Exercise A. On the Kinds of Quantitative Research Designs

Directions: On the spaces provided, write survey or experiment, indicating the kind of
quantitative research you will use, given the following problem inquiries, you, as
researcher, intend to investigate.
Survey A. how many students use the university library between 7AM and
8AM.
Survey B. how many hours adolescents to do Facebook in a day.
Survey C. the most frequently used student on service in your university.
Experiment D. the impact of blended learning on students enrolled in English 1.
Survey E. the number of students who read the broadsheets (newspapers)
daily

institution.
Survey G. the number of times students go to the guidance counselor for

under the ALS (Alternative Learning System) and those under the
regular Dep-Ed system of schooling.
___Survey____ P. The top 3 academic tracks chosen by SHS students in your school.
Exercise B. On Variables
Directions: Do as directed.
1. Distinguish independent from independent variables in a complete sentence/
 Independent variable is the variable that can stand alone in which it can be manipulated
or controlled while dependent variable is the variable that is being tested or measured
in an experiment.

2. Explain the term “control variable” in your own words in a complete sentence.
 Control variables are variables that is tested in an experiment and researchers look
closely into it because it can usually affect the dependent variable thus, to control these
variables, a statistical procedure will be used which is the analysis of covariance.

3. Explain “confounding variable” in your own words in a complete sentence.

 Confounding variables are variables that exist but are not actually tested in a study in
which these variables cannot give useful results and can also ruin an experiment.

4. Which of the two is the independent variable?

A. Students undergo blended learning in an English subject.
B. Students who undergo blended learning have improved grades in an English subject.
Explain your answer in a complete sentence.

 Letter A is the independent variable because it can stand alone and did not depend
on another variable. Whereas on letter B, it can be clearly seen that it has been tested
or measured.

5. Which of the two is the dependent variable?

A. A considerable number of consumers use the twin pack in a 3 in 1 coffee product.
B. A leading coffee manufacturer introduces twin pack in a 3 in 1 coffee product.
Explain your answer in a complete sentence.

 A dependent variable is when there are changes in the result of the independent
variable. In this case, when the manufacturer introduced the leading coffee product,
the consumers then started using the twin pack in a 3 in 1 coffee product. By that,
when consumers started using the twin pack in a 3 in 1 coffee product there were
changes and it can be clearly understood that it was being tested. Therefore, the
dependent variable is letter A.
