CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. The Background of the study

In the modern era English is very important for us, beside can help to require

and increase our knowledge, English can change our life. Not only for future, and

economic but also for education. Students as future generation should be able to use

English to compete with other students after graduation. Therefore, English is also

important for students in improving their knowledge.

Many things can make the students are enjoy in learning English that is by

using a media or types of the text. The latest curriculum expects the students to learn the

types of the text, such as narratives, descriptive, expository, etc. the media are for

example storybooks, course books, picture cards, tapes, games, songs, etc

(David,2003:49-75).

Translation is the key of English. Students can improve their

translation by English translating from word to word or phrase, there’s media can

improve students’ translation such as using anime cartoon. Translation is a phenomenon

that has a huge effect on everyday life. Catford defines translation as "the replacement of

textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language

(TL) "(1965).
Based on the statement above, teaching and learning translation is

very important and useful for our life every day. In other words when students translate a

text or subtitle in the video, the students will motivate to understand and translate it well.

Anime cartoon as a media can motivate the students to improve their

translation by watching the video or reading the anime comics. The teacher can explore

the stimulates’ motivation of the students in translating the anime cartoon from English

to Indonesia or Indonesia to English. Anime cartoon k-on is a japanese four-panel comic

strip seinen manga written and illustrated by kakifly. The manga was serialized in

Houbunsha’s seinen manga magazine Time Kirara between the may 2007 and october

2010 issues.

1.2. The Reason for Choosing the Topic

Translation is the key of English. The students who mastered more

English translation will be easier to learning translation by fun media. The paper is

concerned with teaching translation by using anime cartoon as a media to improve

students’ ability in translation.

The writer choose the topic because wants to motivate and

improve the students’ ability in translation. Because learning translation is fun and

interesting by using anime cartoon k-on as media to improve students’ ability in

translation.
1.3. The Problem Statement

Based on the explanation above, the problem that is going to be discussed

in this study is “can the using of anime cartoon k-on can improve significally the

students’ ability in translating?”

1.4. The objectives of the Study

Based on the problem statement, the purpose of the research is to determine

what the teaching translation by using anime cartoon as media can improve students’

ability in translation is.

1.5. The significant of the study

The significant studies of the research are:

1. The writer can add knowledge and experience in improve students’ ability in

translation by using anime cartoon k-on.

2. The teachers are expected to get effective and efficient method in improve

students’ ability in translation

3. The students are expected can improve translation’ ability through anime

cartoon k-on as media in teaching translation

1.6. The Scope and Limitation

To get the effectiveness of the research, the writer limits the research

as follows:

1. The research is only focused on eleven grade students of SMAN 14 Garut;

2. The research is only focused on improving students’ translation ability;

3. The research is only focused on translation practice.

1.7. The Assumption

The assumption of this study is translation practice can improve students’

ability in translating the anime cartoon k-on.

1.8. Hypothesis of the Study

According to Kendra Cherry, hypothesis is a tentative statement about the

relationship between two or more variables. A hypothesis is a specific, testable

prediction about what you expect to happen in your study. The writer provides the

hypothesis as follows:

a. Ho: There is no significant improve of using anime cartoon k-on to improve

students’ translation.

b. Ha: There is significant improve of using anime cartoon k-on to improve

student’s translation.

1.9. The Research Design

The writer designs this paper as follows:

1. Method

The writer uses quantitative research to find out the significant

influence of using anime cartoon k-on toward student’s translation in statistical

form. According to Aliaga and Gunderson (2000), Quantitative research is

‘Explaining phenomena by collecting numerical

Data that are analyzed using mathematically based methods

(in particular statistics)’. In this case, the writer will apply the theory of

expanding students’ translation through anime cartoon k-on. Creswell also

stated that there are two kinds of quantitative research, experiments and

surveys.
The quantitative method that the writer uses is pre-experimental

research with applying pre-test, treatment, post-test design and control group.

Some treatments will be given after the pre-test to determine the influence of

improving students’ translation through anime cartoon k-on. The writer will

observes one group of students of XI MIA 4 class in SMAN 14 Garut.

2. Subject

The subject of the research is 40 (forty) students of SMAN 14

Garut at the first semester of 2014/2015 academic year.

3. Population and Sample

The population of this research is the fourteen (14th) students of

SMAN 14 Garut. The writer will take XI MIA 4 class that consists of forty

(40) students as the sample of the research.

1.10. The Definition of Term

In order to avoid misunderstanding about the research it is

important to define the term of: Translation, Anime as follows:

1. Translation is a process rendering meaning, ideas, or messages to

understand a text or vocabulary in English from one language to other

language from word to word or phrase. According to James S. Holmes,

1972, a new discipline concerned with “the complex of problems clustered

round the phenomenon of translating and translations.”

2. Many modern societies create texts of visual and narrative art that consist

of a series of illustrations with dialogue. Manga is a cultural product which

provides both aesthetic and expressive content. This is a form of

communication that produces aesthetic enjoyment and conveys

information (Wong, 2006).

3. According to Cintas (2007, p. 8), who are both a practitioner and a

researcher of audiovisual translation, subtitling can be defined as: a

translation practice that consists of presenting a written text, generally on

the lower part of the screen, that endeavors to recount the original

dialogue of the speakers, as well as the discursive elements that appear in

the image (letters, inserts, graffiti, inscriptions, placards and the like), and

the information that is contained on the soundtrack (songs, voices). The

writer find that anime cartoon as media can motivate the students to

improve their translation.

1.11. Organization of The Research

The organization of the research is arranged as follows:

Chapter I: Introduction discusses the background of the research

and then followed with the statement of research problem, purpose of the

study, research question, significant of the study and the organization of

research.

Chapter II: Literature Review introduces the definition of

Translation; follow with explanation of type’s translation, definition of

anime, technical features of anime within animation, translation technique,

word by word translation, literacy translation, translation process, form and

meaning translation, translation strategies, idiom of translation, and teaching

translation by using anime cartoon as media to improve students’ ability in

translation
Chapter III: Research Methodology discusses the research

design, followed with the research design, population and sample, research

instrument, technique and data collection, technique data analysis, research

participant and research procedure.
