MATT SAYS:

The lick starts with a series of sweep/hybrid-picked arpeggios moving through

the progression… C#m9, G#7#5, F#m9 (against A major) and then a legato/hybrid
sequence through the D Lydian Dominant scale (D E F# G# A B C) over D9.
Against the C#m chord in bar 5 I play a chromatic legato line that outlines a C#7 chord.
As we saw before, superimposing a dominant line over the minor chord creates a V7-I
resolution into the next chord, in this case the F#7, where we land on the 3rd (A#). Then
I play a series of ascending m7b5 (add11) arpeggios a whole step apart (A# and B#)
finally resolving to the 3rd of A major (C#). The lick finishes with a bluesy diminished run
in E against the D7 chord before we move back to E major.
