Title:
Aim: to investigate the reaction of oxidising agents and reducing agents.
Materials: aqueous solution of acidified potassium manganate(VII), acidified potassium dichromate(VI),
potassium iodide, iron(II) sulfate and acidified hydrogen peroxide and five test tubes, measuring cylinder, 2
small beakers.
Procedures:
1. Labe the test tubes.
2. Place 5 cm3 of acidified potassium manganate(VII) solution into the first test tube. Slowly add
potassium iodide solution, shaking as you add the solution, until you see no further colour change.
3. Place 5 cm3 of acidified potassium manganate(VII) solution into the second test tube, 5 cm3 of acidified
potassium dichromate(VI) solution into the third test tube, 5 cm3 of potassium iodide solution into the
fourth test tube and 5 cm3 of iron(II) sulfate solution into the fifth test tube.
4. Slowly add acidified hydrogen peroxide solution to each tube, shaking as you add the solution, until you
see no further colour change.
5. Record in a table the original colour of each solution and the final color after mixing.
6. Explain the reason for the colour change that you observed in each reaction.
7. Comment on the behaviour of the acidified hydrogen peroxide.
Results:
Discussion:
Give reasonable explanations why the color changes in each test tube.
Write the half equation only for color change
Identify and clearly explain what is acting as oxidising agent or reducing agent
Reflection:
Relation to real life application
What have you learnt for the lab
