One artist residency of at
least three weeks will be
offered between mid-July
and September. The artist
will be provided accommo-
dations on or near the forest,
as well as a $2000.00
stipend. Friends of Mead
Base have provided housing
to several artists in the past.
Public programs may
include demonstrations,
exploratory walks or hikes,
performances, interactive or
participatory installations,
group creative projects, or
other programs based on the
medium, interest and experi-
ence of the artist.

with the local community

Johnny Chan, 34, was
charged with 71 counts of
invasion of privacy, includ-
ing one involving a minor,
after allegedly planting a
hidden camera in an employ-
ee restroom in a laboratory.
The organization fired him.
While out on bail, Chan was
arrested again on 27 more
counts after investigators say
Chan also used a camera on
his shoe to record “upskirt”
images of women who sat at
desks near him; his bail was
raised to $2 million. While
out on bail, Chan got a job at
a Banana Republic clothing
store. A police officer inves-
tigating the previous cases
visited the store — and
found a hidden camera in an
employee restroom. Chan,
who still lives with his par-
ents, was arrested yet again,
fired again, and faces anoth-
er 27 counts (what’s up with
27), including one involving
a minor. Chan’s bail was
raised to $4 million. When
investigators asked Chan if
he viewed commercial adult
movies, he said no —
“because that would be

own stuff – we all do – but I
can’t remember the last time
I felt as drawn and spent and
empty as many I’d seen on
the highways this week. The
reason we were driving was
because we were invited to
speak about our story at the
wondrous R. J. Julia
Booksellers in Madison,
Connecticut. It’s a beautiful
seaside town that’s polished
and scrubbed and feels
cleaner and more orderly
than most places I’ve ever
been. But it’s not so
scrubbed or polished, how-
ever, that it feels sterile. It
just feels good. And the
bookstore itself is perhaps
the most beautiful bookstore
I’ve ever been in. It was
enchanting – the kind of
place readers would love to
get lost in, or those who
dream of being a writer go to
and walk among the books
and say, “Someday… .some-
day I’d like to see my book
up on that polished wooden
shelf with all the greats, and
someday, if I’m fortunate
enough, I’d like to come here
and sign my books.” We
were to speak at night but we
showed up unannounced, as
we like to do, earlier in the
day, to take in the surround-
ings. We walked for several
minutes through the store
taking it all in and for a while
no one thought anything at
all about us. Then one
woman behind the counter
saw
Atticus sitting in my arms
and said, “Oh, have you seen
this book we’re selling? The
dog on the cover looks just
like him,” as she pointed at
Atticus. She went and got
our book and held it up for
me to see, “He looks just like
him. How cute!” That’s
when I finally introduced
ourselves and our anonymity
was gone. The staff there
was just as extraordinary as
the store itself was.
Everyone was kind. The inn
they put us up in was roman-
tic and quaint and precious.
And that night when we
spoke, there was a good
crowd awaiting us and they
were fantastic! They were
upbeat, many having read
our book and knew of the
Little Buddha and they all
smiled as we walked to the
podium and looked at
Atticus in my arm sitting up
looking out at them. And
when I spoke, they listened
intently. They nodded, they
smiled, they laughed, some
wiped a tear here and there.
When we were done we sat
and I signed books and used
Atti’s paw print stamp to
imprint his “pawtograph.”

sold so many books they
sold out and had to order
more. It was everything a
writer dreams of. That night,
after the store closed, Atticus
and I walked out into the
cold night and strolled the
streets of Madison.
Christmas decorations
adorned the downtown and
lights twinkled like little
stars and it seemed we had it
all to ourselves. It was not
unlike the trails we seek out
here in the mountains – the
ones where we can mostly be
alone. The air was clean and
filled with a sense of satis-
faction. As I walked I
thought of the high moun-
tains of the Presidential
Range where the rock reach-
es above treeline. I thought
of the times we’ve been
there, especially in winter. I
thought of the winter when
Atticus led me over those
high peaks when he was
mostly blind and the follow-
ing winter when he did it
again with restored sight. I
thought of the other times
we’ve been up there, espe-
cially when we had it to our-
selves and all we carry is our
thoughts, what’s on our bod-
ies, and what’s in my back-
pack. And I thought of being
there on top of New England
to watch the sunrise, as we
plan to do one upcoming
winter morning. It’s funny,
when we are away from
home I often think of these
mountains, but in the moun-
tains I often think of other
things, especially when we
are climbing them. And that
gets back to my original

point. It’s not really about
the mountains. It’s never
been about them. Thinking
about these great peaks and
the places we’ve been when
writing about them and the
success we’ve had, I
couldn’t help but think of
someone who would have
enjoyed every bit of our jour-
ney had he lived to see it.

said little of it to me, and
would have exhibited little
pride or excitement for me to
witness. For whatever rea-
son he would have kept it
hidden. But that doesn’t
mean it wouldn’t have filled
him up and lifted him up. So

In this article I am going to
talk about some computer
problems that I receive e-
mail questions about, these
are;
I start my computer and after
about 5 minutes it shuts
down, why? This can be
caused by a couple of fac-
tors; however the most com-
mon one is overheating. Your
computer processor has a
cooling fan on top, if that fan
is not working properly; than
the computer will shut itself
down to protect the proces-
sor from overheating. Open
your computer case and
make sure the fan is working
and there is no dust or debris
in the case that would cause
it to overheat. If all is ok,
than it would be an indica-
tion the power supply on
your computer is going bad,
take it to a shop for repair.
I work on my computer and I
get this error virtual memory
low, what is that and how can
I fix it? Your computer has 3
types of memory first type is
CPU Cache, this is the mem-
ory that is built into your
computers processor, it is a
storage area where your CPU
keeps frequently used data it
makes the computer perform
faster because it dos not have
to go out to distant memory
locations to get the data, a
processor normally have 2
levels of cache, L1 and L2,
L2 cache is the memory
between the CPU and the
memory or RAM chips in the
computer. Memory chips or
RAM are removable mod-
ules you can change in your
computer, the RAM memory
is a temporary work area
inside the computer, when
you load a file from your
hard drive it goes into RAM
memory, the more memory
you have installed in your
computer the better the per-
formance. The other type of
memory is virtual memory.
When your computer does
not have enough RAM or
large enough memory chip
installed it creates a paging
file on your hard drive,

uses a portion of you com-
puters hard drive for memo-
ry. Virtual memory slows
down your computers per-
formance because your com-
puter is swapping data from
RAM Memory to your com-
puters hard drive and when
needed back to RAM. You
can change the size of your
virtual memory by going to
Start/My Computer/Control
Panel, click on
System/Advanced then per-

there you go to Advanced
and then Virtual Memory
click the Change button, I
suggest you select System
Managed Size, click Set,
then restart your computer,
Windows will then automat-
ically adjust the virtual
memory paging file and you
will not receive the virtual

time it is slow, what will
cause this? As we use our
computers some programs
install and run in the back-
ground when we turn the
computer on. A good exam-
ple is your antivirus or
instant messaging program.
You do need your antivirus
program to run when you
start your computer, but you
don’t need Yahoo or Aim to
startup with your computer.
To turn off programs you do
not need to start with your
computer go to Start/Run
then type MSCONFIG,
press ok select the Startup
tab, uncheck the programs
you do not need to start with
the computer, another mem-
ory hog is Kodak EasyShare,
I suggest turning it off along
with Yahoo and AIM, if you
wish to run the programs
after your computer has
started then click the icons
on the desktop to execute the
programs. Another free pro-
gram from Microsoft is
called Autoruns you can get
that at
http://technet.microsoft.com

px. It is basically like
MSCONFIG but on steroids.
If you run Norton Antivirus,
McAfee or any other
Antivirus Suites see if there
is an upgrade, Norton 2008

to Medway, the little town I
grew up in. There’s not
much there these days other
than a few strip malls, some
overpriced houses, and com-
muters. And there’s no rea-
son for Atticus and me to go
there other than that’s where
my parents are buried. My
mother was gone far too
early for me to remember
much of anything about her.
I was only seven when she
died Christmas week. So
when I visit the cemetery I
do it more for my father.
And there Atticus and I sat
halfway between that perfect
bookstore in Madison,
Connecticut and the moun-
tains we now love and call
home. I read him the pro-
logue to the book. It was first
written as a letter to him,
after all. Then I told him of

the wonders of the last few
days and this entire journey.
Then we sat some more and I
held Atticus on my lap and
the same cool earth that now
holds my father’s body held
me. It’s funny what happens
when you first take a step
onto a trail and head into the
woods. You really do have
no idea where it will ulti-
mately take you. But this
much I do know, it’s not
about the mountains. It has
never been about them. It’s
always been about where
they take you and who they

look out my window, I often
see a gray squirrel clinging
upside down to the post sup-
porting my bird feeder, with
his front paws in the tray,
munching sunflower seeds.
Sometimes, a much smaller
red squirrel is perched on the
opposite side of the feeder.

resident squirrels and tran-
sient squirrels, between
males competing for females
during the winter breeding
period, or during contests for
food at a bird feeder. There
was a high degree of toler-
ance and association among
gray squirrels, a finding con-
firmed by other researchers. I
often observed several squir-
rels feeding peacefully on
maple seeds or apples in the
same tree. Five squirrels
(probably a mother, her two
spring-born young, and her
two summer-born young)
shared a den cavity in a big
silver maple. Once, I saw
three of them gathering
leaves and following each
other up the tree to line their
den hole. This tree was con-
veniently located outside the
house I lived in, so I could
observe the squirrels from
my window when they
emerged at daybreak while I
sat in a comfortable chair
sipping tea.
Some researchers have
observed a dominance hier-
archy among gray squirrels
based on sex and age, though
these studies were conducted
at artificial feeders – a con-
centrated food source. I did
not discover clear evidence
of a pecking order and con-
cluded that it may only func-
tion in times of food scarcity.
I plotted my sightings of
each squirrel on a map and
discovered that the home
ranges overlapped consider-
ably, a finding consistent
with other studies. Gray
squirrels are not territorial;
they do not exclude others
from their home ranges,
though nursing females will
defend den trees.
I also recorded interactions
between gray squirrels and
red squirrels. Half of these
encounters were aggressive,
and in most of these, the
smaller red squirrel initiated
the conflict. Red squirrels
also chattered a warning
when a gray squirrel entered
the vicinity. In contrast to the
sociable gray squirrel, red
squirrels are territorial in
their preferred habitat – pure
coniferous forest – and vig-
orously defend forest patches
from other squirrels.
The difference in social
behavior between the two
species likely stems from a
difference in feeding habits.
The buds, leaves, fruit, and
seeds of deciduous trees, all
favorite foods of the gray
squirrel, are normally abun-
dant from spring through
fall, though they change as
tree species flower and fruit
at different times. The
amount of mast fluctuates
from year to year, and it’s an
advantage for gray squirrels
to be able to travel around
their home ranges to forage
without interference from
other squirrels. During win-
ter, gray squirrels usually
rely on cached nuts, which
they hide from other squir-
rels by burying them individ-
ually in scattered locations.
Red squirrels prefer the
small seeds of conifers like

spruce and fir, which they
remove by turning the cones
in their front paws and chew-
ing off the scales, much like
we eat corn on the cob. They
store large piles of cones so
the seeds will be available
year-round, and so they must
defend this larder and the
trees they harvest the cones
from.
Of course feeding habits and
social behavior can change
when humans tip the scales,
which brings us back to the
gray and red squirrels feed-
ing within a foot of each
other at my feeder, some-
thing not usually seen in
nature.

1946, the third son of

Newberry, and grew up on
their dairy farm in
Mechanicsburg, VA.
He graduated from Bland
High School in 1964 and
worked briefly on the con-
struction of I-77 in Bland
County, VA.
He enlisted in the Army in
October of 1966 and served
as an Operating Room
Specialist and Surgical
Technician during the
Vietnam War.
After being discharged
from the Army in 1969, Jim

den fence around it proved
an inadequate barrier, as she
simply hopped over it to

sits an old orchard, and we’d
also spot her there, scratch-
ing with sharp hooves to get
to the long-frozen, shriveled
