Darwin s Contribution to Geology by Dr John Rogers, University of Cape Town.

The next in the Darwin Seminar series, which forms part of the bicentennial cele
brations of his birthdate,
deals with Darwin s contribution to Geology. Presented by Dr John Rogers of the D

ical observations and
theories that came from his visit to the Cape as part of his circumnavigation of
the world on HMS Beagle.
Although Darwin focused his attention on the life sciences he was a keen observ
er and made many geological
observations. What he saw in the Cape during his visit in 1836 and comparisons w
ith what he saw in
South America and Australia formed the core of subsequent theories.
The Darwin Seminar is a partnership project of the Africa Genome Education Insti

From: Linda Harrower
Subject: Use of a P Card by another staff member
Date: 26-May-2009

It has come to our attention that in some departments multiple staff members are
using a
card holder's P card (purchasing card). This practice is ILLEGAL according to i
nternational credit cards rules.
UCT P Cards are credit cards for which the card holder signs an agreement taking
responsibility for
all transactions on that card. The card holder may NOT hand over their card or
card number (and now the PIN number)
to another member of staff to use for their purposes. This is illegal and would
nullify any fraud claim if
the bank became aware of this practice.
If another member of staff has a need for a card they should apply for their own
card. A card holder may do a
transaction on behalf of another staff member, e.g. a conference booking, but sh
ould do it using their own card
and retain proof of the request to do that transaction (e.g. an e-mail) should
any queries arise.
Contact Sandra Williams by email (mailto:sandra.williams@uct.ac.za) or x4462 to
apply for a P Card or
for further information.

Call for grant applications in African research project on knowledge production
The University has launched an innovative, university-wide programme to promote
research capacity,
as part of a Carnegie-funded project to further institutional transformation. Un
der the banner
Programme for Enhancement of Research Capacity (PERC), the broad aim is to stimu
late research that
will produce new knowledge that is pertinent to the university s position in South
Africa, the continent,
and the world.
All academic staff are eligible. Applicants will need to demonstrate that their
research
contributes to this knowledge project (meta-project), within their fields, as de
scribed above.
Two donor-funded grants of R150 000 each will be made twice this year. This is t
he first call for applications,
with a second call to follow in October this year.
How is knowledge produced within a broad African, Diasporic and local South Afri
can context?

Ø The purpose of these grants is to stimulate the construction of new knowledge p

aradigms, underpinned
by theory and practice.
Ø The grants will support research that contributes towards assisting in shifting
the lenses from Eurocentric
to African models of scholarship, while recognising that both African and Eur
opean experiences
are multiple and mixed.
Ø Research into the nature of knowledge itself, therefore, will be supported and
open to many
fields within the university.
Ø Applicants need to demonstrate that their research contributes to this epistemo
logical project.
Ø Applicants should be engaging in collaborative, cross disciplinary research, wh
ich takes advantage of
our location in Africa
Ø Successful applicants should produce an edited book/ special journal issue/ at
least five articles in
accredited journals.
Ø They should demonstrate the participation of postgraduate students/ post doctor
al fellows in their
research project.
Ø They should run at least two workshops in the research office open to participa
nts across the campus.
Ø Diversity in researcher backgrounds will be an added advantage.
Ø Applicants may apply for a wide range of different kinds of support, such as co
nference funds,
research assistance, editorial input, workshop organisation, including bringing
distinguished visitors,
but not for materials or equipment.
Ø As much supporting evidence as possible needs to be supplied.

Closing date for first round of applications: 29 June 2009

Prior to application, expressions of interest or any queries should be directed
to Professor Brenda Cooper,
email Brenda.Cooper@uct.ac.za.

Professor Brenda Cooper will run a seminar for potential applicants on 1 June in
the Research Office Seminar Room,
2 Rhodes Ave, Mowbray, from 12h30 to 14h30. PERC will also run a full-day worksh
op on the nature of working
at this meta level of knowledge production. This will be held on 2 June from 09h00
to 16h00,
also in the Seminar Room at the Research Office.
Final applications should reach Roshan Sonday (roshan.sonday@uct.ac.za) electron
ically on or by 29 June, 2009.
