I.INTRODUCTION

This study sought to determine the performance of Grade IV pupils in Science

during the Division Periodical Test at MaticMatic Elementary School during the

school year 2015-2016.

THE PROBLEM

One of the concerns of our country today is the quality of education. This

is due to the fact that educational system in the Philippines produces graduates

in elementary level who cannot comprehend neither can perform simple

experiment in Science. (Marquez et. al. 2004). There is a perception that the

Philippines is lagging behind other Asian countries in Science. In the latest

International Science survey the Philippines is ranked 41 st in Science as poor

performer among the forty-five countries. This shows that we have a poor

quality especially in creating a curriculum for Science.

The study of Science can be a rewarding endeavor in much the same

sense as can the study of history, literature or music. Deocaris (2008) gave

emphasized that Science is a creative endeavor, they can learn better when they

sing and as they sing with ease, then they could learn concepts easier. Through

Science human can perform activities that may arise from experiences and
2

become integral parts of culture and society. Since, Science is a creative and

active process; its teaching should emphasize this nature. However, in many

classroom instances, this process is not nurtured for there are certain amounts of

information that must be learned for mastery. Moreover developing new Science

theories, concepts and system is aesthetically satisfying.

The need for Science education has become widespread and updated in

terms of techniques, methods and fitting current facts to the fast moving

technology world. Science objectives and purpose should rely on the

fundamental principles, to enhance problem solving, develop analytical thinking

skills, and application to daily life in promoting the spirit of discovery and

experiment.

The two aspects that characterized the science elementary education

according to Patacsil (1999), are the following: (1) The Time Aspect- by its

nature, elementary education has a medium to long term time frame of five to

ten years. Therefore, the efforts in science elementary education cannot be

expected to immediately contribute to the national economic, advance human

resources is in place can significant effects can be expected. Thus, if our country

is to embark on an honest to goodness science education program, the support

for it should be sustained and consistent over the long term. (2) Support for

Science Education- science education is expensive. The only way to make it

viable is for the government to support it. In all developed countries, the

government contributes substantially toward science education. Such support

3

comes in many forms; scholarships, equipment and library purchases,

maintenance, project grants, faculty, subsidies, etc. The absence of adequate

support for science education in the Philippines has driven our young talent to

study abroad instead.

This study may provide the science teacher a basis to evaluate growth

and program of the learners. Arouse the pupil’s interest to study more and eager

to learn, motivate them to transform into good quality of education, and well

guided citizens. It will also give them deeper insight in knowing their strength

and weaknesses especially in the subject Science. The result of this study will

inspire the Science teacher to engage in a different discovery methods and

strategies as Dr. Josette Biyo had done in her Science class in Iloilo. It may also

benefit the parents to evaluate and monitor the progress in the school.

Considering the present situation of science education in the Philippines,

particularly in the elementary level which is believed to be the foundation of

higher learning, the researchers were encouraged to conduct a study that will

investigate the level of performance of the Grade IV pupils in the Division

Periodical Test in Science at MaticMatic Elementary School for the school year

2015-2016.
4

Statement of the problem

This study aimed to determine the performance of Grade IV pupils in

Science during the Division Periodical Test at MaticMatic Elementary School

during the school year 2015-2016.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. sex

b. age

c. parents occupation

d. parents educational attainment

e. family size and

f. first, second and third grading rating in Science?

2. What is the performance of the Grade IV pupils in Science in the

Division Periodical Test?

3. Is there a significant difference between the Performance of the Grade

IV pupils in Science in the Division Periodical Test across the following variables

namely:

a) sex

b) family size?

4. Are there significant correlations between the performances of the

Grade IV pupils in the Division Periodical Test in Science in the first, second and

third grading rating in Science?

5

Significance of the Study

Result of this study will benefit the following important groups of

individuals in the teaching-learning process:

Pupils. The outcome of this study will help them to determine what to

improve and what to enhance on their academic performance. It will also give

them deeper insight in knowing their strength and weaknesses in Science.

Science Teacher. The result of this study will help the facilitator

motivate, inspire and evaluate pupils using the methods and strategies in

conducting paper-pencil test according to their grade level. Teaching can be

substantial and effective when the teacher utilizes innovative instructional

materials in relation to the objectives and strategies.

Administrators. The outcome of the study will serve as platform in the

reformation of the school programs, evaluate growth and progress of the pupils

in Science. It will provide strong basis in assessing the learners.

Parents. The study, will help parents to improve the performance of their

children by strengthening the weakness through proper guidance.

Future Researchers. The result of the study will serve as reference for

future researchers who will engage in similar studies.

6

Science Education

Haclao (2008),enumerated six ways in achieving the purpose and

objectives of science education. First, is to understand the basic principles, which

requisite in the learning process. Second, to develop problem solving to be able

improve or enhance ability in problem solving. Third, analytical skills, develop

logically and critically understanding. Fourth, the ability to apply them to the

problems of materials, this is resulted to environmental concern like recycling

and re-use of the things the learners can learn to give importance of resources.

Fifth, awareness in the environment, which focus on the environmental concern

that they learn as learner meets the things around them and through science

they will educate. Lastly, social living by promoting the spirit of enquiry and

experimentation, this is where application takes place as the learners gain

knowledge and apply the basic principles in their daily activities at home, school,

community and to the society.

Arellano (1995), supports the policies of education authorities. He believes

that science education is the development of human behavior resulting from

abilities, attitudes and understanding which enable the learner to interpret,

predict and control some forms, objects, and events in the natural environment.

Goals of Science Teaching

In 2006, Salandanan stressed that the prominent goals of science

teaching for the lower years around values and attitudes that are easily

developed at a young children to employ scientific ways of satisfying their own

7

curiosities and inquires should be a paramount goal which they carry up to

adulthood. Imbibed with science values they will be knowledge-driven and

science-minded throughout their lives. The goals of Science teaching serve as

guide in the preparation for Science lesson and activities are to: 1) Develops

scientific attitudes and values which best develop through modeling. Teachers

exhibit those traits in words and actions for as the learner grow, they exhibit

critical thinking abilities. 2) Acquire skills in employing the scientific method.

Learner inquires about their surroundings to develop adeptness in finding

answers in a systematic and methodical way. 3) Gain functional knowledge and

information. Knowledge of science facts, concepts and generations applied in life

as they find solution to their problems and arrive at their realization through

conclusions. 4) Arouse and sustain interest in future science-based pursuits. The

country is in need of science inclined manpower who could lead in science

promotion activities in the home and community and among others,

environmental protection and care, preservation of natural resources and

modernization of public and private institutions I terms of facilities and services.

5) Develop desirable social attitudes. The desirable traits of tolerance, respect for

the opinions of others and the willingness to accept criticisms and suggestions

which are exhibited by science-minded persons are worth developing among

children.

Haclao (2008), said that “A man without contact with the value of learning

what Science is and its manifestations will be a complete misfit in this modern
8

society”. Considering that everything is run by scientific discoveries and

inventions. Haclao added that teaching science in a classroom is no longer a

problem, but teaching science to each learner by a teacher, most of it is not

experts. Teaching science is relying on the teacher. Born teachers may need

some orientations for them to become real teachers, energetic, full of

enthusiasm, dedicated and committed to the teaching profession. In this regard,

teaching science becomes effective and appreciated.

Objectives of Science Education

Salandanan (1996) pointed out that the objectives of Science as a subject

required in elementary, secondary, and tertiary levels is to enable the

learner to acquire knowledge, gain skills and develop attitudes that can insure

science and technology literacy and self-reliance as well as in depth

understanding that can lead to further science pursuits.

Science Instruction on the curriculum

Based from Salandanan (2002), Science instruction as a part of the

curriculum, took up the cadged for the entire educational system in order to

contribute its share in preparing children who can think and act in a scientific

manner. Salandanan (2006), also drawn Science curriculum in basic education as

prescribed for the elementary level. In line with the goals of science teaching,

the concepts, contents was entirely interrelated and organized through Physical

and Biological Sciences. The science curriculum provides the necessary

boundaries of the concepts in which science falls under the division of learning
9

competencies for every grade level. First on the knowledge, skills and values

which is needed to spell out by means of behavior concepts and followed by

understanding higher concepts to more complex level.

Moreover, De Leon (2005) believes that learning science is an active

process. And learners learn best through investigation. De Leon aligned science

in Basic Education Curriculum which the concepts are presented in a language

suitable for the learner’s grade level. There are elements added in introducing

science in the learning process such as pictures and other graphic elements and

combined with the learning exercise to evaluate learner’s understanding

concepts. In the book Science Watch, Science is designed for Filipino elementary

learners to apply concepts and principles and develop scientific skills in their daily

living.

II. METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents a brief discussion and the method and procedures

that were used in this study. Specifically, it included the research design and

subjects of the study.

Research Design

The researchers used the descriptive method of research to answer the

sub-problems in this study. This method seeks to provide information about one
10

or more variables, Zulueta (2001.) In this study, the performance of the grade IV

pupils in Science in the Division Periodical Tests was considered.

Subjects of the study

The subjects comprised of thirteen ( males) and fifteen (female) with a

total population of twenty-eight (28) grade IV pupils enrolled during the school

year 2015-2016 at MaticMatic Elementary School. A total of twenty-eight (28)

Grade IV pupils were completely enumerated as the total population of the

study.

III. INSTRUMENTATION AND DATA COLLECTION

Data Gathering Instrument

The main data gathering instrument used in this study was the result of

the Division 1st periodical test in science composed of forty (40) multiple choice

types of items, 2nd periodical test in science composed of forty (40) multiple

choice types of test and the 3rd periodical test composed of thirty-five (35)

multiple choice and five (5) identification types of items. The profile of the

respondents was obtained using the questionnaire checklist.

11

Collection of Data

The researchers sought permission from the principal of Maticmatic

Elementary School to secure a copy of the result of the Division Periodical Test in

Science during the first, second and third grading. A questionnaire was prepared

by the researchers and was administered to the respondents.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data were subjected to appropriate descriptive statistics such as the

following:

For problem no.1 to determine the profile of the Grade IV pupils in terms

of sex, age, parent’s educational attainment and family size, frequency and

percentage were utilized.

The findings are summarized in the order of which the problems are

raised and the hypotheses posed in the study.

1. The respondents profile namely:

a. Sex. There were fifteen (54%) female respondents and thirteen (46%)

were male. Majority of the grade IV pupils were female and the least are male.

b. Age. There were nineteen (68%) pupils are under the age bracket of

9-10 years old followed by the seven (25%) under 11-12 years old and then two

(7%) of 13-14 years old. Most of the respondents is under the age bracket of 9-

10 years old and the least of the two are 13-14 years old.

c. Parent’s occupation. Seven (25%) of the pupils parents occupation are

farming and driving while four (14.3%) is carpentry. However, two (7.14%) of

the pupils parents occupation is selling and one (3.57%) is dress making,

electrician, midwife, cook, overseas Filipino workers (OFW), sales lady, security

guard and cosmetology.

d. Parent’s Educational Attainment. Fourteen (50%) of the respondents

parents educational attainment are graduates of tertiary level, while ten (36%)

are graduate in secondary, two (7%) are elementary graduate, while one (3.5%)

finished vocational course and (3.5%) undergraduate.

e. Family size. Thirteen (46.4%) of the respondents family size have 1-3

children in the family, while eleven (39.2%) of the respondents belong to a

family with 4-6 children, while four (14.3%) is under the bracket 7 and above

numbers of children in the family.

19

f. From the result of the Division Periodical Test in Science, the median

of the score is greater than the mean score which suggests that the pupil’s

performance score distribution is negatively skewed. The scores of the pupils are

widely scattered about their mean of 25.61 in the division first periodical test,

majority of the respondents scores was categorized as average. While the mean

of 27.82 in the division second periodical test, majority of the respondent’s

scores was categorized as average. Furthermore the mean of 27.5 in the division

third periodical test, majority of the respondents got 43% or described as high

but there are 21% of them described as low.

The researcher arrived at the following conclusions:

1. Majority of the respondents are female who are of 9-10 years old.

Most of the respondent’s parent’s finished the tertiary level. Majority of the

respondents have 1-3 children in the family and majority of the respondents

obtained a grade in science at an average of 83-88 which is described as good.

2. Most of the pupils performed average in the three division periodical

test.

3. The sexes and family size of the respondents have no bearing with

their science performance.

20

4. The school must upgrade their form of instruction especially in

Science through extending the time in teaching and exposing the pupils in some

experiential learning and new technologies which will motivate them to learn

better.

5. Teachers should design alternative measure to improve the pupil’s

performance by conducting tutorials, providing reading materials related to

Science education and giving extra activities and assignment which will enhance

their mental ability. These measures will be arranged in the teacher’s

consultation period.

6. The Science teachers of MaticMatic Elementary School must undergo

series of seminars and rigid trainings to improve the process of inculcating

Science concept which will result to excellent methods of teaching.

7. Other related researches should be conducted on other subjects like

Mathematics and English, integrating other variables that affect pupil’s

performance.
