We are the student of the Senior High School of San Vicente National High School, Panabo City.
As part of our requirements in grade 11 schooling, We are conducting a research under the
supervision of our PR1 teacher, (pen sound) Dr. Elden D. Orbeta. We are pleased to invite you to
be part of our study. The purpose of our dissertation is to investigate the challenges of ICT
students of San Vicente in dealing with their academic subjects.

This study uses purposive sampling strategy that will use to select “information rich” key
informants for the in-depth interviews. The main instrument to be used in the data collection is the
researcher-made interview sheet. The interview sheet, audio or video recording will be used to
collect qualitative data of challenges in learning academic subjects through the lens of ICT
students. This will take thirty to forty-five minutes only for this activity.

Your participation is completely voluntary. You may withdraw from this study at any time without
any cost.

All information gathered in this undertaking will be kept firmly confidential. All participants will
be asked not to disclose anything said within the context of discussion. All identifying data will be
removed from the collected materials, and all materials will be stored securely.

Nico: Okay so let's proceed to our interview.

Velly: Okay so the title of our study is Challenges of Learning Academic Subjects
through the Lens of ICT Students so the purpose is to identify the factors that
contribute to the poor academic performance of senior high school student
particularly students from ICT department. Identifying the factors can help educator
addressed not only the performance issues but lowering the number of failed grades of
their academic subjects. So we are the researcher so next ahm... let's proceed to the
questions. So first is, what are the primary factors related to the challenges that can
affect in learning academic subjects?

KII8: For me, base on my experiences, the factors that affects, the aca... demic
performance of the students perhaps the... perhaps their perception kanang ilahang
wala pas jud silay learning about unsa jux ilahang... unsa jud... wala pa silay
knowledge or background na kanang knowledge unsa gyuy mahitabo in the near
future as they proceed to senior high school kasi diba senior high school ahm
perception sa mga estudyante kay okay it's a preparation for college na then wala pa
gyud nila na-experience jud, wala pa jud nila naklaro unsa gyuy mahitabo on that year
on that near future sa ilahang kuan.

Velly: So ahm can you give some or other factors that related your learning? Or
related... to cha... to your factors that related to the challenges of your... of you as a
student for...

KII8: Ako, in my case right now, ang factor is sa subject na animation, I'm not that
good in drawing and isa siya sa struggle nako kasi dili ko kabalo mo-drawing and but
I have to kana gung ma-force ko mag-drawing for the grades para naa koy... para
akong grades is dapat modako siya ana gud so kana siya sa akoa, lisod kaayo na sa
akoa na part kana siya ang animation na subject since dili jud nako passion but since
related siya sa ICT and isa siya sa major course so I have to pursue, I have to do unsay
ipabuhat sa akoa sa akoang teacher.

Velly: Okay so thank you, is there an, ahm... any other factors that can affect your
learning in academic subject?

KII8: So far wala, mao lang gyud to kasi when it comes sa research okay naman siya
kato lang gyud ang animation lang gyud akong struggle ang isa sa struggle nako na
naka-affect jud sa akoang academic performance right now.

Velly: Hmm.

KII8: Kasi nibaba gyud akong grades sa animation karon na grading kay akong mga...
akong mga outputs, dili gyud siya ing-ana gud dw kanindot kaya ningbaba gyud siya.

Velly: Okay so thank you so ahm how about the... In your grade 11 level ahm is there
any... Is there any factors that can affect your learning in ICT?

KII8: Before... In terms in academic subjects?

Velly: Yes.

KII8: Before is ang cguro ang research kasi that time is wala mi kabalo it's our first
time to do to conduct research that time and wala miy knowledge pa ana since gahi
ay... Since junior high school wala mi gutudluan. Though kabalo mi na naa daw
research pero wala jud miy backround knowledge unsa jud nang research unaon siya
pagsugod, unsaon then... Tha... That time gipabuhat lang mi na... Gipabuhat mig
concept paper na wala mi kabalo unsaon man ni so kato na time struggle kaayo siya
for me and for us na sa amoang level kay wala pa gyud mi kabalo pa gyud, wala pa
miy experience before though mag-research mi pero lahi mn gyud nang gitudlo gyud
sa imoha, step by step unsay buhaton nimo but karon okay naman kay naka-
experience naman mi before.

Velly: Ah okay so those are the factors like first is the... The animation and... And
about sa research and the fa... In your past year so next so... What do you know about
senior high school and what are your expectations on it?

KII8: First is when... I started to enroll senior high school, I knew that it is the per... It
is the stage where it prepares you for college your higher education na kani na na
senior high school is mag-take ka ani that will mode you to a better person to be a
better individual kasi sa senior high school naa na diha ang mga subjects na dli lng
siya, it's not talk about academics but then sa imoha, developing you as a human
being okay mao to siya. And my expectations before I knew na pag after when I
graduated at senior high school, I knew na I will be prepared enough to face
challenges na when I go to college since ang mga knowledge na akong na-acquire in a
four corner of classroom is enough na siya para ma... Para maka-proceed ko para ang
mga learnings na ma-acquire pa nako in the near Future is dali ra sa akoa ma-adopt.

Velly: Ah okay so thank you and ah why do you choose ICT as your track in your... In
senior highschool in the first place?

KII8: Okay why choose honestly ang ICT is dili gyud siya akoang first choice option
nako siya number 2 kasi I want kanang first choice jud nako is mag-HUMSS ko but
then wala may HUMSS diri sa San Vicente so then dili pud ko gusto mag-GAS kasi
I'm aiming for... Kanang NC2 gusto ko maka-receive og certificate para if dili ko
maka-proceed og college at least naa oy kanang... Naa koy nagunitan na kaning
certificate nako which is the national certificate to so kato. And aside from that is
passion man pud nako gusto man pud nako magkuri-kuri og computer ana and then
kanang I know kasi pag ICT ka is aside sa learnings na makuna nimo since skills man
siya pwede gyud nimo siya magamit na while nagskwela ka or while naa lang ka sa
inyong balay pwede gyud siya magamit and at the same time makakwarta pa ka so
mao na siya ang purpose nganong nagkuan ko aside from passion nako but kana pung
thinking of earning income.

Velly: Ah okay so thank you so ahm next is in terms of academic subjects in senior
high school ahm what can you say about it?

KII8: Okay so in terms of academic subjects, it's quite goo... Ay good gyud siya
kanang it is better na kita subject jud to nato siya but some... Kanang it is somehow
lisod gyud siya since first time jud nato siya ma-ma-experience ang uban when...
When we are junior high school english, math, science, filipino lang siya but karon is
mas something nag-upgrade gyud siya ang mga subjects nato so okay gyud siya at
least kanang naa tay mga experiences na ana kanang ang mga learnings ba kana gung
mas higher na compared sa junior high school nato. Though lisod siya but at least
kanang ginatudluan ta kana gung naa gihapon ang mga... Naa gihapon ang kana gung
orientation sa atoa naa gihapon ang discussion sa ato. And ang nakanindot lang pud
karon is kanang dil... Ang teachers let the Student na sila gyud ang makako... Sila
gyud ang maka-discover na dili gyud kanang like... Dili gyud kanang i-spoon feed sa
imoha dili ipakaon tanan sa imoha kanang ikaw gyud ang mag-discover mao nay
nakanindot kanang ginatudluan ka how to be depen... Independent enough.

Velly: Okay so thank you for that ah so next ahm what are your insights in dealing
with your challenges involving your learnings in academic subjects?

KII8: So what are my insights... It's somehow... it's how if you are the student na dili
kaya mo-handle kato na mga subjects it somehow kanang affects your academic
performances and even you as a person if dili gyud ka ing-ana ka strong no but if you
are a strong kanang individual na though gamay imohang... Though lisod ang mga
subjects but then kana gung imong mind is kaya... Kayanon nako ni so okay lang siya
kaya i-mind set nimo, ang goal gyud nimo dapat in-ani at the end of that semester at
the end of the day dapat dako ang grades so maningkamot gyud ka, ma-pressure gyud
ka honestly sa kalisod sa mga subjects.

Velly: Okay so ahm thank you so... Do these difficulties affect your performance in
academic subjects? Do these affect you negatively or positively?

KII8: Somehow it affects... It has a... a negative and positive effects so let's start sa
positive effects is of course since ma-pressure ka, kana gung since ma-pressure gyud
ka kana gung ga-aim gyud ka na dapat modako akong grades so maningkamot gyud
ka mao na siya so at the end of the day is kanang modako gyud siya then ang negative
effect ani is sometimes tungod sa kalisod, tungod kay sometimes dili nimo ma-
achieve kato na mga... Kato sa mga expectations nimo kato na mga desired outcomes
nimo sometimes kanang ma-frustrate ka or sometimes kanang ma-discourage ka na
ing-ani but at the end of the day gihapon kana gung naa gihapon ang pagpaningkamot
nimo.

Velly: Ah okay so thank you miss ahm so can you give some examples and more
details for some difficulties of you in learning ahm academic Subjects? Is there any...
Any factors or challenges?

KII8: Right now, siguro ang... Wala na koy makon... Na-explain na nako a while ago
na katong sa animation nako na... Dili... Lisod kaayo for me kasi I'm not that do... I'm
not really... I'm that good talaga in drawing, stick figure okay kakuan ko then lisod
siya for me gyud so mao lang gyud na ang mga struggles nako sa financially okay
lang man pud kasi dili man pud kaayo dagko ang mga ginagasto karon and by group
man pud ang mga... Ang mga trabaho na ginahatag sa imoha kay di kaayo siya kuan
ang financial.

Velly: Ah okay so thank you so ahm next is ah what are those subjects that IC... ICT
students that they have struggle? Or what are your subjects that you have problems?

KII8: Sa grade 12 na siya or grade 11? Velly: Ahm grade 12 and grade 11. KII8: Sa
grade 11 okay katong academic... Katong...
Velly: EAPP?

KII8: EAPP before kasi wala... Kasi wala pa gyud miy back-background knowledge
before kaya ma-consider nako siya na struggle kaayo siya sa ako before but karon
okay na kasi nasabtan na gyud nako and then karon animation mao gyud na,
animation murag mao na ang pinaka-struggle nako na murag mao na ang nag-naga-
push sa akoa nakakuan sa akoa, nganong ningsulod man kog ICT? Ana gud pero okay
man pud siya.

Velly: Okay so thank you and how are you able to learn effectively in your academic
subjects?

KII8: How I will able to learn effectively in my academic subjects. First is... Like
what I've said kanang sa senior highschool kanang they let you discover the things so
ako, I, myself I do research kanang unsa about ana kanang... Ako gyud kanang I make
an observation sa uban para kana siya is ma-achieve gyud nako na siya kanang I don't
let the teachers spoon feed na tanan ihatag sa imoha kanang gusto gyud nako na ako
gyud ang maka-learn ana in my own way na kanang sa akong pamaagi na dapat ing-
ani na ma-discover nako siya ay ing-ani diay ni siya bantog ra ing-ani na kanang ako
gyud kanang without ayy Though naa ang guidance, naa ang assistance sa teacher sa
imohang mga peer nimo but kanang ikaw gyud ang naningkamot ana.

Velly: Okay so thank you very much ahm next is do you have problems in your
english? If yes, tell us those problems.

KII8: So far, I don't have any problems in my english subject.

Velly: Okay so thank you so do you have problems in your math? If yes, can you tell
us what areas in math?

KII8: Before, grade 11 kasi grade 12 wala kiy subject na math, mathematics. Before,
grade 11 sa GenMath, okay lng sa o sa statistics makaya-kaya pa but GenMath kanang
di gyud... Di ko... Kanang I hate math honestly di gyud ko ganahan og math when it
comes sa mga functions kanang equations kap... Di ko ganahan memorayson kana
gung pag makakita pa lang kog numbers, nagbasa pa lng kog mga solv... Problem
kana gung wala pa gyud nako siya nabasa, tan-awon palang gyud nako kanang di na
ko ganahan mura kog maluya kay dili gyud ko ganahan sa math honestly even before
kanang GenMath gyud okay lang sa Business Math, okay lng.

Velly: Okay thank you so next is ahm do you have problems in your science? If yes,
can you tell us what areas in science?

KII8: Wala pud siya pero dili pud ko moingon na hawd ko sa science pero dili gud...
Guro depende pud sa teacher pero I'm not saying sa math ha kasi si Sir Sinco pero
hawd man jud si Sir Sinco it's just that ako lng gyud, kanang wala koy drive gyud
maminaw, wala gyud koy drive makatuon sa math kasi di ko, hate gyud nako but sa
science okay siya kasi si Sir Paring gusto gyud ni Sir Paring na masabtan gyud nimo
ana okay lang siys kanang though lisod ang science, dili mn pud ko ingon ana ka-
bright gyud sa science pero makaya-kaya lang siya compared sa math na di gyud ko
gusto.
Velly: Okay so thank you so ah do you have problems in Filipino? If yes, tell us those
problems.

KII8: So far, I don't have any problems in Filipino subject.

Velly: Okay so thank you so next is ah what are the strategies used in coping up those
factors That result problems in the academic subjects? So first is ahm... You said
earlier that the animation is one of your factors na makakuan sa imong...

KII8: Yeah, yeah. Velly: How do you cope up of what is your strategy in dealing with
that problem?

KII8: Right now I practice, I downloaded apps gyud na kanang naka-step by step
gyud siya na para for example sa anatomy, human anatomy kanang step by step gyud
dapat makuha nako siys mao na akong ginabuhat karon na kanang naga-nagatan-aw
ko sa youtube or unsa ba kanang any kanang any sources then nagapatudlo ko sa
akong classmate kanang I am very open with criticism kanang open ko sa mga
corrections to improve more sa akoang animation subject.

Velly: So thank you so ahm you said earlier that in your past year, your grade 11 na
you have struggle in research so how did you or what is... What do you or strategy
you use in coping with that problem or factors that can affect?

KII8: Okay before, in my animation case, since I have my college na ate na kanang on
going ana ilang research, nagapatudlo ko then nagakuha pud kog information sa uban
teachers like kay ma'am Apple, sa uban mga teachers na kanang naga-masteral and
kana sa mga grade 11 pud, sa mga grad... Sa mga alumni nato nagakuha ko sa ilahag
mga information and then naga-search gud ko kanang step by step for example every
part sa research, sa chapter 1 sa BOTS unsa mana siya kanang nagakuan ko unsa gyuy
sulod ana then para sayon nalang siya sa akoa mabutang... Unsa diay akong ibutang
diraa ana.

Velly: Okay so thank you ahm you said earlier about mathematics in your grade so
how... What is your strategy with in... In that problem?

KII8: Sa math, nagapatudlo gyud ko bahalag hate nako siya but I have kanag gung I
have to force myself na para makatuon gyud sa math kay dili man pwede na dili ko
maningkamot sa math kasi if dili ko maningkamot basin mao na ang rason basin
mabagsak ko so kailangan, kailangan dili ko mabagsak so nagapatudlo ko,
nagapangayo kog idea kana Gung mga, gusto kog shortcut na sa math kanang
synthetic na mga equations para madali ra nako makuha ana gud kanang ing-ana
dapat step by step kanang makuha gyud nako ah okay ing-ana diay siya ana gud, ana
akong ginabuhat since naa man pud koy mga classmate na hawd pud sa math sa ila, sa
ila ko nagapatudlo.

Velly: Okay so thank you so ahm next is how are you going to use those strategies?

KII8: How... Right now sa akong level or in the near future?

Velly: Ahm in the near future or right now.

KII8: Okay those strategies, how I'm going to use those strategies no of course in the
near... Right now is sa akoang sa case karon, kanang kato siya na mga strategies na
akoang ginagamit dali nalang siya para sa imoha kasi na-experience naman nimo siya
kato na mga butang so kabalo na ka if moabot to siya sa imoha karon na level, dali
nalang siya para sa imoha na kato siya is ma-overcome to nimo and in the near future
if mag-college since mas lisod pa man gyud sa college no sa na-experience nato sa
senior highschool though lisod siya sa senior highschool pero I believe mas lisod pa
gyud sa college so dali nalang to siya sa imoha na ay... Ay na-experience naman gud
nako na siya so kabalo na ko sa unsa akong buhaton if ever na moabot na siya if ever
pud na mas lala pa, mas grabe pa ang mahitabo sa imoha at least naa na kay... Naa na
kay mind-set ba ay nabuhat, na-overcome na man nako ni before so mas dapat mas
ma-overcome nako siya karon na kanang... Ang mga strategies nimo ma... Kanang
coping mechanism nimo is mas kana gung mas mag-level up pa.

Velly: Hmm so okay so thank you ahm how often do you use your techniques?

KII8: Actually, adrenaline rush siya kanang moabot ra na siya na kanang if I am in the
point na gyud na kanang need nako siyag assistance need nakog help pero if kaya pa
nako siya na ako lang sa, ako lang or if dili nako kaya, dira nako mangitag assistance
or dira na ko mangitag guidance from the other people.

Velly: Ahm you said earlier that about animation You have strategy ahm do you use
that strategy or do you have any, any techniques that you use or that is your really
technique or strategy about animation.

KII8: Sa animation mao lang gyud to akong ginabuhat gyud consistent gyud ko and
actually I have my practice sheet so didto naga-practice gyud ko kanang before,
before man gyud ko dapat mag-drawing gyud sa kanang naga-conceptualize na ko sa
action na akong buhaton unsa akong gusto i-drawing so kato siya before gyud to siya
ma-realize is naga-draft sa gyud ko kanang stick-stick sa siya then dira na nako gyud
i-finalize gyud og tarong para at the end kanang dali nalang siya.

Velly: Okay so thank you ahm, next is ah how effective your strategies in terms of
dealing with your problems? Let's start with, with your problem in animation so how
effective is your strategy?

KII8: Nakita gyud nako na effective gyud siya sa animation nako kay since naga-
improve siya right now akong drawing and since gina-check mn pud sa akong
animation teacher naa siyay ginabutang didto unsay kailangan nako i-enhance so kato
siya unsa amg mga comments didtoa, I follow it then after sa akoa... Pag ako na ang
mag-drawing pag actual na siya kanang makita gyud na naa gyuy improvement so
kato siya makaingon gyud ko it's quite effective kasi naa gyuy improvent na makita.

Velly: So in terms in your grade 11 about research ahm is your strategy effective?
How effective it is?

KII8: Yes, it's really effective when kang during sa grade 11 nako kato siya sa
research kanang kato man gung mga learnings na akong nakuha ma-apply gyud to
nako siya and ang nakanindot lng pud is kanang I have my own goal gud na unsaon
mn nako ni siya pagtirada, or unsa nako siya nga butang kana gung ing-ana na mind
set kato siys so it's really effective gyud.

Velly: Okay so ahm earlier you said then in your problem in math so can you tell or
can you share about how effective is your strategy when you... When you dealing with
your math problem?

KII8: Yes it's quite Effective when it comes sa math akong mga strategies na akong
ginagamit na kanang, kanang nagapangayo kog idea sa ilaha but ang nakakuan mn
gud malimtam mn gud nako dayon siya ana gud so since dili mn gyud nako gusto jud
ang math kaya wala koy labot actually karon gani nalipay ko na wala nay math no kay
okay lang siya kato, effective mn pud siya.

Velly: Okay so thank you ahm beside from those techniques, are there any techniques
you use or those are consistent?

KII8: Kato gyud akong mostly ginagamit consistent gyud siya ako gyud... Ako, I will
kuan na ang mga techniques gyud I use questioning nagapangutana gyud ko sa
kanang naay kanang mas credible no na ana kanang na-experience na sa ana then kato
I do reseach, I watch mov... I-I watch video clips regarding ana sa akong gusto matun-
an and kato siya ngapangayo gyud kog idea gyud sa mga kanang mas grabeg
knowledge mas grabeg experience sa akoa kato siya.

Velly: Okay so thank you ahm so next question last ah how do you perceived the
effectively of such strategy? So giunsa nimo pagkahibalo na effective diay to siya na
strategy?

KII8: When you see the result na siya, when you see na ang results sa imong gibuhat
is grabe gyud kanang naa gyuy improvement na nakita sa imoha, sa imohang trabaho
since you as individual as a student Sa imong academic performance kanang ing-ana
gud. Though lisod kaayo siya pero at the end of the day pag nakita nimo na ay nag-
increase, nag-improve akoang grades nagdako akoang grades, ay kanang nakit-an na
hala naay changes sa akoa kasi independent na kaayo ko kana gung... Kana gung I, I
learn how... Kanang makipag... Makipag-engage sa ubang tao through asking kanang
mga ing-ana gud kanang makakita ka na ay effective diay tong mga strategies kasi
naay changes, naay nindot na effect, naay positive effect sa imoha as an individual as
a student sa imohang performance, sa klase nimo, and imo, ikaw mismo as a human
being mao to siya kaya makaingon gyud ko nga effective gyud siya and kato pud if
makabalo ka na effective to siya, o i-padayon gyud nimo to siya.

Velly: Okay so thank you og... And this point, let u... Let's clarify your...

Nico: What are the primary factors related to the challenges of an ICT Student that
can affect their learning academic subjects in school? So imong tubag kay kuan...
Since perception siya kay kuan wala pa kay knowledge ani kay kini nga level kay
preparation for college so ang mga factors jud nimo diri kay kuan, sa animation kay
dili nimo passion ang kanang drawing ba...

KII8: Yes.
Nico: But since kailangan ma... Ay kailanga... Major mn siya so kailangan jud nimo
na mokuan nalang... Buhaton nimo to... Kuanon nimo imong best ba para ma-meet
tong mga requirements...

KII8: Yes.

Nico: Then kuan sa research pud sa imong grade 11 kay nagkaproblema pud ka ani
kay kuan kanang first time nimo sila... Ay naka-conduct ani though kabalo na ka sa...
Senior high school kay naay research so wala mn mo ka-experience so nagstruggle
jud ka ani about sa research.

KII8: Yes.

Nico: Mao ra to no? Imong factors wala nay lain?

KII8: Wala na so far.

Nico: Okay so 1.1. What do you know about senior highschool? What are your
expectations on it? So, so ang imong unsa nimo diri kay stage ni siya para kuan para
for prepare in college so dapat... Dapat diri na kuan level dapat kay prepared enough
na ka to face challenges ba for college nimo dapat prepared na ka to face challenges.

KII8: Yes.

Nico: So sa 1.2. Why do you chose ICT as your track in senior highschool in the first
place? So kaning ICT dili gyud nimo siya first choice...

KII8: Oo dili.

Nico: Ang first choice jud nimo kay HUMSS then ang second choice nimo kay ICT
then ang HUMSS... Ang ICT kay duol rang eskwelahan, isa pud sa nakuan nimo diri
sa ICT kay gusto kag certificate...

KII8: NC2 Certificate.

Nico: Oo NC2 Certificate kana, gusto pud nimo magkuri-kuri og kanang mga
computer then kuan pud magamit nimo... Ma-apply nimo siya sa inyong balay og
kuan makakwarta pud ka anang kuan kay tungod sa skills na...

KII8: Yeah.

Nico: Okay so sa 1.3. In terms of academic subjects in senior highschool, what can
you say about it? So diri kay good somehow lisod kay since first time pa man nimo
siya na-experience or na-encounter then ang mga subjects in junior highschool kay
english, science, math karon kay nag-upgrade na siya naglahi na siya...

KII8: Yes.
Nico: Then kuan pud diria pud kay kuan pud siya naa pud siyay good kay ang
teachers kay dili kanang ipakaon jud sa imoha ang subjects so ikas gyud mismo ang
mo-discover ana nga subject.

KII8: Yeah.

Nico: So okay so 1.4. What are your insights in dealing with your challenges
involving learning academic subjects? So diri kay it can affect your academic
perfomance, dili nimo makuan if dili ka maka-handle sa katong mga sub... Ay mga
