American Sign Language 102
Curriculum: Signing Naturally Units 7-12
Lesson: Unit 8, Lesson 2, 6 and 8
Class day/time: Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:45 PM-8:50 PM
Class Duration: 2 hours 5 minutes (125 Minutes)

Course Description:
This is a continued introductory course in American Sign Language that builds the linguistic
and cultural knowledge of ASL and Deaf Culture. You will study more advanced vocabulary,
ASL sentence structures, and social conventions involved in ASL. You will demonstrate
intermediate elements of the language and explore its use as a multi-cultural tool to aid in the
understanding of Deaf Culture. You will have a good idea of what the “Deaf experience”
encompasses and will be able to carry on casual conversations in the language. This class is
taught in ASL (Please refrain from using your voice in class in order to be fully immersed in
ASL).

Course Learning Outcome:

According to Mt. SAC’s Sign Language/Interpreting Department,


At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Describing Locations. By the end of SIGN 102, American Sign Language 2, 70% of
students will be able to successfully comprehend a signed presentation that locates
objects in a room.

2. Language and Culture, Humanities Area C GEO (Copy). Students completing an


assignment in Humanities Area C will be able to identify the influence of culture on
human expression.

3. Successfully incorporate topicalization and correct spatial referencing when comparing


and contrasting between two different people.

4. Students will properly mark the topic in ASL sentences using non-manual markers.
ACTFL Standards
1. Comprehension: Students will be able to interact with American Sign Language users
and respond to conversations and questions in American Sign Language as a whole at
intermediate level (Aligned with course outcomes: 1 and 2), (Aligned with ACTFL: 1.1, 2.1,
4.1, and 5.2)

2. Production: Students will be able to demonstrate the structure of American Sign Language
to form signs and produce facial grammar properly as a whole at intermediate level
(Aligned with course outcomes: 1, and 3), (Aligned with ACTFL: 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, and 3.1)

3. Cultural Diversity: Students will be able to define Deaf culture in addition to their own
cultures to develop an appreciation for others and an ability to interact within
multicultural communities and the world at large (Aligned with course outcomes: 1, 2

Teaching Methods:
Direct Method
Students directly learn the language while simultaneously gaining respect for diversity.
Students will be directed to attend events which include interacting in the ASL Community.
Sociocultural
Students learn the sociocultural aspects of multicultural communities including cultural,
gender identity and identity issues. Peer interactions will include various opportunities to
share and discuss cultural viewpoints.
Interactional
Students work in pairs or groups in order to expand their conversations regarding phone
numbers, months and the signs they want to know. Students discuss, analyze and compare
personal information.
Learner-Centered
Students assertively learn language and culture through their own inner passion and
motivation, guided by the teacher in order to educate others effectively.

Cultural:

Students practice with their productive skills by using constrastive structure, facial grammar
and eye gaze.

Ways of Communicating with others-using spatial, eye gaze, ask questions and create
dialogue:
1. Point: if the object is within sight
2. Draw: if pen and paper are available
3. List items in a category that may be similar. You can also describe the word.
4. Use opposites
5. Describe/Act out: gesture the word
and try to avoid fingerspelling.

LESSON PROCEDURE
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION LENGTH
Roll Call Instructor asks students to line up in 10 minutes
alphabetical order according to their first
name. Instructor will ask each student to
fingerspell their first and last name.
Opening Instructor will sign the agenda while 5 minutes
following the PowerPoint of the agenda
Review Instructor will review the cardinal 5 minutes
numbers from ASL 1 following the Power
Points.
Teacher Direct Instructor will introduce identifications: 5 minutes
phone number, student’s ID number,
home address.
Guide Practice Students will view a video of a person 10 minutes
demonstrating various phone numbers.
While focusing on the PowerPoint slide,
with the various phone numbers, students
will watch instructor and copy the sign for
the numbers.
Independent Practice Students will be instructed to form groups 15 minutes
of at least 4 to exchange phone numbers.
Teacher Direct Instructor will introduce ways of 5 minutes
communication with others (strategies)
Guide Practice Instructor will demonstrate to students 15 minutes
strategies to use for unknown signs other
than using fingerspelling. Students will
copy as instructor gives strategies
Independent Practice With the partner students will use the 15 minutes
different strategies to sign various
vocabulary words from the handout.

accuracy.
Teacher Direct Instructor will demonstrate how to form 20 minutes
