Day 1: Integration of the first read of the Reader’s Writer’s Workshop text with Vocabulary
5 minutes
Provide the words on an anchor chart as shown on the below example (pre-write the words):

 Read each word with the class, clapping out the syllables. Often students recall definitions, but not the
actual word. Clapping out syllables assists with recall of words.
 Provide students with an independent vocabulary chart like the one below with words filled in:

 Have students turn to the new story in the Reader’s/Writer’s Workshop book
 Provide some background information

10 minutes:
 Have students independently read the story.
 Differentiation: Work with students anticipated to struggle in small group.

10 minutes:
 Once finished, have them return to the highlighted vocabulary words and predict the meaning from
context. (Before doing this as a routine, model predicting meaning from context.) Students write the
word and predictions on their vocabulary chart.
 Differentiation: Work with students anticipated to struggle in small group.

10 minutes:
 Students share predicted meanings in partners one word at a time. Teacher provides the actual
meaning and writes it on the anchor chart. Student can revise what they wrote if needed in the Actual
Meaning column on their chart. Teacher provides a synonym for each word (look these up prior).
Differentiation: If the word is easier, provide a harder synonym to challenge your students.
