1-A SHORT STUDY ON EZRA 6 - 10

THE REBUILDING OF THE TEMPLE (SECOND DECREE)

And the elders of the Jews builded, and they prospered through the prophesying of
Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they builded, and finished it,
according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment
of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia. And this house was finished on the
third day of the month Adar [Sabbath, March 12, 515 BC], which was in the sixth year
of the reign of Darius the king. And the children of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and
the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this house of God with joy,
And offered at the dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks, two hundred
rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve he goats, according
to the number of the tribes of Israel. And they set the priests in their divisions, and the
Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which is at Jerusalem; as it is written in
the book of Moses. And the children of the captivity kept the passover upon the
fourteenth day of the first month [Thursday, April 21, 515 BC]. (Ezra 6:14-19)

DANIEL 9:25

Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to
restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and
threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous
times. (Daniel 9:25)

There are three steps in the third decree.

Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment
[first step 1D 1M], to bring again [Heb. shuv] the people [second step 1D 5M] and to
build Jerusalem [third step 10D 7M], unto Messiah the prince, there shall be seven weeks
and threescore and two weeks: and the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in
the straightness of time. (Daniel 9:25, Bishops)
THE “GOING FORTH” AND THE “RETURN”

This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses,
which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request,
according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him. And there went up some of the
children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters,
and the Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king. And he
came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. For
upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the
first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his
God upon him. (Ezra 7:6-9)

And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there abode
we in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none
of the sons of Levi. (Ezra 8:15)

So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us. Then I
separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their
brethren with them, And weighed unto them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels,
even the offering of the house of our God, which the king, and his counsellors, and his
lords, and all Israel there present, had offered: I even weighed unto their hand six
hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels an hundred talents, and of gold an
hundred talents; (Ezra 8:23-26)

Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first
month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us
from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way. (Ezra 8:31)

“We shall again turn your attention to the Bible. Look at Ezra 7:11-13: "Now this is
the copy of the letter that the king, Artaxerxes, gave unto Ezra, the priest, the scribe, a
scribe of the law of God: perfect peace, and at such a time. I make a decree that all they of
the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites in my realm, which are minded of their
own free will to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee." This is the decree given when the
walls of Jerusalem were built in troublous times. See, also, Neh. 4:17-23. Ezra and
Nehemiah being contemporary, see Neh. 8:1. The decree to Ezra was given in the seventh
year of Artaxerses' reign, Ezra 7:7, and that to Nehemiah in the twentieth year, Neh. 2:1.
Let any one examine the chronology, as given by Rollin or Josephus, from the seventh
year of Artaxerxes to the twenty-second year of Tiberius Caesar, which was the year our
Lord was crucified, and he will find it was four hundred and ninety years. The Bible
Chronology says that Ezra started to go up to Jerusalem in the 12th day of the first
month, (see Ezra 8:31,) 457 years before the birth of Christ; he being 33 when he
died, added to 457, will make 490 years. Three of the evangelists tell us he was
betrayed two days before the feast of the passover, and of course was the same day
crucified. The passover was always kept on the 14th day of the first month forever,
and Christ being crucified two days before, would make it on the 12th day, 490
years from the time Ezra left the river Ahava to go unto Jerusalem”. William Miller’s
Works, Volume II, 53.

And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days. Now on the fourth day
was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the
hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of
Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui,
Levites; (Ezra 8:32-33)

THE “TO BUILD”

And they delivered the king's commissions unto the king's lieutenants, and to the
governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.
(Ezra 8:36)

Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of
Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the
people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites,
the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the
Egyptians, and the Amorites. For they have taken of their daughters for themselves,
and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of
those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass. And
when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair
of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied. Then were assembled unto me
every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of
those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice. (Ezra
9:1-4)
Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting
himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a
very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very
sore. And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto
Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of
the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing. Now therefore let us make
a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them,
according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of
our God; and let it be done according to the law. Arise; for this matter belongeth unto
thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it. Then arose Ezra, and made
the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this
word. And they sware. Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into
the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no
bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had
been carried away. And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem
unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together
unto Jerusalem; And that whosoever would not come within three days, according
to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited,
and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.
(Ezra 10:1-8)

And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates
and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as
know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not. And whosoever will
not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily
upon him, whether it be [1] unto death, or to [2] banishment, or to [3] confiscation of
goods, or to [4] imprisonment. (Ezra 7:25-26)

Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto
Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the
month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of this
matter, and for the great rain. (Ezra 10:9)
2-TWO CHIASMS IN 1844

MIDNIGHT

“While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there
was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those
virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.” Matthew 25:5-7. In the summer of 1844,
midway between the time when it had been first thought that the 2300 days would
end, and the autumn of the same year, to which it was afterward found that they
extended, the message was proclaimed in the very words of Scripture: “Behold, the
Bridegroom cometh!”
That which led to this movement was the discovery that the decree of Artaxerxes
for the restoration of Jerusalem, which formed the starting point for the period of the
2300 days, went into effect in the autumn of the year 457 B.C., and not at the
beginning of the year, as had been formerly believed. Reckoning from the autumn of 457,
the 2300 years terminate in the autumn of 1844. Great Controversy, 398.

Brother Snow thus questioned them; "Where are we in our Advent experience?"
Answer from the audience: "In the tarrying time."
Question: "How long was the vision to tarry?"
Answer: "Until midnight"
Question: "What is a day in prophecy?"
Answer: "A year."
Question: "Then what would a night be?"
Answer: "Six months."
Question: "Then what would Midnight be?"
Answer: "Three months."
Question: "How long have we been in the tarrying time?"
Answer: "Just three months."
He said, "Then it is just the midnight now, and I am here with the midnight cry." In a
few sentences he explained that it was the fall of 457 that the decree went forth, and so
they were short six months in their reckoning, showing them that the 2300 days would
terminate Oct. 22, 1844, instead of the spring as they had previously supposed. Then, in
a strong voice he said, "Behold the Bridegroom cometh on the tenth day of the seventh
month, Oct. 22, 1844. Go ye out to meet Him."1, 2

Loughborough mistakenly places this message at Exeter; however it would not have been three months that they had been in the
tarrying time. Bates places this message at about July 20. Froom provides the detail. “During January and February he [Snow] had
been preaching on the fall of Babylon and the coming of the Lord, as the Bridegroom to the "marriage," on the tenth day of the
seventh (Jewish) month, 1844. However, there was but little interest or response at the time. In April he located his family in
Worcester and went to New York, where hostility had lessened concerning the preaching of the seventh month of 1844— Miller's
"Jewish year 1843" having then expired. After three weeks in New York, Brooklyn, and Newark he went on to Philadelphia upon
request of George Storrs. In May he returned to Worcester, remaining until July 21. Then, by invitation, Snow preached that day in the
large Boston Tabernacle on the text, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh (on the tenth day of the seventh month), go ye out to meet
him!"” 1954 L. E. Froom, The Prophetic Faith of our Fathers, 802.
3-MIDST OF THE WEEK
DANIEL 9:26-27

A1 - And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself:

B1 - and the people of the prince [Titus] that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary;
and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

A2 - And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he
shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,

B2 - and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the
consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

“And for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate - This clause is
remarkably obscure. ‫ משמם שקוצים כנף‬kenaph shikkutsim meshomem, “And upon the wing
of abominations causing amazement.” This is a literal translation of the place; but still
there is no determinate sense. A Hebrews MS., written in the thirteenth century, has
preserved a very remarkable reading here, which frees the place from all
embarrassment. Instead of the above reading, this valuable MS. has ‫שיקוץ יהיה ובהיכל‬
ubeheychal yihyey shikkuts; that is, “And in the temple (of the Lord) there shall be
abomination.” This makes the passage plain, and is strictly conformable to the facts
themselves, for the temple was profaned; and it agrees with the prediction of our Lord,
who said that the abomination that maketh desolate should stand in the holy place,
Mat_24:15, and quotes the words as spoken δια Δανιηλ του φροφητου, by Daniel the
prophet. That the above reading gives the true sense, there can be little doubt, because it
is countenanced by the most eminent ancient versions.
“The Vulgate reads, Et erit in templo abominatio, “And in the temple there shall be
abomination.”
“The Septuagint, Και επι το ἱερον βδελυγμα των ερημωσεων, “And upon the temple
there shall be the abomination of desolation.”
“The Arabic, “And upon the sanctuary there shall be the abomination of ruin.””3

THE DESTRUCTION OF THE TEMPLE

It is interesting to note that the first temple (Solomon’s) was burned to the ground on the tenth of
Av (10D 5M) in 586 BC. We find this in Jeremiah.4

Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which was the nineteenth
year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, which
served the king of Babylon, into Jerusalem, And burned the house of the LORD, and the
king's house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, and all the houses of the great men, burned

Adam Clarke’s Commentary

“It appears from the parallel passage of 2 Kings 25:8, that Nebuzar-adan came from Riblah to Jerusalem on the seventh of the fifth
month; but it seems that he did not set fire to the temple and city till the tenth day, being probably occupied on the intervening days in
taking the vessels out of the house of the Lord, and collecting together all the riches that could be found. In memory of this calamity,
the Jews devote two fasts to this day; the seventeenth of the fourth month, which falls in June [or July], for the destruction of
Jerusalem, and the ninth of the fifth month [though oddly, not the tenth of the fifth month], which falls in July [or August], for the
destruction of the temple; both of which are mentioned by Zechariah as kept from this event till his time, a period of seventy years,
under the names of the fast of the fourth month, and fast of the fifth month.” Taken from The Treasury of Scriptural Knowledge (1880)
he with fire: (Jeremiah 52:12-13)

According to Josephus, this is the same date that the second temple fell in 70 AD.

So Titus retired into the tower of Antonia, and resolved to storm the temple the next
day, early in the morning, with his whole army, and to encamp round about the holy
house. But as for that house, God had, for certain, long ago doomed it to the fire; and now
that fatal day was come, according to the revolution of ages; it was the tenth day of the
month Lous [Av], upon which it was formerly burnt by the king of Babylon.5

Ellen White supports this account.

Titus would willingly have put an end to the fearful scene, and thus have spared
Jerusalem the full measure of her doom. He was filled with horror as he saw the bodies
of the dead lying in heaps in the valleys. Like one entranced, he looked from the crest of
Olivet upon the magnificent temple and gave command that not one stone of it be
touched. Before attempting to gain possession of this stronghold,he made an earnest
appeal to the Jewish leaders not to force him to defile the sacred place with blood. If they
would come forth and fight in any other place, no Roman should violate the sanctity of
the temple. Josephus himself, in a most eloquent appeal, entreated them to surrender, to
save themselves, their city, and their place of worship. But his words were answered
with bitter curses. Darts were hurled at him, their last human mediator, as he stood
pleading with them. The Jews had rejected the entreaties of the Son of God, and now
expostulation and entreaty only made them more determined to resist to the last. In vain
were the efforts of Titus to save the temple; One greater than he had declared that not
one stone was to be left upon another.
The blind obstinacy of the Jewish leaders, and the detestable crimes perpetrated
within the besieged city, excited the horror and indignation of the Romans, and Titus at
last decided to take the temple by storm. He determined, however, that if possible it
should be saved from destruction. But his commands were disregarded. After he had
retired to his tent at night, the Jews, sallying from the temple, attacked the soldiers
without. In the struggle, a firebrand was flung by a soldier through an opening in the
porch, and immediately the cedar-lined chambers about the holy house were in a blaze.
Titus rushed to the place, followed by his generals and legionaries, and commanded the
soldiers to quench the flames. His words were unheeded. In their fury the soldiers
hurled blazing brands into the chambers adjoining the temple, and then with their
swords they slaughtered in great numbers those who had found shelter there. Blood
flowed down the temple steps like water. Thousands upon thousands of Jews perished.
Above the sound of battle, voices were heard shouting: “Ichabod!”—the glory is
departed.
“Titus found it impossible to check the rage of the soldiery; he entered with his
officers, and surveyed the interior of the sacred edifice. The splendor filled them with
wonder; and as the flames had not yet penetrated to the holy place,he made a last effort
to save it, and springing forth, again exhorted the soldiers to stay the progress of the
conflagration. The centurion Liberalis endeavored to force obedience with his staff of
office; but even respect for the emperor gave way to the furious animosity against the
Jews, to the fierce excitement of battle, and to the insatiable hope of plunder. The

soldiers saw everything around them radiant with gold, which shone dazzlingly in the
wild light of the flames; they supposed that incalculable treasures were laid up in the
sanctuary. A soldier, unperceived, thrust a lighted torch between the hinges of the door:
the whole building was in flames in an instant. The blinding smoke and fire forced the
officers to retreat, and the noble edifice was left to its fate. { GC 33.2}
“It was an appalling spectacle to the Roman—what was it to the Jew? The whole
summit of the hill which commanded the city, blazed like a volcano. One after another
the buildings fell in, with a tremendous crash, and were swallowed up in the fiery abyss.
The roofs of cedar were like sheets of flame; the gilded pinnacles shone like spikes of red
light; the gate towers sent up tall columns of flame and smoke. The neighboring hills
were lighted up; and dark groups of people were seen watching in horrible anxiety the
progress of the destruction: the walls and heights of the upper city were crowded with
faces, some pale with the agony of despair, others scowling unavailing vengeance. The
shouts of the Roman soldiery as they ran to and fro, and the howlings of the insurgents
who were perishing in the flames, mingled with the roaring of the conflagration and the
thundering sound of falling timbers. The echoes of the mountains replied or brought
back the shrieks of the people on the heights; all along the walls resounded screams and
wailings; men who were expiring with famine rallied their remaining strength to utter a
cry of anguish and desolation. { GC 34.1}
“The slaughter within was even more dreadful than the spectacle from without.
Men and women, old and young, insurgents and priests, those who fought and those who
entreated mercy, were hewn down in indiscriminate carnage. The number of the slain
exceeded that of the slayers. The legionaries had to clamber over heaps of dead to carry
on the work of extermination.”—Milman, The History of the Jews, book 16. Great
Controversy, 32-35.

But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the
glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, And said, Behold, I see the
heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Then they cried
out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, And
cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a
young man's feet, whose name was Saul. And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and
saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice,
Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep. (Acts 7:55-
