Objective 2: To determine how video and audio information is multiplexed in a modern digital television

signal.

Procedure:

1. Perform an Internet search on the terms HDTV, digital television, or high definition TV.
2. Locate documents that explain the operation, modulation and multiplexing of the U. S. HDTV
system. It is called the Advanced Television Standards Committee (ATSC) digital TV standard.
3. Answer the following questions.

Questions

1. How many individual signals are multiplexed in the ATSC HDTV system?
 There are two individual signals multiplexed in the ATSC HDTV system, the Audio signals and
Vido signals.
2. Does HDTV uses FDM or TDM?
 HDV use TDM. FDM is for analog only, while TDM is for both analog and digital.
3. What is the bandwidth of an HDTV channel?
 38.8 Mbps
4. What is the net data rate through the channel?
 19.4 Mbps
5. What kind d of modulation is used to transmit the HDTV signal?
 The modulation method recommended by the Grand Alliance for broadcast HDTV is 8
Vestigial Sideband (VSB). The technique could be considered to be a single-phase carrier,
amplitude modulated by the value of the digital data. The actual signal is implemented by
using signal shaping and a quadrature modulator to cancel the second sideband
