Year 9 trip to the First World War Battlefields in Belgium

Tuesday July 13th 2010

The History department is proposing to offer a one day trip to the First World War
Battlefields around Ypres on Tuesday 13th July. This fully-guided tour is being organised
through Anglia Battlefield Tours and will be designed specifically to support the Year 9
history syllabus.

As part of the tour we will be visiting sites including Bayernwald Preserved Trench System,
Langemarck German Cemetery, Passchendaele Museum and Tyne Cot British Military
Cemetery. The day will conclude with the group participating in the Last Post Ceremony at
the Menin Gate. Students representing the school will have the chance to lay a poppy
wreath at the memorial. Another highlight of the trip will be a visit to the grave of Private
Peaceful, the soldier who was the inspiration for Michael Morpurgo’s eponymous children’s
novel. If your son has not read this highly moving book, I would highly recommend him to
do so before we depart for Belgium.

I am sure that each student who comes on the tour will find the day interesting, thought-
provoking and memorable.

We plan to leave school from Lexden Road entrance at 5am and expect to return around
12.30am. Parking for parents will be available in the morning and evening in the main close
via the Creffield Road entrance. Travel will be by coach via Eurotunnel. Your son will need
to bring a substantial packed lunch and plenty to drink. He will also need to wear
comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes and be prepared for hot weather (i.e. sun-hats and
sunscreen). The cost of the trip includes an evening meal to be taken in the main square in
Ypres. Students may bring reasonable amounts of spending money. The purchase of
Belgian chocolate for mums and dads is likely to be greeted with approval upon the
students’ return to Colchester!

All students will need to be in possession of an up-to-date passport and a European Health
Insurance Card. If they do not currently have an EHIC card these can be obtained through
the following website: www.ehic.org.uk. All students will be required to show a current
passport on the coach prior to departure, and I will make arrangements for EHIC cards to be
collected in advance of the departure date. Please ensure that you check to see that your
son’s passport has not expired.

Safety on all school trips is a high priority, and Anglia Battlefield Tours will be providing
us with a risk assessment document which will cover all our planned activities. There will
be a staff/students ratio on the trip of at least 1:10.
The nature of the locations that we will visit in Belgium means that students will need to be
well prepared in advance for what they are going to see. It is my intention to show the
students a DVD from the tour company giving them an insight into what they can expect.
Teachers will also prepare students for the emotional impact that a visit to the battlefields
can have.

It goes without saying that high standards of conduct are expected on all trips, and that
students are expected to behave appropriately while in the Commonwealth War Graves
Cemeteries and at locations where men lost their lives. If parents could reinforce this at
home I would be grateful. Any misconduct may result in your son not being accepted on
future school trips.

The cost of this trip will be £99.50, payable as a voluntary contribution. Whilst there is no
obligation to attend or to pay, the trip is unlikely to take place if all costs cannot be covered
by voluntary contributions. Those not taking part will be expected to attend school for
lessons as usual; those going on the trip will be expected to attend school on the day
following the trip, unless our return to CRGS is considerably delayed. If you would like a
place for your son, please complete the accompanying consent form and return it with your
cheque, payable to CRGS, to the reception post box.

Any queries concerning the trip can be made by contacting me at AClark@crgs.co.uk.
