The Isle of Palms Exchange Club gratefully

the VFW Post 3137 for their part in creating
this “Fun-Raising” event. It’s a crawl, it’s a raffle
and a great chance to thank your local favorite

r. Nicole Elko did her undergraduate
work at Penn State, and earned both a
Masters and a PhD in coastal geology
from the University of South Florida.
She felt there was a void she could fill in
shaping SC’s beach management policy,
so she established the South Carolina
Beach Advocates (SCBA) in 2015. The
nascent organization has been gaining
traction since then. It reached its full
bloom during the annual meeting held at
the Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms,
Feb. 11 and 12.
SCBA’s mission is to educate the
public, regulatory authorities, and elected
officials on the environmental, economic,
and societal impact of South Carolina's
beaches and inlets.
“This is the state’s only organization
formed by elected officials to represent
the state’s beach communities. The
organization’s mission is to educate
decision makers and the public as to
the economic, environmental, and civic

ouncil chambers were
filling fast in the run up
to the Feb. 19 meeting of
the Town of Sullivan’s Island
Council. Handshakes and
hugs cascaded through several
clutches of residents, and the
din of celebratory conversations
overwhelmed the ears. Mayor
Patrick O’Neil had to use his
“outdoor” voice to announce
the meeting’s start at precisely
6 p.m., and the cause of the
jubilance didn’t become clear
until after citizen’s comments.

“This year’s meeting included
keynote speeches by dignitaries
from the Governor’s office, the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
and the South Carolina Office
of Ocean and Coastal Resource
Management (OCRM). But
perhaps more importantly,
the meeting includes time for
each South Carolina beach
community’s leaders to speak
about the beach preservation
efforts they undertook this year.
We’ve had a lot going on the last
couple of years,” Elko stated.
The South Carolina Beach
Advocates is an incredibly
efficient group. Elko is the only
staff member, but she lavishes
praise on her board of directors.
She says they are invaluable
in setting up meetings, getting
the word out about SCBA news
and events, and facilitating
membership.
Elko’s organization gets
the bulk of it’s funding from
individual memberships (visit
SCBeaches.org/join for details).
However, the SCBA does get some
funding from the state of SC and
the federal government, as well.
“The Army Corps of Engineers
considers beaches a component
of infrastructure they refer to
as ‘Coastal Storm Reduction
Projects.’ Of course, they [the
beaches] have recreational
benefits. Sure, they have tourist
benefits, and critical habitat/
ecological benefits. But the
preservation of private property
and public infrastructure is how
they justify beach preservation,”
said Elko.
Dr. Elko, has been appointed
to the South Carolina Floodwater
Commission to work to
alleviate coastal and riverine
flooding impacts in the state.
The organization promotes
the message: “South Carolina
Beaches are a statewide treasure
that require a strategic, long-
term investment in cyclic
maintenance.”

messenger and repository of all
things beach related, but without
the chairs and umbrellas. For

a wild card into the main
draw of the Volvo Car Open.
The 26-year-old Charleston
native will compete in her first
tournament since March 2018’s
BNP Paribas Open, where she
suffered a knee injury. The Volvo
Car Open is scheduled for Mar.
30 – April 7 on Daniel Island in
Charleston.
“I am beyond excited for the
opportunity to compete again at
the Volvo Car Open this April,”
said Rogers. “Charleston is where
it all began for me, so it is extra
special to start my comeback
here with the support and
encouragement of my hometown,
friends, and family. A big thank
you to Bob Moran and Eleanor
Adams for a wild card and the
chance to make more memories
at my favorite WTA event.”

In 2010, Rogers made her
debut in the Volvo Car Open
tournament when she competed
in its qualifying rounds. During
the 2017 tournament, she
reached the quarterfinals,
defeating the No. 1 seed and
playing in four thrilling matches,
three of which were decided in
three sets.
The 2019 Volvo Car Open will
be Rogers’ ninth time competing
in the tournament.
The nine day Volvo Car Open is
the largest women’s-only tennis
tournament in North America
and attracts an average of 90,000
attendees and more than 100
of the top singles and doubles
tennis players.

LCFB hosts 20th gala event
LOCAL CHEFS SUPPORT CHILD HUNGER PROGRAMS

T
he Lowcountry Food Bank's 20th
annual Chefs' Feast gala, which took
place on Sunday, February 10, set a
new record at $450,000 for donations that
support the fight against childhood hunger.
More than 750 community partners and
guests attended the annual event. Three
generous supporters donated $20,000 each
to commemorate the 20th year of Chefs'
Feast.
Chefs' Feast is a school, weekend and summer hunger for
collaboration between the
Lowcountry Food Bank and
nearly 30 of the community's
most celebrated chefs
who offered up delectable
bites for guests to enjoy.

and Summer Meals - which alleviate after
children throughout the coastal counties of
South Carolina.
Unfortunately, one in five children
throughout the Lowcountry experiences
hunger. Through support from Chefs' Feast
and community partners, the Lowcountry
Food Bank served 79,721 meals to children
last summer alone. The BackPack Buddies
program served 136,655 backpacks last
year and more than 325,838 Kid's Café
meals were served to thousands of children.
"We are grateful for the generosity of
chefs throughout our community," said Pat
Walker, Lowcountry Food Bank President
and CEO. "Chefs' Feast helps us actively
fight childhood hunger to ensure that our
youth can live healthy lives."

Wildlife Exposition’s official 2019
lineup.
The sold-out fashion show luncheon
honored the legacies of John James
Audubon, a consummate conservation
hero and exquisite wildlife artist, and
Harriet Lawrence Hemenway and
Minna Hall, whose grassroots activism
helped change the course of the
fashion trade while paving the way for
one of America's greatest conservation
laws and helping launch the National
Audubon Society.
“SEWE has a long and storied
tradition of connecting art to wildlife,
just as John James Audubon himself
did,” said Sharon Richardson,
Executive Director of Audubon South
Carolina. “We’re thrilled to partner
with local Charleston retailers and
artisans to share our mission of bird
conservation with a broader audience,

riends of Coastal South
Carolina, an organization,
which has been supporting
conservation along the South
Carolina coast since 1996, will
host Lowcountry Evening for
Wildlife Thursday Mar. 7 at The
Citadel Beach Club, from 6 to
9 p.m.
The event will feature
internationally known author
Carl Safina who has published
seven books including; Voyage
of the Turtle, Song for the Blue
Ocean and Eye of the Albatross.
He hosted the 10-part PBS series
Saving the Ocean with Carl
Safina. Safina’s work has been
recognized with MacArthur,
Pew, and Guggenheim
Fellowships, and his writing
has won Orion, Lannan, and
National Academies literary
awards.
Special guests for the evening
include Sally Murphy whose
recently released book, Turning
the Tide chronicles the creation
of South Carolina’s sea turtle
program and the decades-
long battle for the use of turtle
excluder devices (TEDs) to
protect sea turtles.
“Sally Murphy is truly one of
the Lowcountry’s conservation
heroes. We are honored she
and Carl will be joining us
to support our conservation
efforts this year and share the
amazing stories of their work
and travels,” said Executive
Director Grace Gasper.
The event will raise funds
for Friends of Coastal South

Carolina’s conservation work
in support of Waccamaw, Cape
Romain and E.F. Hollings ACE
Basin National Wildlife Refuges
and the Francis Marion National
Forest. The group’s work
includes education programs,
which allow thousands of
children to explore our coastal
forest and wildlife refuges each
year.

amazing classrooms of our
forest and wildlife refuges
not only to teach science,
but to teach children about
their role as stewards of our
environment. We delight in
getting kids unplugged from
electronic devices and outside
exploring. This is critical work
because we must have that
engaged and knowledgeable
next generation continuing
protecting our irreplaceable
natural resources”, said

Acclaimed pianist performs for C of C Piano Series
ORION WEISS, YOUNG AMERICAN MUSICIAN

raised for his “powerful
technique and voluptuous
tone" (The Washington
Post) and playing that is “at once
sensitive and technically dazzling”
(Daily Camera), Orion Weiss is one
of the most sought-after soloists in
his generation of young American
musicians. Weiss has already
performed with the top American
Orchestras, including the Chicago
Symphony, Boston Symphony,
Los Angeles Philharmonic and
New York Philharmonic. Weiss will
perform the third concert in the
International Piano Series 29th
season at the College of Charleston
School of the Arts, with a dynamic
program of works by Maurice
Ravel, Dmitri Shostakovich and
Johannes Brahms.
Weiss began his 2018-2019
season with the Lucerne Festival
and will end with the Minnesota
Orchestra, with performances for
the Denver Friends of Chamber
Music, the University of Iowa, the
Chamber Music Society of Lincoln
Center, the Albany Symphony, the
Kennedy Center’s Fortas Series,
the 92nd Street Y, and the Broad
Stage in between.
In 2017-18 Weiss performed
Beethoven's Triple Concerto with
the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra,
toured with James Ehnes, and
soloed with 12 orchestras around

Named the Classical Recording
Foundation’s Young Artist of the
Year in September 2010, in the
summer of 2011 Weiss made his
debut with the Boston Symphony
Orchestra at Tanglewood as
a last-minute replacement for
Leon Fleisher. In recent seasons,
he has also performed with the
Los Angeles Philharmonic, San
Francisco Symphony, Philadelphia
Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony,
Toronto Symphony Orchestra,
National Arts Centre Orchestra,
and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra,
and in duo summer concerts with
the New York Philharmonic at both
Lincoln Center and the Bravo! Vail
Valley Festival. In 2005, he toured
Israel with the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra conducted by Itzhak
Perlman.
Also known for his affinity and
enthusiasm for chamber music,
Weiss performs regularly with
violinists Augustin Hadelich,
William Hagen, Benjamin
Beilman, James Ehnes, and

William Petschek Recital Award at
Juilliard, and made his New York
recital debut at Alice Tully Hall

his European debut in a recital
at the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
He was a member of the Chamber
Music Society Two program of the
Chamber Music Society of Lincoln
Center from 2002-2004, which
included his appearance in the
opening concert of the Society’s
2002-2003 season at Alice Tully
Hall performing Ravel’s "La Valse"
with Shai Wosner.
Weiss’s impressive list of
awards includes the Gilmore
Young Artist Award, an Avery
Fisher Career Grant, the Gina
Bachauer Scholarship at
the Juilliard School and the
Mieczyslaw Munz Scholarship. A
native of Lyndhurst, OH, Weiss
attended the Cleveland Institute
of Music, where he studied with
Paul Schenly, Daniel Shapiro,

Sergei Babayan, Kathryn Brown,
and Edith Reed. In February of
1999, Weiss made his Cleveland
Orchestra debut performing
Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1. In
March 1999, with less than 24
hours’ notice, Weiss stepped
in to replace André Watts for a
performance of Shostakovich’s
Piano Concerto No. 2 with the
Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
He was immediately invited to
return to the Orchestra for a
performance of the Tchaikovsky
Piano Concerto in October 1999.
In 2004, he graduated from the
Juilliard School, where he studied
with Emanuel Ax.
The concert will take place on
Tuesday, Mar. 12 at 7:30 p.m.,
in the Emmett Robinson Theatre,
