Cultural flagships, from trendy breeding grounds to iconic cultural palaces, form the core of many
urban cultural landscapes. 'Spaces of Culture' is about the new construction and redevelopment
of cultural buildings in Amsterdam in the period 2000-2016. In the construction and development
of new cultural spaces in the city, the precise location and architecture play a major role in
connecting the venue to the changing needs of the public, the makers, and the neighbourhood.
Using various case studies, this publication shows that the cultural sector could benefit from
knowledge exchange between urban planners, developers, and the world of architecture.

Founded in 2007 by Stephanie Bru and Alexandre Theriot, Bruther works in the fields of
architecture, research, education, urbanism, and landscape. Its projects suggest a delicate
balance between strategy and form, rigour and freedom, specific and generic, immediacy and
evolutivity. The office is known for designs that represent open infrastructures matching an
abundance of contextual possibilities and with a wide malleability of uses. This monographic
instalment presents a selection of Bruther's work from 2012 to the present, featuring no less than
20 projects across a range of typologies, from the Helsinki Central Library to sports centres,
residential solutions, and more.

This publication is centred around twelve manifesto points towards a people-centred urbanism
and an architecture of belonging in times of rapid global urbanisation. Based on the authors'
eleven year research experience, the book draws conclusions from Addis Ababa, the capital of
Ethiopia, as its case study. It contains essays on the historic development and the current
housing situation of the city by local experts and numerous project examples. Addressing policy
makers, architects and urban planners alike, the manifesto gives a series of clues and guidelines
for a sustainable urbanisation of contemporary African metropolis.

Beyong aggressive urbanization and the culture of global capitalism, a generation of young
architects is trying to rethink the typological constants and symbolic imagery of Chinese
architecture on a contemporary note. This results in buildings which stand out for their hybrid
language and their quality, and seven cases are featured in this issue: The Contemporary Art
Museum in Taizhou by Atelier Deshaus, the astronomical park in Suzhou by Specific and Unit
Architects, the cultural center in Chetian by West-line Studio, the memorial in Zhejiang by DnA,
the public pergola in Shangcun by SUP Atelier, a bamboo craft village in Chongzou by Archi-
Union Architects, and more.
