The figure above was graphed using QM Solver for Windows. It shows the graph of
the feasible region of the production bounded by the number of hours of the grinders and
polishers.

A certain manufacturer produces two types of models categorized as M1 and M2. He

aims to maximize his profit by determining the amount of working hours of polishers and
grinders needed to both models. Using the number of hours of the polishers and grinders
available, he determined his maximum profit valued at $147.50.

Case 1: Reduced Resources

M2 32 165 <= 165
2.5 >= 0
32 >= 0

In real life situations, there will come a time where an equipment will reach its design
life span and lessens its efficiency. Take for example this case, where the value of the right
hand side of the equations were varied accordingly based on the initial sensitivity report. In
this case, it was assumed that the grinders will soon reach its life span and will reduce it number
of working hours into 37 hours while the polisher is limited only to 55 hours. It can be observed
that the decrease in the values of the constant were within the range of allowable increase and
decrease in the constraints. According to the new sensitivity report, the manufacture still can
gain an optimum profit (final values obtained are covered within the feasible region) while
producing 2.5 new M1 and 32 new M2. It can be inferred therefore that when there is a shift in
the amount of resources available, the company can still earn a great profit for as long as the
resources are within the range specified in the sensitivity report.

Case 2: Surplus of Resources

Objective
Function Variables Constraints Inequality Constant
182.5 M1 27.5 160 <= 160
M2 25 180 <= 180
27.5 >= 0
25 >= 0

Final Reduced Objective Allowable Allowable

Cell Name Value Cost Coefficient Increase Decrease
$C$2 M1 27.5 0 3 5 1.4
$C$3 M2 25 0 4 3.5 2.5

Final Shadow Constraint Allowable Allowable

Cell Name Value Price R.H. Side Increase Decrease
$D$2 Constraints 160 0.4375 160 200 88
$D$3 Constraints 180 0.625 180 220 100
$D$4 Constraints 27.5 0 0 27.5 1E+30
$D$5 Constraints 25 0 0 25 1E+30
In this case, the manufacturer aims to increase its production by adding two grinders.
In this instance, the right hand side of the initial constraints was increased up to 160 hours. Due
to this change, it can be observed that maximum profit reached was $182.5. However, it can
also be observed that the values for M1 and M2 were not covered in the feasible region. It can
be observed that there is an excess profit if two grinders were added. This excess profit may be
used as an incentive for the laborers or the stockholders.
