Final Portfolio

Eng 102- Fall 2010

Instructor: Laura Darrow

Your final portfolio should include three things:

Choose two of the following essays:

Essay #1: Poetry Essay
Essay #2: Play/Short Story Analysis
Essay #3: Huze/O’Brien Context Essay
Essay #4: Atwood Essay

You also need a cover letter, which should be in block, business format
and a FULL single spaced page in length.

Here are the minimum requirements for the final portfolio:

-At least one essay of 4 FULL pages and onto the fifth
-MLA documentation of at least three outside sources including both
primary and secondary materials. This should be true of everyone for
Essay #4, but could also be true of essay #3.

All of these should be thoroughly revised and edited, and should

represent your very best work from the semester. You should address
all of my comments in your revisions and consider taking your essay to
the Learning Center, or submitting to the online tutor for further
suggestions as well. You need to be particularly aware of your MLA
citation in these essays. If your sources in either essay are not
properly cited, your portfolio will not be graded.

For your cover letter (same as before):

1. Use block business letter format (many examples are available
online). Remember your salutation and closing.
2. Single-space, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, approx. 1 page in
length
3. Focus you letter on the ways your writing has changed throughout
the class. Has your writing process changed? Are there things you used
to do, that you don’t anymore? Has your writing improved? How? What
are your goals, and how prepared do you feel for ENG 102?
Consider discussing how you have met the learning outcomes for the
course.
4. Also use the letter to introduce the writing in your portfolio. What
did you learn from each of these assignments? You can write about
each in a short paragraph, in which you cite the title of each essay.
5. Remember that this is your way of introducing yourself to the
graders and setting your portfolio apart from the rest. Try to use this
letter as a place to show the committee your voice as a writer. Use
humor and stories and description and all the other skills you have
gained so far this semester. This, like the rest of the portfolio, should
represent your best writing.

The final portfolio is due through the link on Blackboard on

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 1ST. This is unusual since we don’t usually
have assignments due on Wednesdays. However, it is essential that
you turn in your portfolio on time. Please delete your name from all
documents and replace it with your student number. Staple all your
papers together with the cover letter on top.

Good luck!
