Soal :
Being successful in business takes much more than just a good product or service. With
more and more competition for consumers' business, companies want to maximize every
advertising dollar they spend. But while many companies focus mainly on TV commercials,
there are other ways of creating a brand image without spending huge amounts of money on
TV ads.

First, companies should choose their logo very carefully. A logo should be simple both in
design and color. It should also represent the "spirit" of the company. For example, airlines
like logos that are both solid and full of open space, representing security, motion, and the
open sky. Banks often use bulky and wide logos that give the impression of stability. A logo
will represent the company not only in advertising but in countless other ways: on its
letterhead, its website, its employee business cards, etc. But more than this, when
companies merchandise their logo, they release it so that it can be used on products like
hats, mugs, pens, jackets, backpacks, etc. These products can be sold or given out as gifts.
These products, often produced cheaply, are then given to customers who give the company
even more exposure.

Another alternative to expensive TV advertising can be accomplished by sponsoring big PR

events. For example, by spending $10,000 and setting up a scholarship for poor university
students, a company can host a banquet to give the scholarship money away, introducing
hundreds, if not thousands, of new people to its products. Other companies prefer to host
public events like film festivals. The company gives money to the organizers of the festival
and, in exchange, gets to advertise in printed programs and signage, as well as before or
after the films play in the theater. These kinds of events also help a company focus their
products or service on a very specific market, unlike TV ads which generally appeal to a
wider, less defined market of consumers.
By considering interesting and unusual ways of spendi

TEST

Dear Staff:

As you all know, our company is sponsoring two exciting PR events this summer. The first is
the Main Street Art Gala,
and we will be hosting a table there in order to attract new customers.
This festival will start on the 9th and run until the 14th of next
month. Two weeks later, we will be sponsoring the Heart Matters Marathon
for the Heart Disease Foundation. While we won't have a table at this
event, we will be providing staff members to assist Marathon organizers
on the day of the event.

We are seeking volunteers for both events. For any employees who
wish to volunteer their time on weekends, we will provide one half day
of vacation time for any full day at the Gala. The festival will need a
few staff members for weekday afternoons, but we are mainly seeking
weekend volunteers at this point. The Marathon day is scheduled for
Saturday the 30th of next month; any staff members who wish to
participate on this day will be given one half day of vacation time.
Note that all weekend volunteer activities will include one FULL day of
volunteer work.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide any payment for these

days (beyond the vacation time given), though lunch will be provided at
both events. We have allowed both organizations to merchandise our
trademark name and logo for these events, so all volunteers will receive
a jacket with the company logo on the front and the Main Street Gala on
the back. Marathon volunteers will receive a T-shirt with the Heart Matters Marathon logo on
the front. Any staff member can volunteer for one or both events.

Please contact Mary Lou in Human Resources if you are interested in

volunteering your time. The deadline is the 2nd of next month. Thanks
in advance for everyone willing to offer your free time.

Sincerely,

Magda Thomas

TRANSALTE :

Hormat saya,

Magda Thomas

Mix Business and Pleasure

Are you going to Paris on business? Take your family with you for a vacation.
Jeff Parker, an IT manager from London, his wife Julie, and their three young
children stayed at Paris Disney Resort last time he visited France on business.

Each morning Jeff took a high-speed train into central Paris and Julie enjoyed
the attractions at Disney and Walt Disney Studios with the children. In the
evenings, they met at the hotel for dinner. "We're so happy to see Jeff while
he's here on business," said Julie. "The great thing about Paris Disney is that
it's so convenient for both of us."

"It's tourist heaven," said Jeff. "Good hotels, movie theaters, restaurants,
souvenir shops, and it's easy to go to Paris. The kids loved the attractions and
we loved the French cuisine. I hope to take my family next time I come here
on business!"

PractiCE
A. genius or idiot
We often celebrate people for being intelligent or brilliant in certain areas, such as
Albert Einstein, the scientific genius. But we don't often reward people for being
really unintelligent. Since the mid-1990s however, a website called the Darwin
Awards has told true stories about the silly things people do.
For example, there is the story of a nineteen-year-old fool in Ohio in the United
States. He put his head in front of a train to see how close he could get to the
moving train before it hit him. Then there was the story of a stupid criminal from
Connecticut. He tried to escape from the police by driving into the local prison,
which he thought was a shopping mall.
Another criminal who wasn't very clever was the Frenchman who robbed two
American Olympic runners at Seville Airport in Spain. Larry Wade and Maurice
Green, two of the fastest men on Earth, ran after the Frenchman and quickly
caught the foolish thief. The Frenchman said he was an innocent tourist, but a
Spanish television crew had filmed everything and quickly called the police.

The Frenchman said he was an innocent tourist, but a
Spanish television crew had filmed everything and quickly called the police.

tertentu, seperti Albert Einstein, jenius ilmiah. Tetapi kita tidak sering menghargai
orang karena benar-benar tidak cerdas. Namun, sejak pertengahan tahun 1990-an,

The problems of being a child genius

Having a child who is very clever could be much more difficult for the parents than
a child who is unintelligent, according to scientists. Dr. Peter Congdon from the
Gifted Children's Information Center has seen many children with brilliant minds
and believes that it is not easy for these children to have normal lives.

One famous story was of a girl in England in the early 1980s called Ruth
Lawrence. She was such a genius that she went to Oxford University when she
was 12 years old! It was almost impossible for her to have a normal life because
she was so intelligent that most other people felt stupid or foolish when they were
with her.

So how do you know if your child is a genius? Dr. Congdon says that there are
ways to recognize if your child is very smart. First, the child could be
super-intelligent if he or she asks a lot of questions and has a very good memory.
Also, the child could be above average if he or she likes solving problems. Very
clever children also get bored at school, which was the same problem Albert
Einstein had when he was a child.

PRACTICE
With greater globalization, the ability to not only tolerate but also to manage diversity
in the workplace becomes very important. Businesses and organizations have clients
and customers from all over the world, and their employees are increasingly
reflecting a similar diversity. Effective managers must learn to foster a productive
multicultural atmosphere in the workplace.

The advantages of a diverse workplace are many. One of the most important
benefits is that a diverse workforce will more closely resemble the organization's
client base. Customers will be more attracted to a company that understands their
issues. A heterogeneous workforce will be more likely to bring multiple perspectives
to problem-solving, whereas a homogenous workforce may be more limited. Diverse
workplaces must hone communication skills to bring different people together as a
team. In today's world, soft skills like communication are vital to a company's health.
Companies with experience in managing diversity tend to be more flexible and
adaptable to changing environments. A diverse workforce will also attract employees
from a variety of backgrounds.

There are potential difficulties that may arise as a company moves towards a more
heterogeneous staff. Current employees may react to the new diversity with jokes or
negative remarks. Companies may believe they are satisfying the goal of greater
diversity by hiring a few token members of a particular group. When an organization
practices tokenism, it is unlikely to realize the benefits of diversity. Employees and
customers will recognize that the diversity is not genuine. Tokenism also puts a lot of
pressure on the few representatives of a group. They will be less happy and less
productive.

Good management of diversity means training employees on the advantages of

diversity, good communication skills, and effective problem-solving. It means
watching out for negative reactions to greater diversity and responding quickly.
When managed well, diversity can bring rewards to the organization, and also to the
individual employees.

TEST

Dear Career Doctor,

When I was first hired by my company, I was really excited. It was the perfect
job for me, and I was going to have a lot of responsibility. Unfortunately, it
hasn't worked out as well as I hoped. The company told me they had a diverse
workforce, but that wasn't true. As a member of a minority group, I am one of a
few token minority employees. I am in a high visibility position, and when the
company meets with minority clients, I am always included. This makes me
unhappy because I feel like I'm telling a lie. Also, some of my coworkers seem
unhappy with my hiring. They were a fairly homogenous group and some of
them have made jokes or comments about my background. Now, I am thinking
about quitting. What should I do?

Tom Token

Dear Tom Token,

It sounds like your new company is making some common mistakes. When
companies decide to make their workforce more heterogeneous, they don't
always plan as well as they should. Tokenism is not diversity. As your
experience shows, it can create bad feelings in everyone. The first thing you
should do is share your feelings and experience with someone who can help. If
you communicate well with your supervisor, you could talk to him or her.
Another good resource is the human resources department. Find out if there
are plans to hire more minorities. Describe your experience so far.
Management or Human Resources can arrange for training in communication
and problem-solving.

On the positive side, your company has made a decision to increase diversity.
The company probably wants to build and/or maintain relationships with
minority customers. This provides a powerful incentive to get this right. I think
you should give your employers the opportunity to correct their mistakes. If
they don't respond effectively, then you should begin looking for another job.

Apa yang harus saya lakukan?

Tom Token

Tom Token yang terhormat,

Kedengarannya seperti perusahaan baru Anda membuat beberapa kesalahan

umum.

lain.

1. You said: is being transferred

The correct answer is is being transferred. The present continuous passive

this is referring to a temporary, ongoing activity that is happening now.
2. You said: are paid
The correct answer is are paid. The present simple passive verb-form is correct
because the emphasis of the sentence is on the "wages" that employees get. The
key words are "Average wages in Sao Paolo are," so this is referring to a permanent
fact, not a temporary ongoing activity.
3. You said: are losing
The correct answer is are losing. The present continuous active verb-form is

are "2,000 employees…their jobs…because of the move," so this is referring to a
temporary, ongoing activity that is happening now.
4. You said: are being offered
The correct answer is are being offered. The present continuous passive
verb-form is correct because the emphasis of the sentence is on "500." This refers to
the number of people and who is offering the jobs is not mentioned. The offer is

5. You said: is struggled

past situation, not a present situation.
7. You said: were being produced
The correct answer is were being produced. The past continuous passive
verb-form is correct because the emphasis of the sentence is on the "cars," and not
who was producing the cars. The key words are "In the last six-month period," so this
is referring to a past situation, not a present situation.
8. You said: is are predicting
The correct answer is are predicting. The present continuous active verb-form is
correct because the emphasis of the sentence is on the "Managers" — they are
making predictions. The key words are "the new factory," so this is referring to a
present situation, not a past situation.
9. You said: is being cleared
The correct answer is is being cleared The present continuous passive verb-form
is correct because the emphasis of the sentence is on the changes that are

closed its gates two weeks ago, but already," so this is referring to a present
situation.
10. You said: is was made
The correct answer is was made. The past simple passive verb-form is correct
because the emphasis of the sentence is on "The prestigious XZ model," and not the

spreading information or stories by telling other people, who then tell other people.
5. Fifty-one percent of customers don't go back to a company again if they
have had a bad experience with them.
You said: False
The correct answer is False. The woman says, "Fifty-one percent of consumers who

TEST
A.
1. What does she say about complaining in restaurants?
You said: She feels more confident about doing it now than she did in the past.
The correct answer is She feels more confident about doing it now than she did in
the past. The woman says, "I never used to complain in restaurants. I didn't feel
comfortable doing it, but over the years, I've become more assertive, so now if I'm
unhappy with the food or the service, I always say something." She used to feel
uncomfortable complaining in restaurants, but she is more assertive and confident
about doing it now. She doesn't complain every time she goes to a restaurant, just if
she is unhappy with something.
2. Why does she wait until she is paying the check to complain?
You said: Because she is worried the waiter might do something bad to her
food.
The correct answer is Because she is worried the waiter might do something bad to
her food. The woman says, "You have to be careful about complaining to somebody
who is going to touch your food though — they could do something awful to it! — so I
don't usually complain until I'm paying the check." She is worried that if she
complains before or during her meal, the waiter may do something bad to her food.
3. What problem did she have at the Italian restaurant?
You said: is There was a fragment of shell in her food
The correct answer is There was a fragment of shell in her food. The woman says,
"...halfway through a pasta dish in an Italian restaurant I found a piece of shell in it,
from a mussel or something...I could easily have broken my tooth on it." There was a
piece of shell in her pasta, perhaps a fragment of mussel shell. She only says she
could have broken her tooth on it, not that she did.
4. What happened as a result of this problem?
You said: The manager let her have the meal half price
The correct answer is The manager let her have the meal half price. The woman
says, "As I was leaving, I quietly told the manager about it and he gave me a 50
percent discount just like that. Perfect resolution!" The manager cut the cost of the
meal by 50 percent, or half.

B.
1. What happened to the person who was coming to fix her dishwasher?
You said: He didn't come
The correct answer is He didn't come. The woman says, "My dishwasher broke the
other day and the company said they'd send someone to fix it between 9 and 2, so I
waited around all day but by 3:30 no one had showed up." The person didn't come
between 9 and 2 as arranged.
2. What happened on the phone?
You said: She spoke to lots of people, but no one solved the problem.
The correct answer is She spoke to lots of people, but no one solved the problem.
The woman says, "So I called them and the person who answered said, 'OK, well, I
can't really help you. Let me transfer you to somebody else,' and I was transferred
from person to person, telling the same story over and over but without anyone
actually taking action." She was passed from person to person and had to say what
her problem was many times, but no one took action and solved the problem. They
did put her on hold for 10 minutes at one point, but she did get to speak to people.
3. How did she behave on the phone?
You said: Calm at first, then angry
The correct answer is Calm at first, then angry. The woman says, "I tried to keep
cool but after they put me on hold for 10 minutes, I went crazy." She kept cool or
calm for the first part of the call, but then got crazy or angry later, after they had put
her on hold for 10 minutes.

C.
1. When was the woman's meeting?
You said: The day after the flight she had booked
The correct answer is The day after the flight she had booked. The woman says,
"The woman at the check-in counter told me my flight had been cancelled...I told
them I had to be in Milan that night for a meeting the next day." Her meeting was the
next day, the day after the flight she had booked (which was cancelled).
2. What did the woman at the check-in counter tell her?
You said: She would not be able to fly until the next day.
The correct answer is She would not be able to fly until the next day. The woman
says, "The woman at the check-in counter told me my flight had been cancelled...and
they would put me on their first flight the next morning instead." The woman told her
that her flight was completely cancelled and she would not be able to fly until the
next morning.
3. Why did she finally get to fly on the day she wanted?
You said: Because she kept complaining until she got what she wanted.
The correct answer is Because she kept complaining until she got what she wanted.
The woman says, "I wasn't happy, believe you me. I told them I flew with them
regularly and had spent thousands and thousands of dollars on flights with their
company, and finally one of the managers said that as a last resort, they could put
me on a flight with another airline. Just goes to show what you can get if you stand
your ground." By standing her ground and not giving up, she got them to arrange a
flight for her with another airline.

on products like hats, mugs, pens, jackets, backpacks, etc."
4. Which two examples of PR events does the article mention?

5. What is one benefit of a PR event according to the article?
You said: PR events help a company target specific markets.
The correct answer is PR events help a company target specific markets. The

service on a very specific market…"
Being successful in business takes much more than just a good product or service.
With more and more competition for consumers' business, companies want to
maximize every advertising dollar they spend. But while many companies focus
mainly on TV commercials, there are other ways of creating a brand image without
spending huge amounts of money on TV ads.

First, companies should choose their logo very carefully. A logo should be simple
both in design and color. It should also represent the "spirit" of the company. For
example, airlines like logos that are both solid and full of open space, representing
security, motion, and the open sky. Banks often use bulky and wide logos that give
the impression of stability. A logo will represent the company not only in advertising
but in countless other ways: on its letterhead, its website, its employee business
cards, etc. But more than this, when companies merchandise their logo, they release
it so that it can be used on products like hats, mugs, pens, jackets, backpacks, etc.
These products can be sold or given out as gifts. These products, often produced
cheaply, are then given to customers who give the company even more exposure.

Another alternative to expensive TV advertising can be accomplished by sponsoring

big PR events. For example, by spending $10,000 and setting up a scholarship for
poor university students, a company can host a banquet to give the scholarship
money away, introducing hundreds, if not thousands, of new people to its products.
Other companies prefer to host public events like film festivals. The company gives
money to the organizers of the festival and, in exchange, gets to advertise in printed
programs and signage, as well as before or after the films play in the theater. These
kinds of events also help a company focus their products or service on a very
specific market, unlike TV ads which generally appeal to a wider, less defined market
of consumers.

pena, jaket, ransel, dll.

TEST

Dear Staff:

As you all know, our company is sponsoring two exciting PR events this summer.
The first is the Main Street Art Gala,
and we will be hosting a table there in order to attract new customers.

We have allowed both organizations to merchandise our
trademark name and logo for these events, so all volunteers will receive
a jacket with the company logo on the front and the Main Street Gala on
the back. Marathon volunteers will receive a T-shirt with the Heart Matters Marathon
logo on the front. Any staff member can volunteer for one or both events.

Please contact Mary Lou in Human Resources if you are interested in

volunteering your time. The deadline is the 2nd of next month. Thanks
in advance for everyone willing to offer your free time.

Sincerely,

Magda Thomas

menjadi sukarelawan waktu Anda.
luang Anda.

Hormat saya,

Magda Thomas
