Introduction

The research is on “A STUDY ON QUALITY OF WORK LIFE”. Due to changes in

technology and to meet various demands of the employees and to withstand the place in

the Global market the company has to focus on employees satisfaction on major areas

like job security, job satisfaction, medical facilities, canteen facilities, rewards, ESI, etc.,.

Surveys are an effective way of knowing about employees’ quality of work life in the

organization. While exit interviews are generally used, they are a delayed way of

knowing the quality of work life.

Quality of Work Life (QWL) is a relatively new concept which is defined as the overall

quality of an individual's working life. QWL is sometimes considered as a sub-concept of

the broad concept of quality of life, which refers to the overall quality of an individual’s

life. Quality of life includes factors such as income, health, social relationships, and other

factors such as happiness and fulfillment. QWL being the main subject of the present

study meaning, definition, scope of the QWL, and QWL in the Indian context, etc., have

been discussed in this chapter.

The phrase ‘Quality of Work Life’ (QWL) connotes different meanings to different

people. Some consider it an industrial democracy or co-determination with increased

employee participation in the decision making process. For others, particularly managers

and administrators, the term denotes improvement in the psychological aspects of work to

improve productivity. Unions and workers interpret it as more equitable sharing of

profits, job security, healthy and congenial working conditions. Still others view it as

improving social relationship at workplace through autonomous work groups. Finally,

1
others take a broader view of changing the entire organizational climate by humanizing

work, individualizing organizations and changing the structural and managerial systems.

Management considers it as a broader view of changing the entire organizational climate

by humanizing work, individualizing organizations, and developing the structural and

managerial systems.

2
Aims & 0bjectives

 To know the overall quality of work life in the organization and its impact on

employees work culture.

 To measure the level of satisfaction of employees towards the quality of work life.

 To suggest suitable measures to improve the quality of work life.

 To identify the major areas of dissatisfaction if any, and provide valuable

suggestions improving the employees satisfaction in those areas.

 To analyze the findings and suggestion for the study.

3
Justification of the project

However, more complex models of an individuals experience in the workplace often

appear to be set aside in an endeavour to simplify the process of trying to measuring

“stress” or some similarly apparently discrete entity. It may be, however, that the

consideration of the bigger, more complex picture is essential, if targeted, effective action

is to be taken to address quality of working life or any of it’s sub-components in such a

way as to produce real benefits, be they for the individual or the organisation.

Quality of working life has been differentiated from the broader concept of Quality of

Life. To some degree, this may be overly simplistic, as Elizur and Shye,(1990)(3)

concluded that quality of work performance is affected by Quality of Life as well as

Quality of working life. However, it will be argued here that the specific attention to

work-related aspects of quality of life is valid.

Whilst Quality of Life has been more widely studied (4), Quality of working life, remains

relatively unexplored and unexplained. A review of the literature reveals relatively little

on quality of working life. Where quality of working life has been explored, writers differ

in their views on its’ core constituents.

It is argued that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts as regards Quality of

working Life, and, therefore, the failure to attend to the bigger picture may lead to the

failure of interventions which tackle only one aspect. A clearer understanding of the

inter-relationship of the various facets of quality of working life offers the opportunity for

improved analysis of cause and effect in the workplace.

4
Hypothesis
A Hypothesis consists either of a suggested explanation for an

observable phenomenon or of a reasoned proposal predicting a

possible causal correlation among multiple phenomena. The term

derives from theGreek, hypotithenai meaning "to put under" or "to

suppose." The scientific method requires that one can test a scientific

hypothesis. Researchers generally base such hypotheses on previous

observations or on extensions of scientific theories. Even though the

words "hypothesis" and "theory" are often used synonymously in

common and informal usage, a scientific hypothesis is not the same as

a scientific theory.

Hypothesis may be defined as a proposition or a set of proposition set

forth as an explanation for the occurrence of some specified group

of phenomenon either asserted merely as a provisional conjecture to

guide some investigation or accepted as highly probable in the light of

established facts. Quite often a research hypothesis is a predictive

statement, capable of being tested by scientific methods, that relates

an independent variable to some dependent variable.

Null Hypothesis
A null hypothesis is a hypothesis (within the context of statistical hypothesis testing) that

might be falsified on the basis of observed data. The null hypothesis typically proposes a

general or default position, such as that there is no relationship between two quantities, or

5
that there is no difference between a treatment and the control. The term was originally

coined by English geneticist and statistician Ronald Fisher.

The null hypothesis (often denoted by H0) formally describes some aspect of the

statistical "behaviour" of a set of data. The Null Hypothesis is of this project report is

that employees are highly dissatisfied with the quality of work life in the company.

ALTERNATE HYPOTHESIS

Alternative hypothesis is the "hypothesis that the restriction or set of

restrictions to be tested does NOT hold." (Often denoted H1) . Synonym

for 'maintained hypothesis.' The Alternate Hypothesis of this

project report is that employees are satisfied with the quality

of work life in the company.

Conclusion
Every organization has to satisfy some of the basic needs and

demands of its employees because the satisfied and motivated employees are

the source of achieving the organizational goals and objectives. In order to

use the maximum potential of the human resource, the organization has to

provide them with the best quality of their working life. Therefore every

organization needs to update and improve the quality of work life of the

employees.

From the literature reviewed it is clear that the overall quality of work

life of employees is good in the sector. This research highlights some of the

small gaps in employee’s satisfaction towards the quality of work life.

Social security scheme as well as welfare measures that are undertaken

by the company are appreciable. These measures are not only for the

company but also for the employees through satisfaction levels a company

can ascertain whether an employee has shown his/her best performance on

given job.

Welfare measures of the employees should be taken seriously by the

top management to improve the satisfaction level by providing various

benefits and facilities to them.
