1) Characterize (as adiabatic, isothermal etc.) each of the four steps of the PV diagram that
was generated during an experiment. – 10 Points

Answer 2), 3) and 4) for any one experimental condition (TH, TC). Include standard deviations.

2) List P, V and T values on each of the four corners of the PV diagram. – 20 Points

3) Calculate Q, W and ΔU for each of the four steps. – 30 Points

4) Find ∑ΔU over the entire cycle and comment on its value. – 10 Points

Answer 5) for all nine experimental conditions (TH, TC). Include standard deviations

5) Calculate the following efficiencies – Carnot, thermodynamic and actual. Comment on

their relative values. Thermodynamic and actual efficiencies can be calculated as |W|/QH,
where |W| is the net work done by the gas in the engine and QH is the heat provided to the
gas at the higher temperature TH (QBC + QCD). Thermodynamic work will be the area
under the curve in the PV diagram and actual work will be that done in lifting the weight
from one height to another. – 30 points
