The first thanks for helping bring this book to fruition goes to a long line of Andean medicine women and

men who for more than five thousand years passed knowledge of despachos from one generation to the next via oral

tradition. Many thanks also go to Jose Luis Hererra and Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., who thirty-something years ago

ventured into the high Andes mountains to study with the medicine people there and learned to make despachos.

The recipes for a number of these they brought back. Dr. Villoldo incorporated some of these into the curriculum of

his teaching organization, The Four Winds Society. During my studies with Dr. Villoldo, knowledge of the ayni and

cuti despachos was passed to me. I also learned from Dr. Villoldo that a basic ayni despacho could be modified into

more specialized despachos, such as the despachos to heal the feminine and the masculine. This led to my

development of the remainder of the despachos that appear in this book with two exceptions. Another teacher of

mine, Linda Fitch, the Dean of Students at The Four Winds Society, passed on to me Dr. Villoldo’s aya despacho

recipe and I thank her immensely for this since it was the guidance she gave me for working with this despacho that

ultimately inspired the creation of this book. My friend and medicine sister Carol Lachata helped me develop the

house cleaning despacho, then contributed her talents as a designer and photographer to produce the amazing

photographs that follow. In Peru I had the privilege of participating in despacho ceremonies led by the living

Andean medicine masters don Francisco, don Pascuale, don Umberto, dona Bernadina and others and thank each

and every one of them for these invaluable learning opportunities. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of

you, including all our Andean sisters and brothers we never knew, for your contributions in bringing this ancient

healing art forward so knowledge of it can now be passed on to many, many others.

This book is dedicated with much love and gratitude to my sons Zane and Jonah. Thank you for

being two of the best teachers I will ever have.

Introduction

Maybe you already know that the more you smile, the more others smile at you. But

did you know this happens with the gods too?

One way to smile at them is with a despacho.

What is a despacho? It is a feast for the gods, a banquet, complete with flowers and red

and white wine. As you’ll see from the photos in this book, a finished despacho is a beautiful

work of art as well as an offering that’s alive with energy and filled with many smiles and much

love.

If you lived in or near the Andes Mountains, you might already be familiar with

despachos. You might know their reputation for creating vortexes of spiritual energy that help

bring healing, blessings and even manifest prayers.

Now you can experience such miracles for yourself when you use the directions that

follow for making your own despachos. You will discover that a despacho causes the gods to

smile at you in ways that bring you into better balance with yourself and others.

Attract Abundance and New Possibilities

The more balanced you are, the more good things simply flow to you, providing you with

increasing levels of abundance on all levels -- physical, emotional, energetic, spiritual. You

might even experience a miracle, perhaps as blessings, perhaps as healing, perhaps as a beautiful

dream suddenly fulfilled.

7
Despachos also help attract exciting new possibilities to you, perhaps much better than

you could have imagined for yourself. When you burn a despacho (the destiny of most), this can

happen quite quickly. So quickly that it’s important to suspend disbelief and be open and

receptive to this process, even when it means letting go of the “old” to make way for the “new.”

Using your intuition may help guide you -- perhaps with feelings, perhaps with the

language of dream imagery, perhaps with suggestions from others, perhaps with signs or

experiences related to the themes of “old versus new.” Sometimes you’ll use two or more

despachos together, such as making an aya despacho to bring closure followed by an ayni

despacho to bring blessings. This is a common and powerful “out with the old and in with the

new” despacho strategy.

Ultimately, a despacho helps pave the way for you to come into greater alignment, or

right relationship, with the world around you. Exactly what that entails, the universe will reveal

to you as you go. When putting your prayers (or wishes) into a despacho, let them reflect the fact

that the gods know best. Instead of requesting a romance with John down the street, for

example, request a romance with someone you like as well as John or better. Then be ready

when what you asked for shows up.

One woman I know made a despacho with prayers for a new employee for her business.

Within 48 hours of burning her despacho, three outstanding candidates appeared on her path.

Such experiences with despachos are the norm, not the exception.

A despacho needn’t always be a solo endeavor. Make it a group event if you like. All

who put their prayers into the despacho will be served.

8
In some cases, you will want to make the same despacho more than once. An Ayni

Despacho, which brings general healing and blessings, is best made regularly, once a month

ideally.

Where Despachos Originated

According to legend, despachos originated in the Andes Mountains over five thousand

years ago. They became such an important and vital part of the lives of the local indigenous

people that one generation of medicine women and men after another meticulously passed on

their knowledge of despachos orally because there was no written language.

Like all indigenous healing, the know-how for making the first despacho came from

divine inspiration, not trial and error. It was made of locally available items including grains and

legumes, wild flowers, wool fluff and other valued items. In the absence of paper, which

provides the foundation for despachos today, early despachos were made on animal skins, large

leaves and coarsely woven fabric. Some were made in shells including turtle shells.

As the art of despacho-making evolved over several millennium, different types of

despachos were developed. Today, hundreds of different kinds are made, each one suited to a

specific purpose. Some of them – the Ayni, Cuti, Aya and Chaska Despachos – are extremely

ancient.

Each despacho has a specific purpose. And all despachos are powerful. Perhaps the most

powerful in the collection that follows are the Aya Despacho and the despachos to heal the

feminine and the masculine. If you make at least one despacho every 28 days or so, at the end of

a year, you’ll look back and see that you received much healing and many blessings in return for

these sacred offerings.

9
How to Make A Despacho

This book includes directions for making 13 despachos. The main feature of a despacho,

the qintu or leaf set, is made of three leaves. Use dried bay leaves or similar sized leaves from

your garden. Your prayers (or wishes) are blown into the leaves which are then placed into the

despacho.

To get started, you likely already have or can easily get what you need without extra

effort. In your kitchen you might find items such as dried fruits and grains and legumes and

candy. You can find in nature such items as leaves, flowers and feathers. Even if you’ve never

found a feather before, when you set your intention to make a despacho, chances are a feather

will appear on your path between now and then. Or maybe you already found one recently.

If you feel inclined to shop for despacho items, a good place to start is a specialty candy

store, or the candy aisle at a supermarket. You’ll find a good assortment of candies there,

especially gummy critters: gummy fish, gummy frogs, gummy dogs, and so on -- the more, the

merrier. Remember to get plenty of chocolates, too, including chocolate kisses.

Despachos often include miniature items as well and these can be harder to find. Local

and on-line merchants that sell imports from Central and South America are most likely to stock

these. However, you might enjoy making these miniatures yourself. For example, a tiny broom

(for the house cleaning despacho) can be fashioned with a small stick, a bit of dry grass and

some thread. A pair of male and female figures can be made decorating a popsicle stick with

fabric scraps for clothes and colored markers to draw the faces, or by cutting pictures of a man

10
and a woman from magazines. You could draw your own figures on paper and cut them out. In

fact, anything you’re missing can be drawn and included in the despacho as a rendering.

You can also substitute items as needed. Try to find substitutes with somewhat similar

qualities. For example, red wine is most often substituted with concord grape juice or another

reddish-colored juice and white wine is commonly substituted with vodka or white grape juice.

Be sure to include items that have special meaning to you and also ones you don’t mind

parting with because you’ll be burning or burying your despachos.

As you get ready to make them, don’t be intimidated by long lists of despacho

ingredients. You can omit quite a few items and still have your despacho work, although it’s a

good practice to offer substitutes.

Made with Your Intention and Love

The most important ingredient of all for making a successful despacho is intent. Having

fun while making your despacho helps too. Making a despacho is akin to playing in a garden and

best approached this way.

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, allow 60 to 90 minutes to assemble and burn or

bury your despacho. You may need a little longer the first time you do this. According to legend,

as a despacho burns, the spirit of the great condor descends and consumes any heavy and

disordered energy present, then brings your prayers up to the heavens.

Start by lighting a candle if you like, then say a few words to invite divine assistance.

Perhaps read or recite a prayer. The words aren’t nearly as important as your intent to extend a

sincere invitation to healing spirits from the invisible world to support you. Make any special

11
requests you like such as calling on Jesus, angels, saints, and healers (living and passed). Which

gods you invite to your despacho is up to you.

They’re awaiting your smile.

12
Ayni (Abundance) Despacho

Ayni, in the Andean dialect of Quechua, means reciprocity. Ayni, in English, means what

goes round comes round. An Ayni Despacho is about this sacred give-and-take that governs our

lives. It gives thanks by giving back.

In this way, balance or right relationship is the main focus of this despacho. Interestingly,

when you give thanks with an Ayni Despacho, you receive much more than you give. Be on the

lookout for welcome coincidences after you make it. These coincidences are indicators that

13
you’re coming into greater alignment with the flow of life. This synchronicity is a hallmark of

well-being. To keep humming in this beautiful groove, make an Ayni Despacho monthly.

Piece of paper measuring approximately 30” x 30”. White is traditional, wrapping paper works
well too. Make the despacho in the center of the paper, leaving enough room on all four sides to
fold it up as a gift when finished.

Sugar, for sweetness and love, perhaps in the form of a Southern Cross, a guiding principle of
the southern hemisphere.

Incense, 2 sticks, criss-crossed, invites the presence of the divine, place on top of the sugar to
represent the assemblage of reality, the intersecting of time and space for the manifestation of
life to occur.

Anise seeds, sprinkle over the incense to feed the elemental spirits of earth, fire, water and air.

Lavender and/or rosemary and/or sage for cleansing and the power of directed action.

Rice for fertility and abundance.

Red wine. Call on the earth to bless this first layer, then sprinkle some red wine onto the
despacho.

White wine. Call on the mountains to bless this first layer, then sprinkle some white wine onto
the despacho.

36 or more leaves, (dried cocoa leaves, dried bay leaves or any similar sized flat leaves.)

Make the leaves into qintus (leaf sets) by assembling three leaves together, face up, stem side
down, with the largest leaf in the back and the smallest in the front.

Blow your prayers into the qintus. Your prayers can be for anything including healing,
assistance, guidance, favors, etc. Remember to make your prayers general and without
attachment to outcome, such as requesting a wonderful new home, but not a specific one; or a
great new job, but not a specific one; or a new friend, but not a specific one. Make at least a
dozen qintus.

Place the qintus in the despacho.

Sugar, sprinkle onto the qintus for sweetness.

Seashell, to hold the intent of the despacho.

14
Female and male figures. Place these into the shell to represent complementary opposites,
balance.

Two tiny qintus, place in the shell to nurture the male and female figures.

Gold and silver bead, put into the shell to represent the sun and the moon.

Gold and silver paper, small bits, put in the shell to represent the wisdom of the earth (gold)
and wisdom of the mountains (silver).

Gold cord, silver cord, put in the shell to represent our connection to earth and heaven.

Silver and gold flute or other music item(s). Place into the shell to represent sound. Celestial
music brings harmony to all elements of the despacho.

Candies to represent everything we are in relationship with, bringing harmony throughout our
environment including any enemies upstream, and making peace with ourselves, to be in right
relationship.

Candy sprinkles, multicolored, for the elemental spirits.

Chocolate for the earth.

Black licorice for protection.

Lima beans, to represent places of power that contain the creation energy of the universe, so we
can tap into this energy and come into synchronicity with our path.

Corn for sustenance, gifting back to the earth what we have been given.

Garbanzo beans for protection so our path is clear of obstacles.

Small red beans to represent places of emergence, such as springs.

Peanuts to represent old trees, the plant people.

Lentils to represent the abundance of the earth.

Raisins to represent the spirits of our ancestors, our blood lineage, for healing for them and for
us.

Cranberries to represent our gardens, our localities.

Figs to represent spirits of ancient ones who dwell in sacred mountains.

Starfish to connect us to the stars and bring our destiny into this world.

15
Animal crackers to honor all animal spirits.

Alphabet noodles to enable us to step outside of time and beyond language and linear reasoning
to true understanding and wisdom.

Two candy frogs as messengers to carry our prayers.

One dollar or other paper money, as a measure of our success to ensure the success of the
despacho.

Cotton balls to represent clouds, the provider of the waters.

Rainbow yarn or multi-color ribbons to represent the rainbow and a bridge between the worlds
and our capacity for transcendence.

More yarn to encircle the despacho. This represents the weaving or tying together of our prayers
and offering to bring them into harmony.

Confetti to celebrate all life.

Flowers for healing.

Feather for flight.

Important: To keep the prayers intact, do not turn the despacho upside down or shake it up.

Fold despacho. One by one, bring each corner of the paper over the contents of the despacho so
all corners overlap in the center. Now the despacho is a small square.

Tie despacho closed (as a gift) with yarn or ribbon, remembering to protect the prayers by not
turning it upside down or shaking it up.

Last qintu, blow into it the intention to include any forgotten prayers. Tuck this under the yarn
tie.

Within 24 hours of making this despacho, burn it for an explosive transformation. Make a fire
with enough fuel to completely burn your despacho, or use a gas fireplace or gas barbeque.
When the despacho is placed in the fire, do not look at it except to make sure it is burning well.
This symbolizes non-attachment to outcome and a release to all claim to that which is being
given away. If you can’t burn the despacho, or for slower, more steady results, bury it or put it in
a body of water.

House Cleaning Despacho

If you do nothing else for spring cleaning, make the House Cleaning Despacho. You can

stir things up energetically by doing extra cleaning yourself a day or two before making this

despacho. After it’s complete, be on alert for impressive results: a sweeter home life including

fewer accidents and misplaced items, even more fun times.

The House Cleaning Despacho’s benefits include improved entertaining and happier

service people, from housekeepers and gardeners to painters. And the more orderly your closets,

cabinets and drawers, the cleaner your home tends to stay energetically.

Make this despacho when moving to a new home or preparing a home for sale. Heavy

and/or disordered energy can actually drive away buyers, causing a house to linger on the market

and cost extra money, especially when housing prices are declining. Disordered energy can also

17
attract problematic buyers and, worst case, prevent a house from selling at all. This despacho

helps replace heavy and disordered energy with light and orderly energy, the types that are

conducive to positive actions and activities.

If a fire, accident, or other adverse event has occurred in a house, use the House Cleaning

Despacho to clear any related heavy energy.

Blow your prayers into the qintus. Make a prayer to sweep the house energetically. Make another
prayer to scrub the house energetically, inside and out, all surfaces, horizontal and vertical. Make
a prayer to freshen the house. Make prayers to clean and clear away any energy related to an
adverse event at the house, such as an accident. Make prayers to attract goodness to your house
including good luck, and good friends and workers. If you are selling the house, make prayers to

18
quickly attract the highest possible offer from a buyer who will close escrow. If you are moving
to the house, make prayers for many happy times to come there. Make at least a dozen qintus.

Place the qintus in the despacho.

Beautiful Breasts Despacho

This despacho helps clear heavy or disordered energy related to the breasts in the body’s

energy field. It also helps clear heavy energy that impairs the nurturing function, thus restoring

breast health and the nurturing function.

Remember that healing and curing are different and this despacho brings healing, which

might help support any cure you seek, but not necessarily. It will bring healing however.

22
An important part of this despacho is to give thanks for any breast illness or non-

nurturing experiences. Even if you don’t feel grateful, give thanks anyway by blowing your

thanks into a qintu, knowing that as you heal, you will receive related gifts.

At the same time, forgive yourself and others for any imagined blame. Release anger,

resentments and judgements so you can be freer to step into a new way of relating to the world.

Many who experience serious illness, for example, receive the gift of a new level of desire and

commitment to live their lives more fully, in greater joy.

Piece of paper measuring approximately 30” x 30”. White is traditional, wrapping paper works
well too. Make the despacho in the center of the paper, leaving enough room on all four sides to
fold it up as a gift when finished.

Pink peanuts or other flesh colored beans or legumes, make two largish circles, two breasts
(see photo).

Darker pink flowers or other round item to represent nipples (see photo).

Sugar, for sweetness and love, perhaps in the form of a Southern Cross, a guiding principle of
the southern hemisphere.

Blow your prayers into the qintus, your prayers might include…
• A prayer to release any heavy or disordered energy in your field that contributed to
imbalance. Try to sense where this disordered energy may be in your body and how
it feels and blow this feeling into the qintus with the intention of releasing it. Do this
for every type of related disordered energy you sense in your body.
• A prayer to heal and restore breast health.
• A prayer to heal and restore the nurturing function.
• Prayers for assistance in releasing any possibly related undesirable behaviors (such
as smoking).
• Prayers for releasing any related toxicities in the body, such as chemical residue
build-up.
• Prayers to release and heal any negative feelings such as fearfulness and anger and
sadness.
• A prayer to honor and give thanks for any disease. (Even if you don’t feel thankful
right now, giving thanks helps release related negative energy and thus helps pave
the way for healing. Know that eventually you will receive valuable lessons and gifts
related to any disease.)
• A prayer to release and forgive yourself for any imagined blame.
• Prayers for emotional strength, clarity, peace of mind and wisdom.
• Prayers for assistance in finding the right health care providers and making the right
decisions.

Make at least a dozen qintus.

Place the qintus in the despacho.

Happy Heart Despacho

From a simple lack of deep joy and contentment (love related or not) to heart ache to

heart disease, the Happy Heart Despacho helps heal all matters of the heart. Specifically, it helps

you become a more loving person to others and especially to yourself.

Use qintu prayers to assist you in living more fully from the heart and make decisions

based on what you truly desire. Make more qintu prayers to assist you in supporting others to

enjoy these results too.

27
Include a qintu into which you have blown your thanks for any heart-related condition.

Do this whether you feel thankful or not, knowing you will receive valuable lessons related to

the heart. Make more qintus for assistance in releasing yourself and others for any imagined

blame. Doing this is important for making peace with the past and becoming free to move on.

The more you do this, the more space you’ll make in your heart for being filled with the

beautiful gifts of heart-based living.

• A prayer to flush deposits from heart valves and arteries and restore valve and artery
health.
• A prayer to heal and restore heart vitality and strength.
• Prayers for assistance in releasing any undesirable behaviors (such as smoking or
overeating).
• Prayers for releasing any related toxicities in the body, such as chemical residues or
arterial plaque build-up.
• Prayers for assistance in finding the right health care providers and making the right
decisions.

Despacho to Heal The Feminine

The feminine is about feeling, so

when feelings are amiss, (such as caring

about the wrong things or the wrong

people, that’s a good indicator of feminine

wounding. It might even indicate the

absence of the feminine. The more this is

healed, the less you fear and the less you

resort to control or force -- with others as

well as yourself -- to get what you want.

When bullying ends, it is replaced by real

power or love, which is based on genuine

acceptance of yourself and others as you

truly are.

Both women and men can also use

this despacho to heal sexual wounding

associated with sexual abuse, such as rape or even simply marrying a nice person for the wrong

reasons.

This despacho offers significantly unique healing for men, who all have an inner

feminine aspect (what Carl Jung referred to as the “anima”). An intact, healed anima is essential

for male spiritual wholeness. Still, many men today have animas that are missing. So if you are a

man, please be sure to make this despacho.

32
The despacho itself features a place setting, plate, and silverware (use doll house

miniatures or draw these items). This place setting represents the act of making a place for the

return of the anima if it is indeed missing. Another important item in this despacho is a large

pinkish flower that represents female potency. When women make this despacho, the place

setting acts as a soul retrieval piece, making room for the return of soul parts that fled as the

result of a traumatic sexual experience.

After you burn this despacho, be on the lookout for signs that healing is underway. If you

are male, you may dream of a woman returning to you or that you are receiving women’s

clothing and accessories, such as a cooking knife, (which represents a female warrior knife and is

essential at a certain point in everyone’s spiritual healing journey). One man I know with an

intact, healed anima owns an impressive set of cooking knives and is a gourmet chef. Men and

women who make this despacho may discover a new interest in cooking or other feminine

activities.

If you are a male making this despacho and have a female partner, it’s strongly

recommended she make the Despacho to Heal the Masculine. If you are a male and have a male

partner, it’s strongly recommended the two of you make this despacho together.

This is one of the most powerful despachos that anyone, female or male, can make.

33
Incense, 2 sticks, criss-crossed, invites the presence of the divine, place on top of the sugar to
represent the assemblage of reality, the intersecting of time and space for the manifestation of
life to occur.

Anise seeds, sprinkle over the incense to feed the elemental spirits of earth, fire, water and air.

Lavender and/or rosemary and/or sage for cleansing and the power of directed action.

Rice for fertility and abundance.

forgiving).
• Prayers releasing any shame you feel associated with your sexuality.
• Prayers for the restoration of sexual purity.
• Prayers for the return of any soul parts that fled as a result of a sexually traumatic

37
Despacho to Heal The Masculine

The masculine is about

doing. When the ability to

accomplish is impaired, it often

results from masculine wounding

or even a missing masculine

aspect. The more this is healed, the

easier it becomes to get things

done.

In present time, a common

form of male wounding occurs in

response to a lack of support for

worldly endeavors, especially

during the teen years when we hear

the passionate stirrings of our first

call to destiny. For example, a

father or even an entire family might pressure a young man or woman to go into a field to which

he or she doesn’t feel called. Succumbing to such pressure results in the individual never

achieving genuine satisfaction, distinction and greatness in the workplace. Or perhaps a young

person is repeatedly told he or she will never amount to anything. This too can impair one’s

ability to step fully into his or her destiny. In either case, this despacho supports healing such

matters.

38
This despacho also offers especially important healing that is unique to women who all

have an inner masculine aspect (what Carl Jung referred to as the “animus”). It is so essential

that, without it, female spiritual wholeness is impossible.

Still, most women are missing it. So if you are female, please be sure to make this

despacho. It features a place setting, plate and silverware (use doll house miniatures or draw

these), to make a place in your life for the return and healing of the inner masculine, plus an ear

of corn to symbolize male potency. For men who make this despacho, the place setting facilitates

any necessary soul retrieval, making a place energetically for the return of soul parts that fled as

a result of a traumatic masculine wounding.

If you are a female, after you burn this despacho, look for signs that represent your

masculine aspect (or animus) returning and healing. Shortly after I made this despacho, I

dreamed a man was returning to my life and then I dreamed I was laundering dirty old men’s

clothing. I eventually dreamed I got new men’s clothing for myself. (Notice the progression from

the theme of “old” to “new” clothes, which represented a certain type of healing.) Then my

mother, who unwittingly gives me timely and symbolic presents, gave me a hunting knife. This

represented a male warrior knife (as compared to my female warrior knife, which is a large

chef’s knife) that my inner male required on the symbolic, energetic level for his healing

journey.

If you are a female and have a male partner, it’s strongly recommended that he make the

despacho that appears before this one, to heal the feminine. If you are female and have a female

partner, it is strongly recommended that she do this despacho with you.

Whatever your gender, this is one of the most powerful and rewarding despachos you

will ever make.

Power Animal Despacho

Power animals are animal archetypes that share their healing powers or medicine with us.

The healing powers are each animal’s unique collection of characteristics, which can be applied

to our lives for our benefit.

How do you “get” a power animal? Well, the one that can best serve you chooses you. So

when an animal shows up in your dream, this can be a new power animal announcing it’s coming

to your aid. Having a significant physical experience with an animal, usually a wild one, is

44
another good sign this animal is coming to your assistance. Or you can use a more deliberate

approach, such as the raffle that follows, to help a power animal choose you. It works!

Be sure to learn as much as you can about your power animal (e.g., if and how it hunts,

what it eats, what mating habits it has, and other unique characteristics). Then consider how

these characteristics might benefit you. For example, opossums are masters of playing dead, a

unique and important survival skill. So if the opossum is your power animal, you will discover

that “playing dead” at certain times is an important skill that, used judiciously, better enables you

to survive and thrive.

If a lowly animal chooses you, be open-minded, for all animals are mighty on the

energetic level. For example, a mouse, especially adept at nesting, once chose me and brought

me invaluable assistance in setting up my new home. On another occasion, a tarantula chose me.

In my dreams it was massive, sci-fi monster-sized, and amazingly adept at devouring (clearing

away) heavy energy.

Bonding with your power animal is an important way to establish a strong relationship

and making a Power Animal Despacho helps you achieve this. Use it to give thanks to your

animal for being available to you. Also make specific requests and prayers for assistance. You

will discover they can share impressive powers with you!

New Love Despacho

How can a despacho help you find a new love? By jumpstarting a process for meeting up

with a new partner that few are aware of. It starts with connecting energetically. After this has

happened, your new partner’s physical arrival may be sudden or it may take a while.

Signs this process is underway can include imagery (in dreamtime or awake time) about

such a journey that includes fishing, meeting a princess or prince, pitching a story, being in a

51
courtyard, playing a musical instrument, singing, going to dinner, getting engaged, and setting up

a new household. Getting a new phone represents energetic connection and communication.

Also look (in dreamtime and awake time) for clues that suggest the presence of a true

love energetically or physically. The related imagery will be natural, such as a real flame or fire,

the ocean, and a natural paradise -- perhaps a garden or a lush locale like Hawaii.

To speed the arrival of your heart’s desire, make yourself fully available. Also get

yourself in order, including healing as much as possible. And get rid of any decorative frogs that

can attract undesirable matches. Then remember to do the activities you love most. This will help

the universe arrange for your paths to cross.

For best results, make an Aya Despacho before making this one to completely clear

yourself energetically of romantic attachments from the past.

Red wine. Call on the earth to bless this first layer, then sprinkle some red wine onto the
despacho.

52

Let your prayers be romance-related. Specific requests might
include the attributes and interests you’d like your new partner to have. Remember not to request
a romance with anyone specific however. Try to make at least a dozen qintus.

Place the qintus in the despacho.

Sugar, sprinkle onto the qintus for sweetness.

Seashell, to hold the intent of the despacho.

Princess and prince figures. Place these into the shell to represent complementary opposites,
balance and communion.

Silver and gold flute or other music item(s). Place into the shell to represent sound. Celestial
music brings harmony to all elements of the despacho.

A gourmet hamburger or a gourmet hotdog, to represent your availability. Use a hamburger if

you are female; a hotdog if you are male. Make sure this is a GOURMET hamburger or hotdog
by using gourmet condiments or adding something special such as basil or cilantro on the
hamburger or a mustard leaf on top of the hotdog. You can make it yourself. Or buy one and
embellish it. Or you can draw a colorful picture of one. This is the centerpiece of this despacho,
the item that anchors and defines the entire despacho. Make it beautiful. If you are vegetarian,
use a meatless burger or dog.

Candies to represent everything we are in relationship with, bringing harmony throughout our
environment including any enemies upstream, and making peace with ourselves, to be in right
relationship.

Candy sprinkles, multicolored, for the elemental spirits.

53

54

55
Aya (Death) Despacho

The Aya Despacho is traditionally used to honor passing. It can also be used for any

event that requires closing an old life chapter and stepping into a new one, such as the passing of

an undesirable habit, perhaps overeating or substance abuse, a job, or even a relationship.

The word aya means death in the Q’uechua language. Thus, an Aya Despacho brings an

energetic death to any inappropriate connections between an old life and a new one, rendering

56
you free to step into a new life. Achieving this healthy, energetic closure and freedom is the goal

of the Aya Despacho.

This despacho is made of rainbow layers including a rainbow bridge to assist crossing

over from the old to the new. Any soul fragments that may be still stuck, along with any

unfinished business, is called and placed in the despacho to be burned so the soul doesn’t have to

do this work to come to completion. Heavy, disordered energy is transformed into fuel to help

send the person on.

Make your Aya Despacho ceremony a beautiful one, honoring the individual who has

passed, or who is passing into a new life chapter. Include some favorite foods and stories.

Celebrate and give thanks for the lessons learned.

After burning this despacho, don’t be alarmed if you dream about dying and death,

perhaps your own. This is commonly a symbolic sign that your Aya, or death, Despacho was

indeed effective.

A piece of beautiful paper measuring around 30” x 30”.

Red and white wine in glasses. Into each, blow intentions to celebrate the passing of a life and
offer thanks to heaven and earth by pouring outside at the base of a tree.

Black layer, represents the lower world, the unmanifest, the potential.

Sugar in the four directions.

36 or more leaves (cocoa leaves or bay leaves or similar sized flat leaves).

Red and white carnation petals (optional).

Make the leaves and carnation petals into qintus by putting three leaves together, faces up, with
the largest leaf in the back and the smallest in the front, then a red carnation petal for the earth,
then a white carnation petal for the mountains, on top of the leaves. The three leaves represent

57
the lower, middle, and upper worlds; power, love, intellect; past self, present self, becoming self
(the healed enlightened self of knowing, wisdom and availability).

Make five or more qintus to represent all that is unmanifest in your (or the passed person’s) life,
your potential.

Cocoa powder or cocoa seeds to represent the unmanifest.

Two red kidney beans (use a black marker to make a dot on one, this is the masculine one) or
huayruro seeds, masculine and feminine for balance and to bring balance.

Beef jerky or llama fetus*, to represent unborn potential.

Cheese or llama fat to represent the capability of animating the unmanifest. It is the fuel to make
the unmanifest, manifest.

Red layer (make above black layer), represents Mother Earth, Pachamama.

Chocolates for the earth.

Red wine, sprinkle onto this layer, saying thank you to the earth for her blessings.

Photo of the person.

lived reality.

More qintus with red and white carnation petals, put in your prayers.

Silver and gold leaf to represent the knowledge of the sun and the knowledge of the mystery of
the moon.

Cocoa powder or cocoa seeds

White layer covers everything. This is the layer of ONENESS/NOTHINGNESS.

White tissue paper placed over entire despacho.

Fold and tie with silver and gold thread.

Last qintu, gently blow into this qintu “anything else that needs to be included, any forgotten
prayers.” Tuck this under the yarn.

Burn this despacho within 24 hours. Make a fire with enough fuel to completely burn your
despacho. When it is placed into the fire, do not look towards the flames until after the offering is
burned. This symbolizes non-attachment to outcome and a release to all claim to that which is
being given away. According to legend, as the despacho burns, Apuschin, the spirit of the great
condor, descends and consumes any hucha (heavy energy) present, then brings the prayers up to
the heavens.

Finding a use for a llama fetus is an example of the gentle creativity and economy of the

people of the high Andes, much of whose livelihoods come from herding alpaca and

llama. A place in a despacho is a place of honor for the llama fetus. Oftentimes they are

colorfully decorated.

60

Make this despacho to help

set the stage for an extra beautiful

64
Wedding Despacho

Making this despacho serves as a visioning ceremony in which the couple weaves their

most fantastical dreams of their desired future together.

The ideal time to make the Wedding Despacho is a week or two before your wedding.

Allow plenty of time for you and your betrothed to think about what you want that future to

include. Don’t be modest, for the universe has the ability to provide abundance to all. Include

prayers for a surplus of every form of wealth; physical, emotional and spiritual. Also, be as

65
specific as you like. For example, if you want to eventually move, make qintu prayers to help

bring your new home to you including the money to purchase it, and paving the way for a move

to a new community if that is your desire.

This despacho can also be made to heal, re-vision or renew a marriage.

Piece of paper measuring approximately 30” x 30”. White is traditional, wrapping paper works

Bury this despacho for a slow, sustained release.

68
Cuti (Protection) Despacho

Cuti means turning back or shedding off. The Cuti Despacho achieves this energetically

by using irritants to repel irritants (of the energetic sort). To do this, it features lots of irritants

and darkness -- from the paper it is made on, to the ingredients that are predominantly red and

black, and lots of salt, chili peppers, and even dead bugs.

Make this despacho to ward off energetic attacks such as anger, jealousy, envy or even

gossip directed at you. For extra protection when making it, wear a black poncho or other black

clothing, and assemble and burn this despacho very quickly.

69
Black or very dark paper measuring approximately 30” x 30”.

SHAKE DESPACHO VIGOROUSLY TO MIX EVERYTHING UP.

Burn this despacho immediately. Make a big enough fire to burn the despacho completely,

spirit of the great condor, descends and consumes any hucha (heavy energy) present, then brings
the prayers up to the heavens.

71
Chaska (Star) Despacho

This is an offering to Chaska, our local star, the sun. It is made in response to events of

catastrophic proportions, such as earthquakes and war. These events are large enough to require

the assistance of Pachamama (the earth), the Apus (mountains), and Chaska to bring balance. So

the goal is to evoke the power and blessings of all three to bring right relationship and alignment

wherever necessary on earth.

72
The Chaska Despacho is an offering to bring assistance in reversing global warming. If

enough people make this despacho, it will quietly and comfortably fade away as public policy

becomes increasingly earth-friendly, and as businesses offer more and more environmentally

friendly products and services, and consumers enthusiastically embrace them. If these ideas

appeal to you, help usher in this new era in by making this despacho. Doing so may be the most

significant contribution you can make as an individual to help avert this threat.

If you want to make a Chaska Despacho to bring balance and healing to another event

(such as an earthquake or a war), make your qintu prayers for healing that event.

Sunflower and other yellow flowers that have the appearance of a sun, such as yellow daisies,
for healing.
