UNIT TITLE Colorful Still Life Drawings
GRADE LEVEL 4th
DURATION 55 Minutes, 3 day

SAMPLE

Students in the 4th grade were working on slab building with clay and are learning a lot of the
RATIONALE main techniques and basics in different art forms. Students will learn the old-time techniques of
still life drawing and use elements of art such as value and shading and color mixing.
Still Life draw is something that has been done for decades because it shows the beauty in
simple everyday objects and forced the artist to draw from perspective and be creative in their
realistic portrayal. Students will start the class by playing around with the different still life
objects I provide and work on arrangements that interest them and start drawing them and
CENTRAL FOCUS playing with color. Next students will learn about a still life artist and point out in a verbal
discussion what they notice about her work. Next students will work with their table mates to
decide on a final set up of their still lives and begin drawing what they see. Next students will
experiment with color on their drawings and focus on showing light and shadow with color. Last
to finish it off they will create a table and a background for a better composition.

Lesson 1
Students will notice and describe different visual elements and techniques in still life artist work.
Lesson 2
OBJECTIVE(S) Students will demonstrate independence and persistence in arranging their own still life and
experimenting with colors.

Students will use feedback and learning goals to complete their project.
Vocabulary
Still Life: A painting or drawing of an arrangement of objects, such as fruit and flowers and
objects sometimes with bowls and glassware.
ACADEMIC
Value: the lightness darkness of hues.
LANGUAGE
Shading: apply media more densely or less densely to an area.
Cross hatching: fine parallel lines drawn closely together to create the illusion of shade or
texture in a drawing.
RESOURCES
Pencils (24), Erasers (24), bucket of color pencils, 9 by 6 White Construction Paper, 9 by 12

EQUIPMENT
Students will use a rubric as they complete the project and will be reminded of aspects to focus
