Reply delay measurement DME 415/435.

1. Connect Oscilloscope CH1 to MON test point AN 34

(Interrogation)
2. Connect Oscilloscope CH2 to MON test point AN 71
(Trigger).
3. Select menu Checks Standard Measurement on
Monitor 1

Note: We have used Oscilloscope HM 1508 in digital

mode and we have connected test point AN 71 to Ext.
Trigger of oscilloscope.

See picture below:

Set:

Interrogation Pulse level 1000 NSFA Active

All other values set to Idle!!! Select OK to activate
monitor Interrogator.
Interrogation pulse has to be fixed on the oscilloscope on
his 50% of amplitude. Use measurement menu in
oscilloscope and set reference on oscilloscope screen to
50 µs. After fixing of reference Interrogation pulse, abort
Standard measurement menu.
Select menu Checks Standard measurement on
Antenna.

Set all values to Idle!!!

Modify Reply Delay Variation with level to Active and

set NSFA to 1000
The reply pulse will be then measured at the same point
on MON (AN 34) like interrogation pulse.
To provide this measurement is not necessary to switch
DME to Maintenance mode.
To confirm, that measurement of Reply delay was
correct will be possible now to change reply delay for
example to 40 µs in Transponder parameters. After that
repeat measurement Reply Delay Variation with level.
Now you can see, that Replay delay has changed to other
value.

This method is exactly the same like monitor is doing in

automatic continuously mode. Interrogation and Reply
pulse is measured at the same measuring point AN 34,
because it’s detected also in the same point of DPX. See
the detail block diagram of DME 415/435 prepared by
Mr. Rusconi 23-03-2006.
