tion

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This Blubbl.US site is great for students who have difficul-
ty presenting ideas or demonstrating comprehensive knowledge. This tool allows students to
simply build on what they know from key words and ideas. Moreover, this tool allows parents
and guardians to engage in class topics and ideas from viewing these clear and simple organizers
on the class website. This activity can easily be demonstrated for students of all levels and abili-
ties and relates to the standard shown above.

Engagement: This lesson engages students with its unique style and creative aspect, for it uses
words and definitions without going too in-depth. This lesson engages learning with student-di-
rected learning tasks, exploring student roles, collaborating and social interaction, along with
performance based assessment.

Representation: This tool presents information to students in a clear, understandable way. The
information is drawn out clearly since the words and thoughts build upon each other in simple
form for the Kindergartners to comprehend and use.

Action and Expression: Students express their content knowledge with their abilities to create a
product that can be shared with peers and used for additional products. Furthermore, the stu-
dents will review this standard topic with the teacher, and then they will be asked to create
their own as a group. This group collaboration will lessen the pressure of demonstrating this new
concept for the first time on their own, build collaboration and team skills, and the students will
feel their ideas are heard and important from their team members.

Lesson idea implementation:
This visual tool will be used to introduce a lesson on the states of matter. The teacher will
lead a discussion on the states of matter and build upon each state with definitions and exam-
ples. Likewise, after reviewing the mind map on States of Matter, the students will be divided
into four groups of four or five students and asked to create their own mind map of different ex-
amples of the three states of matter. They should have at least 3 examples of each state of mat-
ter. They will be using the available class computers and iPads that the teacher already has
logged onto Bubble.US. The teacher exemplifies how to use this tool with the LCD project and
screen, and the example product will be left up as a demonstration for the students to use on
how to construct their own. This should take approximately 30 minutes to an hour for the stu-
dents to create.
Furthermore, each group will be turning these into the teacher for he or she to analyze
their understanding of the three types of matter, which will be represented with a smiley face or
frown face, depending on their ideas and understanding of this topic. If they receive a frown
face, the teacher reviews this topic and the instructions to the students so that they can fix their
mind map and show their understanding of this topic.
Also, these mind mappings will be uploaded to the class website for all parents and
guardians to view. They will be uploaded with the group names on them so that the differentia-
tion in student work will be shown.
Additionally, the students will be asked to bring in one object that represents one of the
three states of matter. They will have over the weekend to come up with this object and bring it
in. The different states of matter are everything we see and touch, so the students can bring in
the object of their choice and explain why this object is a solid, liquid, or a gas. Parent involve-
ment will be encouraged with the Bubble.US webpage link being easily accessible via the class
website, along with the teacher mind map on the states of matter that was used to introduce
this topic. This can be used for definitions and examples of what the three states of matter are
and how they are seen.
Reflective Practice:
An appropriate extension of this object would be to display student mind maps on the parent
teacher involvement webpage in collaboration with the other Kindergarten classes. The different
ideas from all of the Kindergarten students will be shown and they will be able to build and learn
from each other’s thought and ideas. The students should have full understanding on the states
of matter and how we see and use this every single day. To further the technological use, stu-
dents can practice with the Buble.US site at home for practicing their brain storming ideas. This
will take this from a LOTi 4 to a LOTi 5 because this tool will be used outside of the four walls of
the classroom.
