4.0 Weekly summary

9
4.1 Week 1 (7/1/2019 to 12/1/2019)
Project 1: Sensory Residence
Work tasks
I was assigned to rearrange and explore the tiling layout pattern of the drop off point in
Tower A. The goal is to match the design language of the lobby (designed by the Interior
designer) and the drop off point (which is under our scope of work).

Learning goals
1. Understanding the size of the tiles- 600mm x 600mm ceramic tiles, thickness 10mm,
threshold for cut tiles.
2. Experimentation on the colour scheme- Referring the types of colour from supplier
catalogue and sample to get a better impression of the item.
3. Adapting the existing design language- identifying the design language, intention,
colour scheme of the interior designer’s design.

Evaluation of learning goals

Apart from designing, the challenging part of this task is the setting out of the tiles when it
comes to area that doesn’t share the same sizes and maintaining the design language we
intended. I had a continuous dialogue with my senior, who ensured I am doing it correctly.
Although my input for this task is limited, I am able to complete this task alongside with my
senior guidance. I gained a clearer understanding of the procedure in tiling layout proposal
and the necessary details to pay attention to.

Figure 1.3 Tiling layout proposal

10
Project 2: Dato’s Ho Bungalow

Work tasks
I was assigned to amend the details drawings of the main gate and fencing and test out the
colour scheme on the house. The goal is to allow the contractor to understand the
construction method and materials used for the main gate.

Learning goals
1. Understanding the dimension, function and limitation of the material we specified for
contractor- consideration of the weight of the fiber board, resistance to
corrosion/coating, colour adhesion and etc.
2. Experimentation on the colour scheme- Referring the types of colour from Jotun’s
catalogue and specified them on the drawings.
3. Proper drafting technique for details drawings- following our company’s drafting
standard, plan, elevation and section drawings and proper annotation.

Evaluation of learning goals

Basically, details drawings is all about providing the necessary information for builders to
grasp and plan the whole construction process. The specification of the materials such as
fiber board, coating, colour are equally important as well, because it allows the contractor to
use the correct materials and estimate the cost of the construction work. I have also learned
that the selection of materials crucial as it can affect the workmanship and sustainability of
the end product.

Figure 1.6 Detail drawings to be issued to contractor

4.2 Week 2 (15/1/2019 to 19/1/2019)

Project 1: Sensory Residence
Work tasks
I was assigned plot all the tender drawings to be issued to other consultants.

Learning goals

12
1. The importance of tender drawings- A tender is a submission made by a prospective
supplier in response to an invitation to tender. Tender documents may be prepared for
a range of contracts, such as equipment supply, the main construction contract
(including design by the contractor), demolition, enabling works, etc

Evaluation of learning goals

The amount of details on tender drawings are insane. It is essential to know how each tender
drawings are interrelated to each other in order to read.
Project 2: Dato’s Ho Bungalow

Work tasks
After being revised by Ar. Chiam, I was assigned to amend the details drawings of the main
gate. This time round, the amendment are mainly on the sizes of the fiber board and mild
steel framework.

Learning goals
1. Buildability and maintainability- less maintenances product, light-weight materials to
ease the transportation and reduce the lifting during construction.

Evaluation of learning goals

Low maintenance product are favourable in the market because they are cost efficient. For
example, UAC Berhad offer decowood and decorative product that are made by cement. It is
not only durable but also flexible in design.

Figure 1.7 Sample of UAC Berhad’s product

13
Project 3: Aster Residence Cheras

Work tasks
Alongside with the Managing director, Ar. Chiam, and the interior designer, Benjamin (intern
trainee) and I was assigned to document and carry out data collection for tiles in Venicera and
Feruni.

Learning goals
1. Types of tiles in the market- ceramic tiles with polished surface, rough surface, glossy
surface to suit the design
2. Selection criteria- how the thickness of the tiles react to loading, new technology that
prevents the tiles from breaking and logistically easy to be handled by builders

Evaluation of learning goals

It is crucial for designer to have a realistic impression of the tiles in order to achieve the
closest outcome of the initial design and the consideration of laying of the tiles process.

Project 6: KLK Caledonia

Work tasks
Since this project is still in a design development stage, I was assigned to draw a simple
section drawings in order for the design team to carry out level study.

Learning goals
1. The sizes of the structure- column size 150mm x 150mm, beam size 150mm x
600mm, floor to floor height 3050m, floor to ceiling height 2700mm, brick wall
150mm, plastering 25mm.
2. Positioning of the structure- The entire process of structural planning and design
requires not only imagination and conceptual thinking but also sound knowledge of
practical aspects, such as recent design codes and bye-laws, backed up by ample
experience, institution and judgment.

Evaluation of learning goals

The structure to be constructed should primarily serve the basic purpose for which it is to be
used and must have a pleasing look. The building should provide happy environment inside
as well as outside. Therefore, the functional planning of a building must take into account the
proper arrangements of spaces to satisfy the need of the users.

15
Figure 2.1 Section drawings

4.3 Week 3 (22/1/2019 to 26/1/2019)

Project 6: KLK Caledonia

Work tasks
Since this project is still in a design development stage, I was assigned to explore the façade
design of the house.

Learning goals
1. Creativity- Design facades to have a pleasing scale, proportion and rhythm, and solid-
to-void relationship.

Evaluation of learning goals

Although didn’t manage complete this task, I am able to understand that the building
frontages and provides definition and enclosure of the street. This enhances the public realm
and frame the view for the users. Where buildings are set back, ensure the resulting outdoor
spaces are useable and attractive.

16
Figure 2.2 3D modelling of the façade.

Project 4: KLK Hemingway

Work tasks
The construction process of this project have been completed. I was assigned to label the
specified colour code that required to be issued to the contractor.

Learning goals
1. Specification of colour code- a detailed description or annotation of the colour code
from Nippon paint and work to be done

Evaluation of learning goals

Specification is a critical part of the construction process. It document what is important to be
pay attention and provides clear instructions on the intent, performance and construction of
the project.

17
Figure 2.3 Example of colour code specification

4.4 Week 4 (28/1/2019 to 1/2/2019)

Project 6: KLK Caledonia

Work tasks
I was assigned to double check through the set back line for each of the lot in the site plan to
be highlighted to the planner during the presentation meeting.

Learning goals
1. Understanding the Malaysian building code- building code specify minimum 10 feet /
3.05 meters setback from side and rear property line, and 20 feet / 6.10 meters from
street, also 10 feet / 3.05 meters of carport roof. corner lots usually have large
courtyard 6 meters wide in side of house.

Evaluation of learning goals

It is important for us as an architect to comply with the building code so that government
have provision for future necessary development or infrastructure.
18
Figure 2.4 The site plan of KLK Caledonia

Project 6: KLK Caledonia

Work tasks
I was assigned to colour the proposed layout for presentation meeting and had the opportunity
to join the meeting.

Learning goals
1. The importance of visual aid- simple and clear animation
2. Structured presentation format- highlighting only the important aspect of a subject

Evaluation of learning goals

I was fortune enough to witness this presentation meeting alongside with Benjamin (intern
trainee). I realized that presentation can be very simple yet powerful if you know how to
make full use of the visual aid. Selecting a good perspective to be presented to client is
crucial because it gives a good first impression of your work.

19

Figure 2.6 Pictures of proposed façade

20
4.5 Week 5 (11/2/2019 to 15/2/2019)
Project 1: Sensory Residence

Work tasks
I was assigned to improvised the tiling layout at the lift lobby, corridor and link bridge of
Tower A and B. The goal was to have a continuous and simple design and minimize the
number of cut tiles.

Learning goals
1. Exploring the layout in different programmes- Autocad, sketch-up and photoshop
2. Design intention- to give users a sense of direction and good articulation to the space
3. Construction- consideration of the cut tiles, setting out line, grouting, scupper drain
and etc.

Evaluation of learning goals

The challenging part of this task is the making sure the setting out line of tiles are align and
the need to minimize the cut tiles. Since we have a long corridor, the workmanship presents a
huge challenge to the contractor, so it is better to have the lesser cut tiles as possible to avoid
a wavy look of the corridor.

The requirement of the size of the cut tiles is not less than 50mm. Due to budget constraint,
the height of skirting is 75mm, so one piece of 300mm x 300mm tiles can be cut into 3 to 4
pieces in order to save cost.

Figure 2.6 Tiling layout proposal

21
4.6 Week 6 (17/2/2019 to 22/2/2019)
Project 1: Sensory Residence

Work tasks
After the design of the tiling layout has been approved by Ar. Chiam, my next task was to
amend the tender drawings according to the approved design. Thus, making the 3D model in
order sell our design to the client.

Learning goals
1. Tender Drawings- floor plan, blow up drawings, isometric drawings and etc.
2. 3D modelling- setting out the right perspective, making the model as realistic as
possible by paying attention to small details

Evaluation of learning goals

Throughout the process, I encounter a lot of problem which I am not knowledgeable and
experience enough to solve. Listening to the team’s discussion is an eye opening experience
for me because they are creative when it comes to problem solving.

Figure 2.7 3D modelling

23
4.7 Week 7 (25/2/2019 to 27/2/2019)
Project 1: Sensory Residence

Work tasks
27/2/2019 Wednesday was the submission deadline for the tiling layout. Once the design and
problem are solved, my task was to assist the team in production so we could email out the
items to the client for approval.

Learning goals
1. Communication- the practice of effective communication is able to minimise the risk
for mistakes and error.

Evaluation of learning goals

Working in a highly pressured environment requires determination, perseverance and
patience to communicate with each other. It’s a very rewarding experience for me although I
am not very happy with my contribution and performance in this task. But I still remain
positive and determine to take on a more challenging task.

5.0 Conclusion

This is my second time working with CLO Architects Sdn Bhd, it was very fulfilling for me
because I manage to see how I can contribute to this company as compared to my previous
internship with CLO Architects Sdn Bhd 2.5 years ago.

Throughout this 7 weeks, it is a very good exposure for me because I get to see how a real
architecture firm operate in real life and being able to free myself from some of the
architecture’s myths. I get to work alongside with experienced people who is very patient and
the willingness to teach me really impressed me. They inspired me to take on a bigger task
and challenge myself to the limit.

The amount of technical knowledge I gained throughout this 7 weeks is precious to me

because allows me to be more aware of the surrounding when I am in a three dimensional
world. I also get to know the demand of the market and what they are expecting from us as an
Architect.

To conclude, I believe architecture is a never-ending journey of exploration and there is

always room for improvement. Again, I would like to thank Ar. Chiam for giving me the
privilege and second opportunity to work alongside with him and his team.
