Lowering of Age Criminal Liability

This seminar was organized by our group and without bias I could say that there is a lot

I have learned from this talk. One particular significant learning that really struck is that

these children that the government considers as “criminals” are really just victims as

well. Victims of poor parenting, of poverty and of human trafficking. These children are

not entirely accountable for their actions for they still lack discernment at this age (9 yrs.

old).

HIV Awareness

This seminar is quite common and yet as common as it is, it was my first time attending

a talk about this topic. I learned that even if HIV awareness has been around for quite

some time now, there is still a need to educate other people about this. The stigma is

still there and is affecting the community and the victims of HIV as well. I learned that

this disease does not define the person who suffers from it. There is more of the person

than just “a person with HIV”.

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying happens very commonly especially during these times where social

media is at everyone’s fingertips. It is important that we consider what we post online

and remembering to think twice before posting anything. We should always remind

ourselves that there are real people with real feelings behind the screens of our virtual

world.

Prostitute

Prostitution is not something that is often talked about when we think about the

country’s major issues but it is something to be thought about. It happens even in

Cagayan de Oro city and is even rampant. We often hear about the prostitutes that wait

at the side of the roads waiting for costumers but what we don’t hear about are the

stories behind these prostitutes and think about the stories on why this was their career.

IX. Skill Areas: Identify three to five of the major skill set areas you have that would be
important for someone in your career field to have. Examples include: Focused Group
Discussion Facilitation, Thematic Analysis, Use of the SPSS software, Leadership, Basic
Counseling Skills, Basic Interviewing Skills, etc. explain how you achieved these skills and how
you can practice and master these skills.

Mentoring

My skills on mentoring were greatly influenced by our psychology subject called Group

Dynamics where we were tasked to mentor psychology freshmen about different important

lessons to prepare them for the upcoming years of being a psychology student. Different

significant lessons were taught to the freshmen and challenged my organization and teaching

skills contributing to the development of my skills in mentoring. Skills in mentoring can be

practiced through organizing trainings or through sharing your knowledge through a

mentoring session.

Focused Group Discussion Facilitation

Facilitation in Focused Group Discussions or FGD is something that I personally experienced

through the development of a psychological scale on “Daily Hassles Experienced by College

Students” and also through the completion of our thesis entitled “Coping Strategies of Parents

of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder” where we developed our own qualitative

questionnaire as well. It is through these experiences that I have learned the basics and flow of

a Focused Group Discussion. FGD facilitation can be practiced and mastered through doing

research in different fields in psychology via a group interview where you can practice

facilitation and find different ways in probing information from the interviewees.

Basic Interview Skills

My basic interview skills were honed from my various experiences on interacting with people

through different case studies. In doing case studies, a great deal of interview skills is needed in

order to acquire significant information from the interviewee and through my experience with

conducting a case study, I have developed basic interview skills. My interview skills were also

further honed from my on-the-job training where I worked under the field of Industrial

Psychology and experienced interviewing applicants. Basic interview skills is usually practiced

in the workplace and as well as case studies. This can be mastered through conducting random

interviews on a topic of your interest and try to come up with different techniques in

conducting a substantial interview.

X. Non-Academic Affiliations:

The Crusader Publication

The Crusader Publication is the official publication of Xavier University. I am a videographer in

the said organization and have directed a video production particularly the video on “XUFD

2018: Weaving the Ateneo Story”.

XI. Learning Insight:

Learnings in my 4 years of exposure to academic work in the program of Bachelor of

Science in Psychology might be very overwhelming to think of but I’ve come down to 3

significant lessons that I believe highlights my years in BS – Psychology. First of all, the

importance of mental health. I can’t stress this enough but mental health is just as

important as physical health and we should always take care of each others mental

health through ways even as simple as being kind and understanding to others. I also

learned the value of helping others, especially those who suffer from mental illness

because people of this type of illness are not taken seriously by society and are just

bluntly labeled as “buang”. It is through my exposure with different people with different

experiences that I have learned, helping others can have a significantly positive impact

in people’s lives. Helping sounds very cliché but it is really an important thing to do that

not only applies to the field of psychology but also to other fields as well. Lastly, I

learned the significance of hard work and perseverance. From doing researches, case

studies, field works it is through hard work and perseverance that I have reached this

from in the program. All requirements and deadlines might seem overwhelming but truly

if you just work hard on what you are passionate about and persevere in achieving your
goals, then these challenges will ultimately turn into triumphs. Once you achieve your

aims through hard work and perseverance then you will know that everything is worth it.

XII. Career Goals

In the next 3 years I aim to have a stable job in a company where I can apply my skills

in organizational psychology with a position in the Human Resource department. I have

learned different techniques and strategies in organizing trainings and administering

tests. I also aim to apply the best practice in the company to accomplish an efficient and

productive workplace.
