GATES COUNTY
ABOUT
Established in 1779 out of Chowan, Hertford, and Perquimans American Civil War. However, the county
counties, Gates County was named for Revolutionary War hero was also the first in the state to summon a
General Horatio Gates. Gatesville serves as the county seat. military company to aid the Confederates after North MARTIN

Other communities located in Gates County include Hall, Haslett, Carolina seceded from the Union.

Gates County is known for its religious history, including Middle Gates County Courthouse, the Great Dismal Swamp Canal,
Swamp Baptist Church and Savage's United Methodist Church – Merchants Millpond State Park — which is famous for its cypress
two churches that preached to integrated congregations until the trees — and Reid’s Grove School, a historic Rosenwald school.
