DISTRICT ATTORNEYS ASSOCIATION OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK

ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF ANIMAL CRIMES SUBCOMMITTEE

The District Attorneys Association of the State of New York announced the formation of
an Animal Crimes Subcommittee to bring together prosecutors from around the state who
are dedicated to working on animal crimes and animal cruelty issues to help improve the
investigation and prosecution of these cases.

“For years many of our District Attorneys and Assistant District Attorneys who work on
animal crimes have been emailing and having conversations about issues they encounter.
We wanted to create a formal DAASNY committee to help these prosecutors have these
conversations and be able to connect the expertise we have in offices all over the state,”
said DAASNY President Albany County District Attorney David Soares. “The District
Attorney’s Office is tasked with prosecuting offenders who violate the law, and in cases
of animal abuse or hoarding, it is vital to hold offenders accountable while also ensuring
these crimes are never repeated. Our goal is to make sure that we are employing best
practices all over the state and prioritizing prevention strategies in every community and
educating the public about what they can do to help.”

The announcement was made at a workshop co-sponsored by DAASNY and the New
York State Animal Protection Federation entitled Creating New Perspectives on Animal
Cruelty held at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The day featured three different
sessions for Shelter Professionals, Law Enforcement, District Attorneys, Animal Control
Officers and Dog Control Officers.

“It is imperative that district attorneys across the state take animal crimes seriously. Many
times they are the gateway to more offensive crimes. We’ve worked closely with the
District Attorneys Association of the State of New York over the past few years,” said
Libby Post, Executive Director of the NYS Animal Protection Federation. “Establishing
the legislative sub-committee on animal crimes is testament to the leadership of DA
Soares and DAASNY’s commitment to animal crimes.”

The co-chairs of the committee will be Jed Painter, Counsel to Nassau County District
Attorney and Jennifer McCanney, Assistant Albany County District Attorney for Special
Victims. The group will meet on a regular basis, discuss animal crimes issues and
prosecutions, as well as review and comment on pending legislation related to animal
crimes. Also part of the committee will be Caroline Wojtaszek, Niagara County District
Attorney; Kelli McCoski, Montgomery County District Attorney; Jane Grinberg, ADA
Richmond County, Niki Caferri, ADA Queens County, Karen Turner, ADA Kings
County; Anthony Johnson, ADA Kings County; Mary Ann Liebowitz, ADA Westchester
County; Josh Loigman, ADA Bronx County, Erin Hart, ADA Erie County; Stephanie
Singe; ADA Oneida County; Bianca Stella D’Angelo, ADA Monroe County; Christiana
McSloy, ADA Suffolk County. Additional District Attorneys and Assistant District
Attorneys are welcome to participate and join the committee.

DAASNY was formed in 1909 as an organization for prosecutors in the State of New
York to provide for the exchange of information and views with respect to the conduct of
their offices, the New York State criminal justice system and the criminal law and
operation. DAASNY encourages and fosters communication, cooperation, training and
consultation among and on behalf of the district attorneys and their staffs for matters
concerning the prosecution of crime in New York State.
