Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Social media, as stated by Nations (2009), are web-based communication tools that
enable people to interact with each other by both sharing and consuming information, to be afar
from each other yet to gain information as if both individuals are sitting beside each other. Social
media is a vague topic, used to represent different sites that helps communicate with different
people. According to Qualman (2009), Social media is the medium for the age of instant
communication- a network of websites and applications used for socialization. (Oxford
Dictionary, 2012), coined and hence the term “social networking”.

Social media is proven not just to communicate with other individuals in the interweb.
Moghavvemi et, al. (2018) interviewed and recorded the data of 30 students who went on to a
development scale of academic learning as a determinant in a social media site named YouTube,
which was then validated by the said students, and came up with the conclusion that social media
such as the site stated, if used properly, could change the addicting side into an academic one.
Social media now a days play a major role on different lives, according to Sadiq (2018), social
media partake the role to update and to share information without the use of heavy materials or
equipment to ship messages, social media makes an individual to feel like one is in a larger
community, to which it is just a false sense of connection.

However, extensive use of technology among students can become problematic. In particular
heavy use of social media can alter sleep and waking patterns, thus affect a student’s
performance at school. It is important to understand that some students misuse social networking
that reduces sleep quality which is vital for engaging in daily school-related activities. Students
who are tired and sleepy in class have trouble performing tasks related to academic performance,
such as effective time management, and sustaining effort, interest and attention. Therefore, they
may do poorly at school; and tired students feel less satisfied with their school experience
Background of the Study

According to Carton (2009) human had started social media as the industrial era rolls in,
to where technologies continue to enhance, making each and every communication easier. The
early record of social media dates back to 1792, where the use of telegram rose amongst the
netizens - the earliest transmission of messages over long distances (Ritholz, 2010). Borders
(2010) declared that social networking didn’t began when the computer took its rise, yet it had
first started at the rise and peak of telephones, due to changing times, variety of social media
took action and rose.

Due to the rise of the popularity of social networking and their tools and medium used for
connection to the interweb, different sites rose, even upon being unnoticed by the public-namely
Facebook, Friendster, Twitter, YouTube, etc., and by the means to the sites gaining popularity,
people started to get addicted about such sites, and left problems like attention seeking and lack
of sleep. According to Griffiths (2018), the use of social media had became a cornerstone of the
sense of belongingness that made individuals addicted in using such things. Social media made a
difference by being associated in many psychological problems, like Anxiety, Depression,
Loneliness, Attention seeking, Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and all due to addiction- and most
of the sites are present to modern smart phones, the usage of such medium became more
alarming, coining the term ‘fear of missing out’ (FOMO).

According to Graaf (2018) that a hour of social media a day can disrupts an individuals’
sleeping pattern, and to poor sleep would lead to poor academic performances, now a days, sleep
deprivation is a widespread problem amongst adolescents of the decade, insufficient sleep
amongst the adolescents has often been attributed to factors such as artificial lights, excess
caffeine intake and has no bedtime rule within the household, and the increase availability of
information and communication technology. Therefore, as stated by Echeburua E, de Corral P
(2010), addiction is the excessive usage of such networking sites and is supposed to be as like the
individual’s want to be engaged in sexual activities, and to do it in a daily basis.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to:

1. Investigate several factors in social media that keep students from getting proper
sleeping hours.
2. Determine how to manipulate the factors that would affect the individual into sleeping
earlier and getting more hours of sleep.
3. Removing the addiction by means of:
a. Rehabilitation.
b. Change in lifestyle.

Specific problems include:

a. Do social media affect the sleep quality of Senior High school students?
b. Which kind of social media affect the sleep quality of Senior High school students?
c. How time spent on using social relates to the sleep quality in Senior High school students
d. What factors affect poor sleep quality of Senior High school students?

Significance of the Study

The data gathered in this study would benefit :

Students - Since sleep play an important role in our overall health. Thus, individuals who
apply the recommended approach to getting enough sleep may improve themselves in terms of
efficiency and improvement on school-related activities. It would also raise awareness about our
priorities and responsibilities as an individual to change unhealthy sleeping habits.

Future Researchers - The gathered data can be used and to help further investigation
upon the problem.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This study will focus on gathering data using a survey-type questionnaire for senior high
school students at Arellano University Pasig. Only the strands that are having their classes in the
morning would be surveyed. The data gathered will be used to determine the factors affecting
sleep.

Definition of Terms
• Cornerstone- something of basic importance

• Deficit- an excess of expenditure over revenue

• Interweb- Internet

• Sleep deprivation- the situation or condition of suffering from a lack of sleep

• Social networking- the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users,
or to find people with similar interests to oneself.

METHODS OF STUDY AND SOURCES OF DATA

This chapter focuses on the methodology of the study. It presents the steps and
procedures that the researchers will perform to accomplish the objectives of the study. Discussed
in this chapter are the research setting, research respondents, research methodology, research
instruments and the timetable.

Setting

This study will be conducted at Arellano University – Andres Bonifacio Campus, and
most of the data gathered would be at the morning, from Monday to Friday.

Respondents

This study will be using students that have their classes at the morning as repondents.
A.M. shift students would give more reliable data for the respondents are needed to attend school
early in the morning.

Methodology Selected

This study uses the descriptive method of research. Descriptive research involves
gathering data that illustrates events and then organizes, tabulates and depicts and describes the
data collection. This study uses descriptions in order to clearly showcase the results of the study.

The researchers would use the random sampling technique and will have respondents per
strand for the morning shift.

Instruments

The sources of data will be the questionnares given by the researchers that will be
composed of questions related to the study.

The questionnares will have a bunch of questions that pertains to social media usage,
time management of the students and even their sleeping habits, all respondents are
recommended to answer the questionnare in no hurry for more clear and concrete answers.

Timetable
As for the validity of the researchers to gain the data, the researchers first will make an
excuse letter for the teachers designated in the classrooms that the researchers would collect data
in.

The reseachers would then prepare bundles of questionnare for the respondents to answer.

The research will be a day long data gathering phase, during the time given by the subject
facilitator, and would have all the available and approached participants answer the
questionnares given.
