A comparison of Romeo and Juliet: Movie vs play (Act 1)
Romeo and Juliet is a famous play of Romeo and Juliet. The story of two lovers who
were affected because of their family’s inveterate feud between each other shaped the concept of
love in the modern world. The movie of Romeo and Juliet had some changes when compared to
the play. This will show some of the changes in the movie and the play and also the similarities
of the two.
The first act told us that the place where the story would take place were in Verona. Two
Capulet’s servants, Sampson and Gregory tried to provoke a Montague’s servant, Abram. Prince
Escalus stopped the fight and threatened that whoever tried to disturb the peace, life would be the
penalty. Romeo at this time had a lovesick with Rosaline. Paris, the suitor of Juliet, went to Lord
Capulet to request the hand of Juliet where Lord Capulet reclined and asked for two more years
before marrying Juliet. Lady Capulet told Juliet that she would be married which that time the
nurse of Juliet was very excited even though Juliet had not thought of it before. The Capulet had
a party where they asked Peter, the illiterate servant to invite all the people in the list. Romeo
alongside with his cousins and friends broke in to the party because Romeo saw Rosaline’s name
and Benvolio wanted Romeo to forget about Rosaline. Tybalt saw them, a Capulet, and planned
to kill Romeo but Lord Capulet asked no more fight that time. Romeo saw Juliet and they
exchanged conversation. At the end, they discovered that their family had feud between each
other.
The movie and play had some significant changes. It includes the reason why Benvolio
asked Romeo to go the party and the illiterate servant. The movie showed that Benvolio asked
Romeo to go to the party to see Rosaline and he would help him but when Benvolio was in the
party, he directed his attention to other girl leaving Romeo alone in which that time, he saw
Juliet but, in the play, he asked Romeo to let Romeo think that Rosaline was not a special girl
compared to other women. The movie didn’t show the illiterate servant where he asked for the
help of somebody to read it for him and this was the reason why the Montagues discovered the
Capulets’ party.
The movie still justified the differences and the changes they made because it was not too
noticeable. The changes, though, made some parts of the movie to be not related or different
from the original account of Romeo and Juliet.
At last, the movie and the play did not have too many differences so the story line of the
original account was not changed except for some concepts and ideas.

A comparison of Romeo and Juliet: Movie vs play (Act 2)
Romeo and Juliet is a famous play of Romeo and Juliet. The story of two lovers who
were affected because of their family’s inveterate feud between each other shaped the concept of
love in the modern world. The movie of Romeo and Juliet had some changes when compared to
the play. This will show some of the changes in the movie and the play and also the similarities
of the two.
The second scene tells us that Romeo was in the balcony of Juliet and Juliet was
disappointed of the news that Romeo was a Capulet. Romeo went to show up to Juliet and they
exchanged conversations and they exchanged kisses. The nurse interrupted the conversation of
Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Benvolio with his friends where teasing each other when the nurse
of Juliet entered and Mercutio provoked her to anger. Romeo told the nurse to tell Juliet to go to
Friar Laurence’s cell that afternoon to be married. Friar Laurence was at first hesitant to marry
the two but agreed to marry them because he thought that it would stop the conflict between the
two families. Romeo and Juliet were married.
The movie and the play were just the same because the movie did not change anything
when compared to the play. The movie showed everything that the act should show. There is
unfortunately, a little difference and that is the place where it happened.
From the movie, the place where Romeo and the nurse talked about the marriage was
inside the church but in the summary, it was not shown.
The second act by far is the most accurate part because the movie didn’t change much of
the ideas and even the characters were portrayed the same way the play was written. the balcony
part of Romeo and Juliet was the highlight of this act and when it was to be compared to the
movie, it was very similar to the play.
At last, even though the changes of the place were made in the movie, it has still showed
us the true happenings and it didn’t totally change at all. This is the act that had the best
similarities of the movies and the play.

A comparison of Romeo and Juliet: Movie vs play (Act 3)
Romeo and Juliet is a famous play of Romeo and Juliet. The story of two lovers who
were affected because of their family’s inveterate feud between each other shaped the concept of
love in the modern world. The movie of Romeo and Juliet had some changes when compared to
the play. This will show some of the changes in the movie and the play and also the similarities
of the two.
This act shows that Mercutio and Tybalt fought and Tybalt killed Mercutio. Romeo felt
angry about it and killed Tybalt. The prince ordered Romeo to be exiled. Juliet had no idea about
Romeo’s killing Tybalt but when the nurse entered, the nurse was shouting the name of Romeo.
Juliet thought Romeo died but discovered the truth at last. The nurse entered to the cell of Friar
Laurence and they both saw Romeo crying and decided that he would just kill himself. Friar
Laurence let Romeo to go to visit Juliet but told Romeo to be away of Verona before dawn. Lady
Capulet entered in the room of Juliet and told her that she would be marrying Paris which she
refused. Her father got angry at her and said that he would disown her. Juliet asked for the
nurse’s advice but it didn’t alleviate the feelings of Juliet. Juliet decided to go to Friar Laurence
to ask him of what to do.
The movie did not show some of the real lines of the original play so it appeared to be
different from the original play. It didn’t really change the original play but it cut down some of
the important details.
In the movie, Tybalt and Mercutio had a friendly battle and it was not the intention of
Tybalt to kill Mercutio but in the original play, Mercutio said that if Romeo would not want to
draw his sword then, Mercutio would. this was a big part or difference with the reason of why
they fought at the first place. Tybalt was teasing Romeo but Romeo did not want to fight so
Mercutio was the one who fought Tybalt but, in the movie, they agreed that it would be a
friendly battle.
Even if the movie had made some changes, the movie still showed many similarities in
the play. The happenings were still the same but only changed part was the reason of it. The
overall act three of the movie when compared to the play was just the same because it did not
change the plot of the story or it was not the reason for the movie to have a great difference.
Finally, the difference in the story somewhat changes the concepts of the original account
but, the plot is still the same. It still gives the viewers the clear view of the third act.

A comparison of Romeo and Juliet: Movie vs play (Act 4)
Romeo and Juliet is a famous play of Romeo and Juliet. The story of two lovers who
were affected because of their family’s inveterate feud between each other shaped the concept of
love in the modern world. The movie of Romeo and Juliet had some changes when compared to
the play. This will show some of the changes in the movie and the play and also the similarities
of the two.
In the fourth act, it tells us that Juliet went to Friar Laurence and he gave her a potion that
would mimic death. Juliet went to her father and apologized so her father decided that the
marriage would be on Wednesday, the next day. Juliet took the potion even if at first, she was
hesitant. The nurse saw Juliet’s body and called Lord and Lady Capulet. Lord and Lady Capulet
were very sad about the shocking event. Juliet was buried.
In the movie, the fourth scene lacked some of the important time periods. It did not show
the time of when it happened so it wasn’t clearly elaborated in the movie when compared to play
where it had the time. The changes of the time periods did not really make lots of changes but
some of the lines and happenings were also changed or somewhat not shown.
The movie did not show that Lord Capulet moved the marriage the next day. This
changes the time period of the story because it was not clear to the viewers the day when it
actually happened. The movie appeared to show that the marriage was not moved and that
servants were not really busy for the marriage.
The thought of the movie and the play was just the same when you try to compare them
except that in the movie, the information given like the time period was not so accurate so it
appeared to be different in the play but still they have lots of similarities because the story line
was still the same and the plot of the story was not changed at all.
Finally, in this act, the only difference I saw was the time period of the marriage of Juliet
and Paris but everything aside from that was similar.

A comparison of Romeo and Juliet: Movie vs play (Act 5)
Romeo and Juliet is a famous play of Romeo and Juliet. The story of two lovers who
were affected because of their family’s inveterate feud between each other shaped the concept of
love in the modern world. The movie of Romeo and Juliet had some changes when compared to
the play. This will show some of the changes in the movie and the play and also the similarities
of the two.
The last act tells us that Friar Laurence ordered Friar John to give the letter to Romeo in
that time, Balthasar, the servant of Romeo, already told Romeo the death of Juliet. Romeo
decided to go to the apothecary to buy a poison. At first, the apothecary didn’t want Romeo to
give the poison but Romeo gave him money so he was convinced to give it to him. Romeo went
to Juliet’s tomb where he met Paris. They had a fight and eventually Paris was killed by Romeo.
Friar John went back to Friar Laurence and told what happened so Friar Laurence tried to go to
Juliet’s tomb to wait for Romeo and tell Romeo what had really happened. When he was in the
tomb, he saw that the tomb was open and Balthasar was already there waiting for Romeo. Friar
Laurence went inside and saw Romeo on the ground dead. That time, Juliet woke up and saw
Romeo. Friar Laurence told Juliet to go with him because the prince and watchers might see
them but Juliet refused to go with him and got Romeo’s sword and stabbed the dagger into her
chest. Lord Montague and Lord Capulet saw the two and Friar Laurence told everything to the
prince. Lady Montague was already dead because she was heartbroken about Romeo’s exile. The
prince blamed the two families about their dispute and they agreed to keep the peace.
In this part, the movie did not show much of the important events. Some important
happenings were also changed and some were not shown in the movie. this changed the part of
the movie and the play but the end was almost the same except for some unrelated characters at
the last part of the movie.
The part in the play which was not shown in the movie was the fight between Paris and
Romeo. It wasn’t shown that Romeo and Paris had a fight and Romeo killed Paris. The other part
different form the movie and the play was the part when Lady Montague was still at the last
scene of the movie and she was in the Romeo’s and Juliet’s funeral well in fact, the play says the
opposite. Lady Montague was already dead that time.
The movie still showed what had really happened in the end but some of the important
things were not shown and some were changed and even some of the characters were no longer
related or already existing in the original play but, were still in the last part of the movie.
Finally, the movie made similar ending but they lacked some of the important features
and events that were shown and described in the original play and some characters were still in
the scene but they should no longer be there. But still, the movie made a successful drama of the
play and they still showed the morals of the story- Love and Peace.

Characters of Romeo and Juliet: Movie vs play
Romeo and Juliet was a tragedy made by William Shakespeare where two young star-
crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconciled their feuding families. It was among
Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and along with Hamlet. In the play that he
made, there are lots of characters with different personalities and characteristics shown. This is a
comparison and contrast of the characters in the movie and the play of Romeo and Juliet.
The movie and the play showed the same characters and also the characteristics were also
the same except for some lines used in the movie different from that of the original play. The
characters include, Romeo and Juliet, the protagonists of the story, members of two feuding
families, Montagues and Capulets. Peter, the illiterate servant of the Capulet’s family. Friar
Laurence, a Franciscan Friar, friend to Romeo and Juliet. Kind and civic-minded. Mercutio, the
friend of Romeo. Benvolio, the cousin of Romeo. Sampson and Gregory, the two Capulet’s
servant who started the dispute. Tybalt, the cousin of Juliet, a Capulet. Lord and Lady Capulet,
parents of Juliet. Paris, suitor of Juliet. Abram, Montague’s servant who fought with Sampson
and Gregory. Friar John, the one who was asked to sent the letters. Balthasar, the loyal servant of
Romeo. The Apothecary, Romeo bought the poison. Rosaline, the woman whom Romeo was
infatuated at the beginning of the play. The chorus, the narrator. And Prince Escalus, the prince
of Verona.
One major difference of the movie and the play was that, the movie made Benvolio
appeared to be an instrument for Romeo and Rosaline to see each other where in fact, the real
reason why Benvolio persuaded Romeo to go to the party was to forget Rosaline. Peter and also
the apothecary were not shown in the movie and they did not make any appearance making some
parts of the movie different from the original play. Sampson and Gregory, although they were
shown in the movie, were not really emphasized that they provoked Abram, a Montague’s
servant to fight.
The different lines used in the movies changed some parts of the movie and even the
concepts. This may lead to confusion of the real account of Romeo and Juliet but still, the movie
somewhat justified them.
At last, the changes of the story made some confusions when the movie was to be
compared to the play but the movie did a great job of portraying the characters and putting into
actions the characters of Romeo and Juliet.

General Analysis of Romeo and Juliet: Movie vs play
Love is maybe the best feeling of being alive but this can also be the most painful one.
But don’t lose hope, love is a very powerful thing that could change anything. True love is
something that everyone of us wants and long for. This is maybe something everyone sings for,
wept for, read, or talked about. We can see this everywhere we go in different definitions but the
same context and the same meaning. This is still a mystery and everyone wants to be involved
but, how painful can love be? Are sufferings inseparable with love? Romeo and Juliet, a play
made by William Shakespeare, contributed a lot and it defined how true is true love.
Romeo and Juliet was a tragedy of two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately
reconciled their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his
lifetime and along with Hamlet.
The movie and the play of Romeo and Juliet have the same in common but at the same
time there are also some changes in the movie. Some concepts and important events were not
shown or not emphasized. Time period in the movie were not also properly stated when
compared to the movie. some of the lines were also changed making confusions to the real play.
Some changes of the movie include the reason why Benvolio was trying to persuade
Romeo, the illiterate Capulet’s servant, Friendly battle between Mercutio and Tybalt, Lady
Montague appearing until the last scene of the movie, day of Paris’s and Juliet’s marriage and
the fight scene between Paris and Romeo.
The characters in the movie when compared to the play didn’t have much changes and
they were almost the same except for the lines of Benvolio that made some parts confusing but,
when we are trying to talk about how the movie portrayed the characters in the play, I can say
that the movie has a successful drama of the play.
I learned that it’s much better to keep peace and to forgive each other. I learned that love
is not a child’s play; rather, a very serious topic that everyone should be responsible when
entering to this kind of situation. I learned that love can do more things not only can it affect
someone to go forward and to continue living but also, to forget everything and do everything for
your love one even if this can cause your life. True love is like a drama. It has its happiness,
difficulties, and sadness but at last, the ending depends on the characters which is in our case, we
are the characters of our own play and story.
Finally, Romeo and Juliet proves that death can not intervene and will never be the
reason to stop loving. It is rather, a reason to continue loving and fight for it at any cost. There is
a saying from Gibran, “For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.” This is a
saying that tells us that in life, death, love and sufferings are parts of the colorful journey of
everyone’s life. This is something that we should be thankful to our creator.
