Refugee Mini-Project Assignment

Objective: With a partner or a group of 3, choose one migrant group from the accompanying list (or suggest
your own), research the group, become an expert, and prepare an outline for a paper on that topic.

The Research Portion


After preliminary research with your group, each of you will record your answers to the guiding questions
below in a separate word documents; this will be turned in. (English 1: Preliminary Research Worksheet). It
should reflect your own voice. Use the document and your research to create your outline, including a solution
proposal. Use all available resources, including textbooks, the library, and online resources to research your
chosen group.

Guiding Questions
a) Compare and contrast immigrant with refugee.
b) Why are refugees forced to flee their homelands? What are the political, economic, social, and/or
geological causes?
c) What is life like as a ____ refugee? (Consider refugee camps, escape, legal battles, etc.)
d) What are the consequences and effects of these migrations?
e) Are there any solutions (that have been suggested, or tried, or failed, or are the outlined next steps by
involved organizations)? What could be several viable options for next steps?

Requirements - Make note of the following key aspects in your outline:


• Years, description, and details of the event • Causes and context (consider PERSIA)
• Individuals, groups, and places involved • Effects, consequences, and solutions

The Proposal
• In your outline, you must identify, explain, and evaluate any viable solutions that have been tried or are
being tried (and which organizations are working to solve the issues surrounding your refugee crises).
• You and your partner need to create a proposal that includes the best possible solutions from as many
perspectives as is feasible to solve your current crises and/or prevent further crises.
• You must give credit to the creators of all solutions you identify, evaluate, and especially consider as a
part of your own proposal or plan.
• The audience of the proposal should be to the overseeing organization in charge of dealing with your
migrant group (UN, EU, UNHRC, etc.)
