as well as your comments on the results (0 ‐ 3.5 mark).
Compare and comment on the theory/pre‐lab findings with the lab experiment and Lab
Homework (0 ‐ 1.5 mark).
4. Conclusion/Summary (0 ‐ 0.5 mark)
A summary of the knowledge you have learnt and solutions obtained from the lab works.
5. Signed Instructor Verification Page of the Lab (it is noted that your lab report will not be
marked without a valid verification page).
Lab Report Submission Requirement
Each student must submit the individual lab report online to the lab demonstrator.
The submission of each lab report must be within ONE WEEK after completion of the lab
session.
Late submission without adequate reasons and prior arrangement is subject to a penalty of
one mark per day after the submission deadline. Request for extension must be supported
with special reasons and before the submission deadline.
Lab report without including the Signed Instructor Verification Page of the Lab is not
accepted.
Severe penalty is applied to plagiarism in lab report if found.
