1.0 INTRODUCTION

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the management of information through the whole life
cycle of a built asset, from initial design all the way through to construction, maintaining and
finally de-commissioning, through the using of digital Modelling. BIM is all about collaboration
between engineers, owners, architects and contractors in a three dimensions virtual construction
environment (common data environment), and it shares information across these disciplines.

Building Information Modelling allows design and construction teams to communicate about
design and coordinate information across different levels that has been unseen before. This
information remains with the project, from before beginning construction, right throughout its
lifetime. It also helps to analyze any potential impacts.

Through the using of Building Information Modelling and BIM certification, the following key
benefits can be gained:

• Faster and efficient processes

• Increased productivity and speeds up delivery
• Reduced uncertainty
• Controlled whole-life costs and environmental data
• Avoidance of rework costs
• Improved safety
• Opportunity to secure Government contracts and meet BIM Level 2
• Reduced on-site waste
• Prevention of errors

This task target to demonstrate accomplishment of BIM model to envision the undertaking plan.
It accentuates the significance of having appropriate BIM learning to ensure the plan procedure
succeed. This venture additionally to examine about the elective plan model of existing V5 hostel
utilizing Revit programming.

2.0 OBJECTIVE

1. To acquire, produce, and apply the fundamental of BIM in building process.

2. To analyze and propose the improvement of building performance.
3. To implement and execute BIM software in term of building analysis, energy analysis and
solar analysis.

3.0 SCOPE OF STUDY

The project will be focus more to structural drawing and architectural to create the building based
on the existing V5 hostel at Universiti Teknologi Petronas. By using the Revit software for this
project is to advance the performance through BIM function by describing the relative that have
not been analyze by students. Beside that this project also is to perform integration system and
solar analysis as well as purpose alternative to improve the building model.

4.0 METHODOLOGY

1. Design the model of the building use Revit

5.0 BUILDING INFORMATION

5.1 Architectural Drawing

Architectural drawing characterized to the instruction on how the structure will be construct. It is
to guarantee the structure can be worked and sufficiently solid to withstand support the loads. For
architectural drawing, it consists of the dimensions of interest of measurements which help in
planned to respectively direct construction method. Also, design attracting helps choosing the
budget and schedule that are required for this design. Figures below the architectural drawing that
have been modified using Revit software.

5.2 Structural Drawing
Structural drawing is illustrated from the design drawing yet with more subtle elements as it
represented to the interrelated component in the building. It is by and large arranged to
fundamentally concern on the load that beam or column need to withstand for the structure. The
model included slab, column, beam and footing in view of the load for every part in the model
building by utilizing same size, plan and mechanical framework from architectural drawing.
Structural drawing is essential as it helps contractor workers in itemizing work, creating and
introducing parts of the structure. From figures below, the network lines demonstrate the beam
and column situated at every member of the structure which help temporary workers in during the
development.

6.0 DISCUSSION

6.1 Alternative Design

Based on the sharing idea, design alternative can make the idea unique to redesign the structure.
By contribution the idea it helps perpetuated with good design for the new product. In this
project, Village 5 (V5) has been chosen as reference of existing hostel and the project has been
redesign roughly same with Village 5 plan. Many alternatives had been added to generate more
energy saving building and aesthetic values.

1. 6th floor
Due to UTP location is considered rural area and lack of rent house around Seri Iskandar,
it is creative to add one more floor for each V5 building hence so many students still do
not have room to rent outside UTP.

2. Glass Design
Glass is one of the most sophisticated and versatile materials used in the construction
industry. Extensive use of glass helps in creating a very hi-tech and modern look in
buildings. Glass is available in numerous varieties that respond to different functions.
Furthermore, the glass it is a very light weight building material hence helps in reducing
the dead load of the building and the glass is treated so as to reduce glare, prevent heat
absorption and resistance to UV light. This helps in making the building energy efficient
in term minimize the electricity.

3. Steel Structure
Steel is a highly durable metal. It can withstand a considerable amount of external pressure.
Hence, steel structures are earthquake resistant whereas concrete structures are brittle.
Concrete is not as resistant as steel. Besides that, Steel structures have a good load carrying
capacity unlike concrete structures, which have a low load carrying capacity.

4. Solar Panel
Solar power systems derive clean, pure energy from the sun. Installing solar panels on the
building helps combat greenhouse gas emissions and reduces our collective dependence
on fossil fuel. Traditional electricity is sourced from fossil fuels such as coal and natural
gas. Renewables energy also improves public health.

5. Precast Concrete
The actual erection of the buildings on site is executed in a much shorter space of time
compared to in-situ constructions. This is environmentally friendly and reduces noise and
dust pollution. Moreover, concrete as a natural building material is 100% recyclable and
is, in combination with steel, a safe, sustainable and earthquake-resistant material with little
wear and tear. Our individual pages provide interesting facts about the various benefits of
precast concrete elements.

9
6. Interior and Exterior Wall (Interior-block 140)
Block 140 is a heavy material that stores heat and cool air. Thus, the indoor climate is very
pleasant and save energy. Bricks also can easily absorb humidity, as they have a surface
which is more diffusion-open than other materials.

6.2 Solar Analysis

The sun path is a visual representation of the sun’s range of movement across the sky at the
geographic location specified for the project. The sun path displays in the context of the project
and allows us to position the sun at any point within its range of movement, between sunrise and
sunset, throughout the year. Using the sun path’s on-screen controls, we can create solar studies
by placing the sun at any point along its daily path, and at any point along its analemma as
described in the figures below.

To experience the full potential of solar studies, display the sun path, and then use the sun path’s
context menu to access the Sun Settings dialog whenever we need it. Using the sun path and Sun
Settings dialog together gives us the combined advantage of the sun path’s highly visual,
interactive controls and the dialog’s presets and shared settings. The times displayed in the sun
path and Sun Settings dialog are in local time for our project location. Because local time can vary
from solar time by an hour or more, depending on our location, the sun’s position in the sun path
is shown in solar time to ensure that the sun is directly overhead at solar noon.

6.3 Rooftop Solar

The benefits will open up opportunity to us to install solar panels on the rooftop of our building
which absorb radiation energy emitting from the sun. The energy being absorbed will go through
a process known as a photovoltaic process, during this process electricity is generated. The
generated electricity will be linked to electricity grid and exported into the grid. A utility company
such as TNB then pays the individual, a fixed premium rate per kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity.
By installing the building solar system, we can now sell home solar electricity to TNB.

In order to kick start the green revolution towards renewable energy in Malaysia, SEDA designed
Feed in Tariff (Fit) incentive. The FiT incentive facilitates the sale of electricity generated from
cleaner renewable source such as biomass, biogas, small hydro and solar photovoltaic (PV), to be
sold back to utility companies at a fixed price for a specific period of time. Land of eternal sunshine
is what Malaysia have been known for, though we do have our share of rainy, cloudy and more
recently, hazy days, Malaysia still received high concentration of strong sunray throughout the
year. With this, you can leverage the geographical advantage to increase positive cash flow using
Solar Photovoltaic System.

6.4 Energy Analysis

With BIM, energy analysis can be run which it is a process in the facility design phase of building
energy simulation programs use a properly adjusted BIM model to conduct energy assessments
for the current building design. After the simulation, it proved that by using BIM the building
energy standard compatibility can be inspected that shown in Appendix. It also helps to seek
opportunities to optimize proposed design to reduce structure's life-cycle costs. The result of
energy cost mean shows below proved that the energy cost does not exceed maximum range which
it reduces structure’s life-cycle costs of the proposed design alternative.

7.0 CONCLUSION

Based on the conclusion of this project, by using the BIM software which is Revit can make us to
interpret on how to create a visualizing based on the actual building. The using of Revit software
we can analyze the 2D and 3D model of the building. Besides that, this is capable to do the
structural drawing and architectural. Based on plan, we make the design more alternative compare
the existing design. The alternative design provides more energy saving and aesthetic value to the
building by only using software. In additionally this analysis that has been run for structural
analysis energy analysis, solar analysis and building analysis to backing the proposed design
alternative. Moreover, the type of material can be chosen for example the glass and solar panel can
be place earlier which help the contractor during the construction.
