The source suggests that Hitler was able to achieve his foreign policy aims
because of the failure of European leaders of democracies such as Britain and
France to oppose his actions. This is inferred by the representation of these
leaders as being ‘spineless’ and the illustration of Hitler, walking to power by
stepping over their backs. Britain and France both made no substantive
attempt to stop the German remilitarisation of the Rhineland in 1936 which
is labelled as a key ‘step’ in this cartoon. This was despite the fact that at
this point Hitler knew and feared that he did not yet have the military
strength to fight the allies if they made a military intervention to stop this
action.
The sources show Hitler could not be trusted and that British policy was
helping and encouraging him. we can see that he has already shot the
democratic Weimar Republic and mounted his head and has done the
same for the TOV. There is a nice detail that TOV is the most formidable
prize. The tall and weak looking member of the British Government and
the cowardly looking British lion shows the British Government being weak
and cowardly in its dealing with Germany.
The small guy represents the Prime minister of Britain who only has a few
lollypops and is surrounded by threating Nazi sea monsters. It looks like the
main in the middle is giving all he can in order to keep the sea monsters from
attacking him; the appeaser is trying to please the Nazi monsters from killing
him. As Hitler was annexing lands, Britain and France used the policy of
appeasement, figuring that rather than fight they would let Hitler "just take one
more" and there would be peace. Yet this only made him more aggressive
and determined. As in the cartoon, the creature offers the monsters "just one
more" and they can all settle down and be peaceful. Obviously from the look
of the monsters, this will not happen showing the act of appeasement is
unsuccessful and will lead to more aggression.
