m. API 582, “Welding guidelines for the Chemical, Refining and Gas Industries.”

n. National, state, and local regulations and laws.

2. FABRICATION

2.1 General

Fabrication shall be in accordance with ASME B31.3.

2.2 Bending

Hot bending is not permitted in the field.

2.3 Welding

a. Welding shall be performed in accordance with ASME B31.3 and API RP582.

b. Welds shall be made by a metal arc process involving the deposition of filler metal.

c. Single side full penetration welds shall be made without backing strips. The root pass shall
be made by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW).

d. When access to both sides is available, full penetration, double welded joints, shall be
used. The initial root pass including root tack welds, shall be chipped, ground and / or
gouged to sound metal on the reverse side before welding on that side. The back chipped
welds, groove and plate edges, shall be magnetic particle or liquid dye penetrant examined
to ensure that all cracks, pinholes, laminations, porosity, and other defects have been
removed prior to welding on the reverse side.

e. Carbon, low & intermediate chrome, and nickel steel welding consumables shall be of the
low hydrogen type. They shall be stored in accordance with the manufacturer’s
requirements (e.g., remain in sealed packaging prior to use, storage in warming ovens until
use, etc). All materials shall be stored and used in a manner that prevents exposure to
moisture and inclusion of hydrogen in the deposited welds. The surfaces to be welded
shall be clean, dry and free of contaminants. The weld procedure shall minimize
hardenability and ensure that the welds meet all required properties, including toughness
and ductility.

f. Austenitic stainless steel and nickel alloy welding consumables shall be stored in
accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements (e.g., remain in sealed packaging prior to
use, storage in warming ovens until use, etc). The surfaces to be welded shall be clean,
dry and free of contaminants. The weld procedure shall ensure that the welds meet all
required properties, including toughness and ductility.

g. Covered welding electrodes shall be in accordance with Tables 1A and 1B, Covered
Electrodes.

h. Bare electrodes (for inert gas and submerged arc welding) shall be in accordance with
Tables 2A and 2B, Bare Electrodes.

2.4 Heat Treatment

a. Weld joints in carbon steels that require post weld heat treatment and all low alloy steels
shall be heat treated immediately upon completion of welding. The joint shall not be
allowed to cool below 300ºF (150ºC) prior to heat treatment. If this is not practical, the
weld and adjacent metal shall be uniformly heated to 600ºF (315ºC), wrapped with
insulation, and allowed to cool. Heat treatment may then be performed later.

b. As an alternative to 2.4a., welded joints in carbon steel less than 1½ inches (38mm) thick
that require post weld heat treatment may be permitted to cool prior to post weld heat
treatment (PWHT) if the joint is 100 percent radiographed after completion of PWHT. If
100 percent radiography cannot be performed, the provisions of paragraph 2.4a. are
required. This alternative does not apply to joints in low alloy steels.

c. Postweld heat treatment or thermal stabilization heat treatment of any austenitic material
other than Alloy 800/800H/800HT shall only be permitted with the prior written
permission of UOP.

d. Where heat treatment of Alloy 400, Alloy 600, or Alloy 800 piping is required, it shall be
performed in an atmosphere essentially sulfur-free.

e. Alloy 800, 800H, and 800HT shall be postweld heat treated at 1650˚F ± 25˚F (900˚C ±
15˚C) for 1 ½ hours, for thicknesses up to 1 inch (25mm), and for 1 ½ hours plus 1
hour/inch (25mm) of thickness in excess of 1 inch (25mm).

f. When postweld heat treatment of Alloy 400 is specified, heat treatment shall be at a
temperature of 1150-1250˚F (620-675˚C) with a holding time of 1 hour per inch (25mm)
of thickness and minimum holding time of 1 hour. Follow with cooling in still air.

Notes:

1. Electrode coatings designated XX may be 15, 16, or 18.

2. Specified electrodes assume a material is welded to the same material; e.g., carbon steel to
carbon steel, 1 ¼ Cr – ½ Mo to 1 ¼ Cr – ½ Mo, 304 to 304, etc.

3. For austenitic stainless steel electrodes, minimum carbon content shall be 0.04% when the
design temperature is greater than 1000˚F (538˚C).

4. The ferrite content of austenitic stainless steel weld deposits shall be controlled to a WRC
(Welding Research Council) Ferrite Number (FN) of 3 (5 for Type 347) minimum to 8
maximum. FN control shall be by reference to the DeLong Constitution diagram for stainless
steel weld metals. The limit defined above shall be confirmed by thoroughly checking the
final deposits (prior to postweld heat treatment, if performed) with a magnetic instrument
calibrated in accordance with the standard procedure defined in AWS A4.2. Reading shall be
taken from at least two locations from each circumferential weld.

5. When the metal operating temperature exceeds Tcr, as defined in ASME B31.3 Table 302.3.5,
the Weld Joint Strength Reduction Factor (WSRF) listed in Table 302.3.5 may require a
significant increase in pipe wall thickness for welded pipe. The WSRF for austenitic stainless
steel may exceed the values listed in Table 302.3.5 if the greater value is substantiated by
creep rupture testing in accordance with 302.3.5(f)(1).
