Lesson Idea Name: HOOT REVIEW

Content Area: ELA
Grade Level(s): 7th

what
the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Using Kahoot! engages students by assisting their attention span. Students who struggle to pay
attention will perform better on this than they usually would without SRTs.
Representation: The anonymity of the quiz supports shy and unsure students, promoting participation.
Action and Expression: Students enjoy the Kahoot! as a competitive game rather than viewing it as an
assignment or chore. They can express themselves by creating whatever (appropriate) nickname they want.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Students will have already read HOOT. They will be allowed to reference the text in front of them and their
notes during the Kahoot! quiz, and have been provided with a classroom set of tablets to participate on. They
will understand that they will be making inferences about what the text says explicitly.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
x☐xAssess prior knowledge ☐Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) x☐xTo illuminate common
misconceptions x☐xFormative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐Summative assessment of content knowledge x☐x Test preparation
☐Survey/Poll ☐Discussion starter ☐“Homework” collection ☐Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Students respond to the questions asked about the passages. They will analyze what the text says explicitly as
well as make inferences from the text. The activity should be given enough time to calmly, not rushed, discuss
correct and incorrect answers. Each question has a 2 minute time limit so students can reference their notes
and the text as needed.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
x☐x Multiple choice ☐Multiple select x☐xTrue/False ☐Yes/No
☐Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

x☐xYes ☐No
☐Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
x☐x Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
This way we can immediately assess where we are academically and take care of misconceptions or problems
as they arise. This will also show students what questions they need to study for the exam.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
Students will use the SRT activity to review for the upcoming summative test.
How will the data be used? The data will be used to analyze student knowledge about an assigned text
according to the standard. Anonymity makes students feel safe and allows them to try their best without fear
of being embarrassed. The data will be immediately assessed and discussed as a class.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. Using Kahoot! will engage students much more than a
regular on paper quiz would. The competition to be the best will make them want to do their best. My goal is
to get students to engage in assessment more than before. Hopefully the immediate feedback on incorrect
answers will help fix their ideas and guide them towards the right path.

Reflective Practice: The activity needs to be extended into having fill in the blank or response questions.
Providing access to the Kahoot! at all times can supports students in their writing of a response essay later in
the class, or be a good study tool for a test. Other technology tools that allow for typed responses would give
a better idea of where the students are at in their learning.
