History of ABCD School of Coffee
Hendri Kurniawan started A Bunch of Caffeine Dealers kiosk in Pasar Santa, South
Jakarta, in 2012 as his office, hangout place, and a hub for a small circle of specialty
coffee practitioners. In 2014, with Venerdi Handoyo, Izman Ramdhan, and other
baristas he started #ngopidipasar (coffee break in a traditional market place) events
every weekend where people are invited to taste specialty coffee without any
obligation to pay. Those who enjoy the coffee can nominalize their generous
appreciation in a red jar.
The #ngopidipasar events attracked a big crowd, triggering a huge curiosity over
specialty coffee. To answer this budding curiosity, Hendri Kurniawan started his first
coffee class in August 2014 in the 2x6 squaremeters kiosk. ABCD School of Coffee
was then informally started.
The coffee classes never stops running since then. At the moment ABCD School of
Coffee has left its original premise and moved to a space one hundred times larger in
Gondangdia area, Central Jakarta, and is running more classes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the classes for beginners?

ABCD Class begins with Appreciation modul that is the starting point of your coffee
journey. It is good for beginners. To join the individual classes of Brewing, Cupping
and Definitive Espresso it is compulsory to join the Appreciation Class first. Basically,
any program you choose to take in ABCD School of Coffee will start with
Appreciation modul, except for Latte Art: Intermediate Level Class.

I have had enough understanding about coffee. Can I skip Appreciation Class to
join the other classes?
Appreciation Class shares not only history and facts about coffee, but also our
philosophy in coffee; how do we see the trend, build connection, align ourselves,
and more. The class is also a chance for each participant to share what they know
about coffee to each other, thus creating a basis of a strong network. It is always
compulsory to join Appreciation Class first.

Do you hold classes in other cities?

At the moment we only hold classes in our facility in Jakarta.

If I take all four individual classes in the weekend can I pay the price of ABCD Class?
The price of the individual classes includes a different benefit that the ABCD Class
cannot offer in the weekdays, and that is the lenience to customize your selection of
classes according to your needs and schedule in the weekend. To optimize the
budget that you have now we suggest you to either take the ABCD Class in the
weekdays, or join the individual classes in stages rather than taking all four classes in
one weekend.

Can the certificate from ABCD School of Coffee guarantee me to find a job?
The certificate that we publish is a certificate of completion. It may complement
your curriculum vitae and portfolio when applying for jobs, but it will not serve to
guarantee your competence as a professional barista. However, as graduates of
ABCD School of Coffee you will automatically join a network of over 1,000 graduates,
including many coffee shop owners who may, but not obliged to, give your priority
to get a job in their shops.

Do you have Roasting Class?

We conduct special classes from time to time; espresso masterclass, water class,
service class, etc., including roasting classes. We will inform the schedule of these
classes through our social media channels, especially Instagram account
@abcd_coffee.
