The new attempt will take
place on the notoriously
bumpy Grand National
roller-coaster. Participants

bathrobe, flip-flops or tennis
shoes, a towel to sit on and a
bag for their clothes. The
record attempt will be fol-
lowed by a "skinny dip"
event at the Sandcastle
Waterpark, which will allow
people to ride the water
slides in the buff for three

Finally, as I am putting
this together, I am watching
the testimony of Michael
Cohen. IMHO, pretty damn-
ing to some people but total

The other night Atticus and I
were left to our own devices
with little to do. So after sup-
per we shared the couch and
I did something I seldom do
and picked up the remote
and turned on the television.
There's a good reason I
rarely do this and that's
because out of hundreds of
channels I rarely find some-
thing I enjoy. I skipped
around and Atticus being

species covered his eyes

Washington Hillclimb is one
of North America’s oldest
motorsports events, first run
in July 1904, seven years
before the first 500-mile race
at Indianapolis Motor
Speedway and twelve years
prior to the inaugural Pikes
Peak Hillclimb in Colorado.
The Climb to the Clouds was
run sporadically from 1904-
1961, then not again until
1990 when it was run consis-
tently until 2001. Following
a ten-year hiatus, the Mt.
Washington Hillclimb
returned in 2011 as part of
the 150th anniversary cele-
bration of the Mt.
Washington Auto Road
which first opened on
August 8, 1861. Since the
2011 event, the Hillclimb
has taken place in 2014 as
well as 2017. The 2020 Mt.
Washington Hillclimb will
celebrate 30 very active
years of growth and popular-
ity since it was brought back
in 1990.

changes to marble.
Coral sounds tropical. This
was a warm sea?
Yes. Back then, proto–North
America was in the southern
hemisphere.
This was back in the
dinosaur age?
No. This was about 300 mil-
lion years before the big
charismatic dinosaurs. The
only life on earth was in the
ocean, and even then, it was
modest life. Animals were
just forming shells and
exoskeletons.
So how did a chunk of sea
floor get pushed up on land?
Around 500 million years
ago, the plate under proto–
North America moved east,
and the crust under the ocean
was subducted under the
adjacent plate. The resulting
volcanic activity produced a
chain of islands, which ran
from what is today Alabama
all the way up to
Newfoundland. Then, proto–
North America smashed into
the arc and fused with it,
which formed much taller
mountains. Geologists call
this the Taconic orogeny –
it’s how the Taconic
Mountains were born.
The way you described that
makes it seem like the East
Coast should be just east of
the Taconics. Where did east-
ern New England come
from?
There was a chunk of conti-
nent that had broken off of
proto–Africa and was drift-
ing around in the Iapetus
Ocean. Geologists call it
Avalonia. After the Taconic
orogeny, Avalonia collided
and then fused with the
island arc, creating the White
Mountains in New
Hampshire. Some of the land
to the east of the Whites is
sediment that was pushed up
during the collision. Some of
coastal New England is
actually part of Avalonia.
So this was before the super-
continent Pangaea?
Well before. It took another
100 million years of conti-
nental drift before proto–
Africa and proto–Europe
collided with proto–North
America to form Pangaea.
At that point, the Iapetus
Ocean disappeared. When
Pangaea broke apart, parts
of Avalonia drifted away
with Europe.
Wild. But getting back to
this rock – how did it get
here, to this exact spot, lay-
ing randomly on the forest
floor with no other big rocks
around it?
The rock was originally part
of the bedrock, but the
Laurentide Ice Sheet moved
it and deposited it where it
sits. For about 70,000 years
– and as recently as 15,000
years ago – this area was
covered in a blanket of ice
up to two miles thick. The
ice moved from north to
south, grinding the land-
scape in the process. This
stone might have moved
feet, or miles, or hundreds of
miles.

Can you tell how far it
moved?
Not exactly, but it likely
wasn’t far. For one, it match-
es the bedrock in the region.
Also, it’s not scoured and
rounded. The glacier was
something of a big rock
tumbler, so when stones
moved a long way, they
have smooth edges to reflect
it.

The Fireflies of

Like most people, I thought I
knew where to find fireflies:
in back yards and fields on
summer nights, flickering on
and off like dollhouse-sized
lanterns or like Tinkerbell,
the tiny fairy that the author
of Peter Pan invented while
observing fireflies near a
Scottish lake.
I was only partly right. There
are about 2,000 firefly
species, but not all are noc-
turnal. Nor are they all flashy
– some don’t light up at all.
Furthermore, we don’t have
to wait for summer to see
one.
Meet Ellychnia corrusca,
known as the winter dark, or
diurnal, firefly.
Although common, this
insect is easily overlooked.
The adult is dark brown or
black – about a half inch in
length – and has a pair of
curved orange markings on
the shield covering its head,
resembling parentheses. It’s
one of the first insects to
appear in spring, becoming
active as early as late
February.
When I first heard of winter
dark fireflies, I was
intrigued. I was disappointed
to learn that they are lantern-
less – but then, I had no idea
how vast and diverse the fire-
fly world was. It was late
fall, so I had to wait months
before going out hunting. On
February 17, I got up close
and personal with a big sugar
maple, not expecting to find
my quarry on the first try.

trunk just above the snow-
line, I immediately spotted a
small beetle with orange

moving slowly about

The winter dark firefly is a
contradictory creature,
indeed. Common names can
be misleading (the dogtooth
violet and mountain ash, for
example, are members of the
lily family and the rose fam-
ily, respectively); the word
firefly is another case in
point. Fireflies are not flies.
They are soft-bodied, winged
beetles, a family of insects in
the order Coleoptera.
Unlike most of their rela-
tives, winter dark fireflies
overwinter as adults. When
the days are noticeably
longer and daytime tempera-
tures rise, they begin to
climb upward on the deeply
grooved bark of trees where
they have rested all winter,
existing on stored energy
reserves. They hang out in
ridges and fissures in tree
bark, or cluster around sap
flows. Maple sugar produc-
ers who still use buckets find
them floating on the surface
of the sap, leading to another
common (and less confus-
ing) name: the sap bucket
beetle.
As the weather warms and
they don’t need to stay on the
sunny sides of tree trunks,
winter fireflies are often seen
flying slowly along in the
understory. Mating takes
place in the grooves of tree
bark from early April
through mid-May, and eggs
hatch in about 16 days.
According to Tufts
University professor and
firefly expert Sara Lewis, the
larvae spend the next 16
months eating, growing, and,
well … glowing. This is the
one time in a winter firefly’s
life that it almost lives up to
its name. While adults lack
light-producing organs, the
larvae are capable of biolu-
minescence.
During the summer months,
winter fireflies are largely
absent: adults of the previous
season have died off, and lar-
vae of the next generation are
hidden in leaf litter and rot-
ting tree trunks.

risen about diminishing
numbers of fireflies in many
parts of the world, possibly
due to habitat loss, light pol-
lution, agricultural practices,
pesticides, and until recently,
bounty hunting. (Millions
were killed annually and
shipped to chemical compa-
nies, who extracted
luciferase, their light-produc-
ing enzyme.) The scientific
community is currently col-
lecting population data, as
well as studying firefly diets,
flash patterns, and other
characteristics. One way to
help is through citizen sci-
ence projects, such as

Finding my first winter fire-
fly was a reminder that I am
aware of only a tiny percent-
age of the infinite number of
creatures that surround me.
They may not have a delight-
ful song or pretty feathers,
but winter dark fireflies are
harbingers of spring in the

did a lot of research about

little bit about world history.
It is true. A few interesting
facts that I found where, The
first legal slave owner in
American history was a
black tobacco farmer named
Anthony Johnson., North
Carolina’s largest slave
holder in 1860 was a black
plantation owner named
William Ellison. And in
1830 there were 3,775 free
black people who owned
12,740 black slaves. Though
their where 2 million black
slaves in the country and out
of the 12,740 owned by
black owners, some where
the ownership of family
members.

that shocked me. Blacks and
Indians own, and abuse,
whites in Virginia in such
large numbers that in 1670

student-centered funding

Foundation for Excellence in
Education study, “Student-
Centered Funding in New
Hampshire” (linked here),
worked with in-state funding
experts and found that out of
$16,940 in average funding
per student across the
Granite State, only 25 per-
cent is student-centered. This
means that when a student
moves to a different district,
only 25 percent of funding
follows them to the new dis-
trict.
Similarly, when a student
dent-centered, the state fails
to reap the benefits, includ-
ing transparency, empower-
ment of parents and district
and school leaders, and fair-
ness. High-performing dis-
tricts and public charter
schools also have little
incentive to grow.
“As New Hampshire con-
tinues to debate how best to
provide funding to schools
across the state, the needs of
students must be at the fore-
front of the discussion,” said
Gov. Chris Sununu. “This
study is a valuable contribu-
tion to the current discus-
sion, since a student-cen-
tered funding formula –
where spending follows the
child – promotes fairness,
transparency, flexibility and
innovation across our state.”

Grief Study tests two evi-
dence based online/app pro-
grams created by scientists
and clinicians at Uniformed
Services University and
Columbia University to
address grief-related chal-
lenges. These programs were
developed in response to ear-
lier research suggesting that
grief-related challenges can
occur among bereaved mili-
tary survivors, even many
years following a loss, and
that many surviving loved
ones desire additional sup-
port.
The study is NOW open to
close friends and family
members of those who died
before or after September 11,
2001 while serving in the
military or as a result of their
military service. For
instance, this would include:
Any immediate family mem-
ber - such as a parent,
spouse, sibling or adult child
Any non-immediate family
member - such as a cousin,
grandparent, uncle, or aunt
Any close friend or battle
buddy of an active duty serv-
ice member who died while
serving
Participants will be random-
ly assigned to one of these
WellnessSteps, in order to
test their ability to support
grief adaptation in bereaved
military survivors. The study
team is particularly hoping to
reach and enroll bereaved
family members who contin-
ue to struggle with their
grief. It is our hope that the
results of the study will lead
to better resources for the
bereaved in years to come.

2019) – As a child growing
up in southern New
Hampshire, Amanda Marin
lived in awe of local literary
history—from Robert Frost
to J.D. Salinger and beyond.
When writing her debut
novel, North to Nara, it
seemed only fitting, there-
fore, for her to include a nod
to the Granite State.
While most of the action of
North to Nara, a young adult
dystopian romance novel,
takes place in a futuristic ver-
sion of Washington, D.C.,
Marin said she could not
resist adding a scene toward
the end in which her star-
crossed lovers travel through
northern New Hampshire
while fleeing to a reimagined
version of Canada, where
they can be together.
“I always love coming across

books or movies. Even after
living here for more than 30
years, it still gives me a
thrill,” said Marin.
In the scene, Marin includes
references to the White
Mountains and local granite.
The characters even come
across an old sign with the
current state motto and pon-

“So much dystopian litera-
ture portrays decay in big
cities, and although North to
Nara includes some of that, I
thought it would also be fun
to look at how things might
change in a more rural loca-
tion,” Marin said.
North to Nara was loosely
inspired by the work of
another New Englander—
Nathaniel Hawthorne, who
passed away in New
Hampshire. Marin said she
wanted to give The Scarlett
Letter’s Hester Prynne and
Arthur Dimmesdale the
happy ending they never
achieved in Hawthorne’s
original.
“North to Nara isn’t neces-
sarily a retelling, but rather a
futuristic reimagining of the
story, focused on Hester- and
Arthur-equivalent charac-
ters,” said Marin.
Marin’s novel centers on a
teenage girl, Neve Hall, who
falls in love with the one per-
son forbidden to her by law:

technology. When their affair
is discovered, both are
marked traitors to their coun-
