new breed RECENTLY, I RAN A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET FOR CATHOLIC BLOGS, HOPING I WOULD FIND ONE OR TWO
BLOGS DEALING WITH CATHOLIC ISSUES. I was in for a surprise. There I was, looking at a list of nearly a
thousand blogs that regularly discuss Catholic faith, apologetics, teachings of Church Fathers, Catholic
encyclicals, Catholic responses, Catholic rock music, Catholic design, Catholic art and a lot more than what
I would ever have imagined. And that too, in a new age media associated mostly with youth. “Well”, I
thought to myself, “this is indeed a new breed of Catholics”.
Soon I was looking into another new media – podcasts - and the results were eye opening, to say the least.
The new breed of young Catholics had got there too. In fact, the popular podcast Catholic Insider has been
among the top ten podcasts at podcastalley.com, a secular podcast portal on the net. Another video
podcast Catholic Minute, by the Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Roderick Vonhogen claimed to have over tens of

HEART TALK
“Why are things so different now?” One of the elders confronted me with
this question after a programme in Florida this February. Struck by the
vibrant faith and missionary zeal of the youth of today, he wondered why it
was that when he was a young man back in India, apart from traditional
prayers and religious practices, Christian families were not alive to prayers
of worship or active proclamation of the Word of God, and no mention was
made of a mission for the youth. The only answer is that the action of the
Holy Spirit is varied, and specific to different periods. In the present time,
it appears to be more important than ever that we proclaim our faith.
It is amazing what a simple proclamation of faith can accomplish. There is
this leading businessman from the Middle East – a Muslim –that I met last
month at the National Prayer Breakfast (a special gathering of leaders from
160 countries at the invitation of the President of USA) in Washington DC
who spoke of how he came to the faith. The very first time he was invited
several years back, he went just so he could meet and be introduced to
some influential people. All the while, as the various dignitaries shared
their faith experience, he sat there laughing inside of him, not taking
anything seriously. After the conference, a pregnant woman who worked as
a volunteer offered him a lift to the airport, and she shared her faith story
on the way in a simple but touching manner. He was still laughing to
himself, when she suddenly asked for permission to pray with him. To his
surprise, during that powerful time of prayer, he burst into tears. Everything
changed from that moment onwards. He started to study the Scriptures,
and today he lives his faith among people of other religions in the Middle
East, powerfully witnessing the Good News. It all began with the simple
faith of a young pregnant woman who could have rushed home after her
volunteer work, finding enough reasons for not having concerns outside of
herself considering her condition.
The world is in need of Jesus. As far as our movement is concerned, it is
possible that at times our focus is more on organization and infrastructure,
trying to get things done on paper. We need to ensure that we have only
one aim before us - the souls who are in need of salvation. All other things
should only support this mission... So let this Lent be a time of
purification for us personally and for the movement. We read in John 2
how Jesus clears the temple. The sellers and moneychangers there had
probably begun with good intentions, to make things easy for the people
who came to offer sacrifices and worship. Somewhere along the way, their
actions and motives seem to have changed, provoking Jesus to drive them
out. Likewise, have we, in the name of sophistication and comfort added
to our initial purpose, things that God does not desire? If so, let us in this
season of Lent clear out everything from within us and from the movement
that is not part of God’s plan.
I had a few days to take stock of my life and enter into the spirit of Lent
while I was at Medjugorje (a place of Marian apparitions) at the beginning
of this month. Particularly inspiring and enriching was the time spent in
the company of Sr. Emmanuel, a close friend of the visionaries. Whenever
she said grace before meals, she closed with the words, “Jesus you are
invited”. She explained that each time we venerate Jesus, love His name, or
invite Him, He is truly present... When we invite Him, though, we should
remember this story of a man of great faith who designed a beautiful
mansion with a special room just for Jesus. When the house was finally
built, and he had invited Jesus to occupy the best room, he believed that
all would be well with him. However, problems still arose, and when the
darkness got unbearable he asked Jesus, “Why?” Jesus answered with a
smile,”It is true that you have given me the best room you have; but there
are more rooms in this house!“
Let us therefore, venerate Jesus even more ardently, love Him more
fervently, and invite Him more adoringly, laying open every area of our lives
as we say, “Jesus you are invited”.

A bold new breed

thousands of young listeners around the world.
Young people were busy chatting away about
Tertullian’s discourses on the sacraments,
St.Augustine’s Confessions, the rosary, the
encyclicals of Pope John Paul II, and the books
of Cardinal Ratzinger, in cyberspace. Now this
is something I wouldn’t have imagined ten
years ago.
The American journalist Colleen Carroll in her
now famous book, The New Faithful : Why
Young Adults Are Embracing Christian
Orthodoxy looks closely at this phenomenon
that she calls the ‘new faithful’ - vibrant,
proud, young and intellectual Catholics -
who seem to be making a radical difference
wherever they are. Interestingly, many of the
observations that Colleen makes about this
new generation of faithful in her book are
quite relevant to the Jesus Youth lifestyle
and characteristics.
Making an impact wherever they are
These young people are obviously not
recluses or hermits, but people who excel in
their professions and make an impact on the
societies they live in. They are quite
comfortable with the fast paced lifestyle of
today as much as they are comfortable with
the Word of God and the Catechism of the
Catholic Church. A closer look at ministries
like the Jesus Youth professionals’ ministry
and similar ministries reveals that most of
these Catholic professionals maintain a high
level of excellence in their careers and are
respected by their colleagues.
Passionately in love with the Church
Anyone who has been to the World Youth
Day celebrations has surely got a taste of
this fervour. For each World Youth Day, more
and more young people travel thousands of
miles to meet the Holy Father and celebrate
their faith with their peers.
The powerful move of the Spirit through the
Catholic Charismatic Renewal, and the
emergence of several Catholic lay
movements like Opus Dei, Fococlare,

for their beliefs,
and the creative
use of talents seem
to be two key
characteristics of
this new
generation.
Sant’Egidio, Communion & Liberation, and
many more including our own young movement,
Jesus Youth, have also been significant
influences in helping youth grow closer to the
Church. Suddenly, young lay people are
studying theology, making presentations on
Catholic doctrine, and poring over Church
documents diligently. These movements have
also become platforms for young Catholics to
work together with the clergy. In the Jesus
Youth we have seen a recent spurt in the
number of young engineers, doctors and other
professionals discovering their religious
vocation after their studies.
Returning to the roots
These young people who sway to Catholic rock
bands also bow down in deep adoration
before the Holy Eucharist. They are also turning
to traditional Catholic devotions like the rosary
more than ever before. Many of the religious
traditions rejected by their parents are being
fervently adopted by these kids. Traditional
Church music like Gregorian chants and
traditional styles of adoration are beginning to
be used widely again. Surely, we are witnessing
a return to the roots.
Welcoming challenges
The earlier generation always imagined that
diluting religion would attract more young
people to the Church. Yet ironically, it is the
extremely demanding lifestyle of Catholicism
that seems to draw youth to the Church.
Leaders like John Paul II who loved the youth
but never minced words are right on the top of
their list of favourites. While the entire world
was telling young people to live life on their
own terms, John Paul II always called young
people to a life of prayer, self-sacrifice and
service. And it looks like they loved him the
more for it. This trend is also reflected in the
young people who are part of Jesus Youth
ministries. In fact, around ten of the applicants
for this year’s Full Time Volunteers’ Training are
brilliant engineering graduates who decided to
set aside their career for a year. It reminds me of
a young woman who left her fast-track job to
embrace a life of poverty, chastity, and
obedience in a religious order. “It’s the
only thing that ever demanded everything of
me,” she explained.
Bold and creative initiatives
The boldness to take public stances for their
beliefs, and the creative use of talents seem to
be two key characteristics of this new
generation. The recent chastity movement
across the US and pro-life movements around
the world are all spearheaded by young
Catholics who dare to take a stance. A T-shirt
worn by a young Catholic at a pro-life rally
proclaims it boldly: You will not kill my
generation.
Just look around and you’ll see creativity at
work. Suddenly an entire new range of Catholic
video films, blogs, podcasts, and websites have
appeared, not to mention new ministries like
music videos, animations, video games, art, and
a lot more. The Holy Spirit seems to be working
overtime.
So where does all this lead? And will this
endure? Well, these young men and women are
sure to face many struggles in the future. But
the Holy Spirit who initiated this springtime
will surely give them the courage to sustain
their faith. One promising sign is that these
young people do carry their faith into their
married lives. The teachings of the Church are
often strictly followed by the young couples on
issues of contraception and birth control. They
also deeply desire to help their children
discover the living presence of Christ and the
vibrancy of the Catholic Church in their
families. Let us pray together that the Holy
Spirit, in the course of time, will use the bold
initiatives of this generation to reshape our
culture and our world for the Lord.

As I listen to your experiences now, I can see
that every area of your life is suffused with
the presence of Jesus. Was it always so?
Dr. Julio: Not really. Though I was brought up
in a devout Catholic family, the moment I
entered college, I found all the foundations of
my faith completely shaken. But just as I
began to drift into the ways of the world, one
of my closest friends, Mathan (now in his final
year of preparation for the priesthood)
attended a Charismatic retreat that changed
his life. The change I saw in him persuaded
me to attend a retreat which became a turning
point in my life. Soon I discovered a precious
group of friends in the Jesus Youth prayer
group started by Dr. Manoj, who is today the
Animator of the JY National Team in the U.S. It
is in this group that I slowly discovered the
most prized treasure in my life - my
relationship with Jesus.
Dr. Anju: I come from a traditional Catholic
family, but I never really experienced a
personal relationship with Jesus. In Medical
college, I came across a book of Sadhu Sundar
Singh in which he said that if anyone invited
Jesus, he would definitely come into their
hearts. So I began asking Jesus to come into
my life. Almost immediately, I got an
opportunity to attend a retreat where I
accepted Jesus as my personal Lord. It was as
if my whole nature changed. A great hunger
for prayer and the Word of God came upon me.
It is a joy to listen to both of you; how you
complement, support and inspire each
other. Would you tell us about this
togetherness that you enjoy in Jesus?
Dr. Julio: As I surrendered my life, one thing I
decided was to discern God’s will always,
People who know Dr. Julio and Dr. Anju always speak of them as a beautiful example of a
Christ-centred couple. When I spoke to them over the phone for this interview, the reason became
quite obvious. Recently, as part of their ministry, the couple dared to take a 15 day break from work
to go on a thrilling drive with their children right across the United Kingdom, to meet with Jesus
Youth leaders, to pray and build loving relationships. Dr. Julio, who works as a radiologist in the
United Kingdom, is also the Animator of the Jesus Youth there. They live in Cardiff, Wales, with
their children Joan, Irene and Daniel.

most importantly, in my vocation of
marriage. And today, as I see how He has
made our likes, our desire for prayer, our
vision and our ministries correspond, I am
so grateful to the Lord. It is indeed such a
blessing when amidst our hectic
schedules, we can go that extra mile to
give each other the space and time for
prayer. Often, when I return after a tiring
day, Anju would pep me up with an
insight, a word or a thought that the Holy
Spirit had put in her heart during the day.
And that’s something beautiful.
Dr. Anju: What I cherish is the immense joy
of serving the same Master. The Church
Father Tertullian sums it up nicely in a
quote that I recently read in the Catechism
of the Catholic Church. “ How wonderful the
bond between two believers, now one in
hope, one in desire, one in discipline, one
in the same service! They are both children
of one Father and servants of the same
Master, undivided in spirit and flesh, truly
two in one flesh”. And in time, as he
blessed us with children, this bond also
united us in a call we have as parents.
You spoke of a call that you have as
parents. Could you elaborate?
Dr. Anju: Well, to begin with, I was doing
my Post Graduation, when our eldest
daughter Joan was concieved. After much
prayer we took a decision to postpone my
career, as we felt the strong need for our
children to be with us in their initial years.
As God blessed us with Daniel and Irene,
my career has been set aside further. Many
people have called this decision
impractical, but today, as we look at kids

around us growing without the personal
care of parents, we feel it was the right
decision.
Dr. Julio: Besides, I think there is a call for
us Jesus Youth parents to give our
children the encounter of Jesus at home –
the same encounter that we experienced in
our youth - so that they will be equipped
to face this troubled world confidently.
Also, I believe we have a call to lovingly
discipline our children in the way of the Lord.
Were there special interventions of God
in your life that deepened your
relationship with Him?
Dr. Anju: When I was pregnant with
Daniel, I was diagnosed with a large
tumour in my stomach that was growing
fast. The doctors suggested abortion, but
we decided to go ahead with the baby. We
experienced a great protection as the Lord
intervened with His healing hand. He
prevented the tumour from growing and
blessed me with a normal delivery inspite
of the tumour in my tummy. And when I
went in for surgery, the doctors asked us
to be prepared for the worst. For me, it was
a time of reckoning as I mentally prepared
myself to face death. I examined myself
and my faith before Jesus once again. And
I experienced the peace that comes with
being completely in Christ. Suddenly, the
eternal destination became very real and
more important than everything else. The
fact that we are all just pilgrims on earth
became crystal clear to me. But after the
operation, we realized that the Lord had
protected us again. The tumour was safely
removed. And then when I had trouble
feeding my baby after the operation, the
Lord worked a miracle once more. Though it
was a time of trial, it was also a time of
abundant grace in our lives.
Dr. Julio: It was only my relationship with
Jesus that kept me strong at the moment
when I was told the news of the tumour. It
was one of those occasions when I realized
that all that matters is our living
relationship with Him.
How is your Jesus-centred lifestyle
reflected in your profession?
Dr. Julio: Let me tell you about the time
when I was doing my clinical experience

Deus Caritas Est has attracted a
wide readership, a spontaneous
curiosity having been aroused at
the new Pope’s maiden encyclical.
Many comments and lengthy
corollaries have come out in
expounding this document and its
appeal to different kinds of people
and for different situations.
One of the things that struck me
most is the Pope’s ingenuity that
knots the love of God and love of
neighbour into indissoluble union.
He speaks of the social character of
sacramental mysticism, the
highest form of which takes place
in the Eucharist: “Union with
Christ is also union with all those
to whom he gives himself. I cannot
possess Christ just for myself; I
can belong to him only in union
with all those who have become, or
who will become, his own.
Communion draws me out of myself
towards him, and thus also
towards unity with all Christians.”
(No. 14)
He makes candid the Eucharist’s
relationship to social commitment:
“a Eucharist which does not pass
over into the concrete practice of
love is intrinsically fragmented”
(italics mine). The Eucharist being
the centre of Christian life, the
word “intrinsically fragmented”
hints at a rupture that is deep and
inescapable from the attention of
any disciple of the Lord.
Every liturgical celebration of the
Eucharist includes the rite of
“breaking of bread”- fragmenting-,
an intense sign of Jesus’ self-
emptying for us. This is followed
by a gesture of mixing it with Holy
Blood, an evocative sign of His
Resurrection from the dead and
abiding presence (communion)
with the faithful. The fragmenting
in the Eucharist is a challenge for a
fragmented and alienated world to
find the authentic way - namely
the way of the Crucified and Risen
Lord - to build communion and
fellowship.
The life received and shared at the
Eucharistic table is both a prelude
to and an outcome of Christian
fellowship. It is the love that is
given to us in the Eucharist, the
exemplar token of divine sharing,
which sets the love for each other

as an imperative. “Love can be
“commanded” because it has first
been given” (No. 14). Christians
learn to love after the example of
God’s self-gift to them in the
Eucharist. The Eucharist enables
the partaker to smash the cocoons
of an egoistic existence and to
come out and discover the
prospect of a common living with
the rest of society based on values
of mutuality and care.
The Eucharist is not only the
source of a committed social living
for a believer; it is the goal of such
interactive relationship as well.
Perfect communion with God and
others is still awaiting its
fulfillment in the Kingdom of
Heaven. Every initiative we
undertake, to make flesh the divine
life we have received, is a step
towards perfect communion.
I am challenged personally for I
have not only been a participant,
but also a celebrant of this
ineffable mystery for many years now.
The indelible lines of the native
devotional hymn ‘ormavecha
naalmuthal osthiyil ninne kanunnu”
(from the age of cognition, I see you
in the Host) resonate within me. I
feel the pangs in me of the
fragmented Eucharistic celebrations
wwhenever I came to celebrate it and
love was absent in me for God and for
others
wwhenever I turned a deaf ear to the
cry of the needy and the oppressed
wwhenever I rested content for
having celebrated a Eucharist, and
did little to build up the nation and
the Church which is the living body
of the Eucharistic Lord
wwhenever the Eucharist was towed
into a routine pious habit without my
having mercy on the bereaved hearts
around me
wwhenever I failed to approach the
Eucharist with faith and welcome its
transforming power in my life
wwhenever I failed to work for peace
and reconciliation, to bridge the
divisions among my family members
and in my neighborhood, or abetted
the communal conflicts and did
nothing to heal the divisions
w whenever I… the list goes on.

centre in Ireland. It was a time when I came
into direct contact with many who were
brought to the centre after failed suicide
attempts and drug overdoses. Speaking to
them and seeing their unbelievably shattered
lives, it became clear to me that medicine and
counselling are severely limited in helping
them. So I would share my experience of
Jesus, which I found, made a real difference.
Another aspect is that my experience of Jesus
has helped me to set aside my ego and
behave lovingly to those who are rude to me. I
remember one specific incident where a very
rude junior colleague of mine underwent a
transformation because she was surprised by
my unexpected response.
Dr. Anju: We also remember the blessings
God has showered in Julio’s profession. Julio
has always strived to live a balanced life: to
grow spiritually, to give the best to the
family, and to excel in his studies and
profession. And sometimes, it has been really
difficult. But the more effort he has put in,
the more I have seen the Lord blessing him
with excellence. I especially remember the
time when he was preparing for his FRCS –
there was very little time to study and the
exams were really tough. And there was
an important Jesus Youth leaders’
programme on the day before his exams.
However, after prayer and discernment, he
decided to be present at the programme.
And when the results arrived, the Lord had
blessed him with good marks.
In spite of your hectic life, you still find
time to disciple young people and work
with Jesus Youth groups. How do you
manage to do that?
Dr. Julio: We believe that as a couple, we
have a specific call to help young people
grow – through personal counselling and
discipling sessions. When we were in
Ahmedabad, India before we moved to UK,
we used to work with small Jesus Youth
groups. Now I am an animator of the Jesus
Youth and we spend time with young
people as much as we can. Besides, we
know that it is through such cell groups
and the efforts of our senior Jesus Youth
that both of us grew deeper in the Lord.
If there’s one thing that you would share
from your life with the Jesus Youth
reading this newsletter, what would it
be?
Dr. Anju: At the time that I was diagnosed
as having a tumour and confronted possible
death, I suddenly felt the importance of each
person’s eternal destination. So a burden for
the eternal destination of others and the
need to share Jesus with everyone became
acute in me. I think we should see
evengelisation in this context.
Dr. Julio: When we meet some youth these
days, we feel that sometimes activities can
take priority over the relationship with
Jesus. The most important foundation of
Jesus Youth has always been a deep
relationship with the Lord through the
constants. So it is important that while we
grow and take root across the world, our
core strength should always be this living
union with Jesus.

5 Questions on Christian Work Ethics
Could you tell us about your initial Jesus
experience and your ministry?
It was almost 20 years ago, while pursuing my degree,
that I first received a touch from the Lord. Gradually,
as a desire to share my experience with others grew, I
became involved in the campus ministry and the
music ministry of Jesus Youth.
You have been working with some of the best
corporates in India and abroad. How do you
maintain your Christian identity in different
situations?
Well, its difficult. For example in my current office in
Dubai, my colleagues come from five different
countries and diverse faiths. But the Lord has helped
me maintain my identity through my prayer every
morning, by the way I greet everyone with a pleasant
smile, by the stances I take on issues, and above all,
by the different lifestyle that Jesus calls us to live.
Could you elaborate on this different lifestyle ?
Often the use of bad language and swear words have
become quite acceptable in today’s workplaces. So
has gossiping, enjoying of coarse jokes, speaking
with sexual overtones and deliberately belittling
others in office. Throughout my career, the Lord has
always given me a special grace to speak pleasantly,
respect people around me and stay clear of impure
discussions. And I have noticed that others too slowly
began to respect this lifestyle and would put an end
to such discussions and topics when I was around.
Is this lifestyle just about language and
discussions?
Certainly not. It is about our entire approach to power,
position and career growth. I remember a time when a
few colleagues tried to draw me into a struggle for
power. Somehow at that time, the Lord gave me a firm
conviction that all power belongs to Him alone, and
that there is no point in my trying to protect my
career. Once this became clear to others, they began
to respect my approach. In situations where there was
a mistake on my part, the Lord gave me the humility
and the freedom to admit it, much to the surprise of
my subordinates. And in the corporate world where
admitting any mistake is a sign of weakness, this is a
radically different stance.
Do you think the Lord has a specific plan in your
workplace as a Christian professional?
Oh yes! I believe I am called to be my colleagues’
keeper. And the Lord has given me a special charism
of listening to the problems of my colleagues and
praying for them. I believe that as Jesus Youth, we are
called to build a different culture in today’s
workplaces.

Launched on New Year’s Day
2006, Youth Vibes has marked the
entry of Jesus Youth into the fast
growing new age media of podcasting – a
media that is becoming extremely popular with
both young and old alike. Podcast is the term used for a web feed of audio
files (although increasingly people are applying the term to video and other
media) that is placed on the Internet for anyone to download. Updated every
Monday, Youth Vibes features a whole range of aspects relevant to young
people today. It also hopes to present a Christian perspective to current
issues and spirituality in an interesting format. The twelve episodes

AN EXHIBITION WITH A DIFFERENCE
At a time when Christmas is reduced to mere fanfare and celebrations, Jesus Youth in
Delhi organised a unique three-day exhibition at the Sacred Heart Cathedral from 22nd
to 25th December 2005 to spread the real message of Christmas. The exhibition,
which was inaugurated by His Grace Archbishop Vincent M. Concessao, attracted
nearly 40,000 people, of which more than 95 per cent were non-Christians. The
various stalls in the exhibition made the best use of the print, audio and visual
media to project different themes like stories from the Bible, Pro-life, Kerygma, Word
of God, Church, etc. Enthusiastic Jesus Youth volunteers answered probing questions
as they guided the vistors through the various presentations. This year’s exhibition
was dedicated to Pope Benedict XVI, and a commitment register was kept for the
visitors to offer any number of Rosaries, Masses, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
or Night Vigils for the intentions of the Holy Father for 2006. This commitment
register was later sent to the Holy Father along with a supporting letter from the
Archbishop. Another unique feature was the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at
the venue all through the exhibition days. The visitors were encouraged to spend
some time with the Lord. The Christmas Exhibition, initiated by Jesus Youth in a
small way in 1998, has now become a integral part of the Archdiocese of Delhi’s
efforts to make Christmas celebrations more meaningful.

Co-ordinator and Jomy Abraham as the
Animator along with a team of around 35
members who gather regularly for practice
and prayer sessions and night vigils, the
Covenant Singers have given several
performances across the different Emirates.
Their first programme ‘The Answer’ held at
St Mary’s Church, Dubai, with more than
3000 people as audience, helped
strengthen the Jesus Youth presence in Dubai. A recent show held at St
Joseph’s Church, Abu Dhabi, was blessed by the presence of His Excellency
Bishop Paul Hinder, Bishop of the Vicariate of Arabia. Highly impressed by
the energy and content of the show, His Excellency has invited the team to
do a show for the whole parish. The Covenant Singers are also being
invited to minister to other Middle East countries. The team is currently
working on bringing out an album of their original compositions, and is
involved in doing programmes for a Christian television channel.

REPORT
‘Communion 2006’ – a Jesus Youth family gathering of priests and
religious saw 67 priests and 163 nuns from across India coming
together at Ashirbhavan, Cochin, Kerala from 16th to 18th February
2006. Rev. Fr. Fio Mascarenhas SJ from Mumbai - a renowned
Charismatic preacher of international repute - conducted the key
sessions along with Fr. Jophy SDB, Colin Calmiano, and other Jesus
Youth resource persons. The participants were also given an
orientation on the JY network and lifestyle. The presence of Mar
Thomas Chakiath, Auxiliary Bishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly and
Episcopal Advisor of CCR, Kerala, and Joshua Mar Ignatius, Auxiliary
Bishop of Trivandrum was an added source of motivation. The lively
music, insightful skits and anointed prayer sessions – all in the Jesus
Youth style - appealed greatly to the participants. The
programme was significant in the history of Jesus Youth as
this was the first time that such a large group of priests and
nuns who animate and support the movement had come
together for interaction and prayer. Let us remember these
anointed and faithful stewards of grace as they continue on
their mission to proclaim Christ.

NEW DELHI
n A prayer group seminar with Dr. Edward
Edezhath, Animator - JYIT as the main resource
person was organised from 10th – 12th Mar. 2006
at Navintha Retreat Centre, Okhla for 65
participants with the aim of strengthening the
prayer groups in Delhi and North India.
RAJASTHAN
n Two programmes were held on 21st and 24th
Feb. 2006 for about 40 students each of St.
Patrick’s School and St. Paul’s School.
JHARKHAND
n A retreat was conducted in Hindi from
2nd - 5th Feb. 2006 at St. Xavier’s School,
Hazaribagh for 250 youth.
MUMBAI
n A North-Indian Campus Leaders’ Gathering
was organised by the National Campus Ministry
to train campus leaders and promote new
leadership in North India at Vinalaya, Mumbai
from 14th to 16th January 2006 with around 35
participants from different colleges.
ORISSA
n A half-day programme for 30 parish youth was
conducted on 12 th Jan. 2006 at the Cathedral
Church, Balasore, with an emphasis on
maintaining a personal relationship with the
Lord.
NORTH EAST
n A training programme was held for 76 young
participants from 14th - 18th March 2006 at
Jirsong Asong Pastoral Centre, Diphu, Assam.
The presence of Fr. Tom Mangattuthazhe
(Pastor - JY North East) was an added
encouragement. Several initial level programmes
were also conducted by a team of fulltime
volunteers in the North East between 27th Jan.
and 7th Feb. 2006.
TAMIL NADU
n Harvest’ 05 was conducted at Santhome
Cathedral Hall, Chennai on 17th and 18th Dec.
2005, for 120 participants, all of whom were
attending a JY programme for the first time.
n A one-day programme for 400 youth was held
at Holy Cross College, Trichy on 22nd Jan. 2006.
A zonal gathering was held on 26th Jan. 2006 at
the Bishop’s House, Trichy for 45 prayer group
members and leaders.
n A leaders’ training programme ‘With Him’ was
held at the Nirmala Matha School, Moolakarae in
Erode for 40 students from 11th and 12th March
2006.
KERALA
n The Thejus Bible Course is conducted for
around 30 participants on the 2nd weekend of
every month at Emmaus, Ernakulam. The classes
are led by learned Bible scholars from the clergy
and the laity. The KCBC Bible Commission
Chairman, Fr. Cyrus Velamparambil, is one of
them.
n Junior Evangelisers’ Trainers’ Team (JETT) is a
one-year training programme for parish and
campus youth. This year the participants have
been selected from among the 255 participants of
3 initial retreats conducted in different parts of
Kerala. This training takes place through a series
of 5-day programmes conducted 4 times a year.

came together at the Bishop Lane Retreat
Centre in Rockford, Illinois, for the leaders’
conference ‘Mission 2005’ inaugurated by
Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath on 27th Dec.
2005. Mark Nimo, a renowned international
speaker from Ghana and Dr. Edward
Edezhath, Animator - JY International Team,
led the sessions. The JY National Team was
reconstituted on 1st Jan. 2006 at the end of
the conference under the guidance of Dr.
Edward. Saji Sebastian took on a second
term as National Co-ordinator and Sony
Thevalakara the new role of Assistant Co-
ordinator. Team members include Leena
Philip, Princy Varughese, John Nellikunnel,
Sunil Nadarajan, Dr. Sindhu Subhadra,
Kuruvilla Abraham, Jane Mathew, Binu
Abraham, Jevelson Simenthy, Jyothni
Malaickal, Thomas Pulickal, and Tisha
Thomas. Dr. Abraham Mathew is the new
animator. Fr. Thomas Tharayil will continue
as Pastor. The first meeting of the new team
was held on 21st and 22nd Jan. 2006 in
Hershey, Pennsylvania. Members of the

n Night Vigil, Chicago
An all-night vigil, with music sessions, Way
of the Cross, Rosary, Mass, and Adoration,
was conducted in Chicago on 4th Mar. 2006.

n Youth Fest, New Jersey
A youth fest was held on 25th Feb. 2006 at
St. Anastasia, Teaneck, NJ to reflect on the
theme ‘Renew Cologne’. The day’s activities
included testimonials of the participants of
WYD 2005 in Cologne, as well discussions on
their expectations of WYD Australia in 2008.
n Southeast Regional Meeting, Florida
The Southeast Regional Service Team met on
10th and 11th Mar. 2006 in Gainesville, Florida
to develop a plan of action for the area.

n Jesus Youth Launched Officially
Dr. Edward Edezhath, Animator, JYIT visited
Qatar from 8th - 10th Jan. 2006 and
conducted two evening sessions for leaders,

on JY lifestyle, ministries, cell groups, etc.
Fr. Jose Thachukunnel OFM Cap gave his
support and guidance. After helping to form
the first JY National Service Team for Qatar,
Dr. Edward had meetings with the local
clergy to appraise them of the JY activities
across the world. Fr. Tomasito B. Veneracion
OFM Cap, the Vicar of the Catholic Church in
Qatar, agreed to take on responsibility as
Pastor of Jesus Youth in Qatar. He also

2005’, a leaders’ conference at Illinois, USA.

Thirteen Jesus Youth from different parts of
Germany assembled in Bonn, for the 3rd JY
Germany Gathering on 12th March 2006. Fr.

a day, included a session by Manoj Sunny on

n Family Gathering
A family gathering was held at Covenant
Retreat Centre, Coventry from 28th - 29th Jan.
2006 with 65 participants. The programme
began with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
followed by input sessions, panel sharings and
discussion in groups. The presence of
Fr. Sebastian Arikat, Pastor JY UK, throughout
the programme was very encouraging.
n Discipleship Training Programme
A Discipleship Training Programme for 25
participants was held at Birmingham on 11th
Mar. 2006. Fr. Sebastian Arikat, Dr. Julio
Kandathil, Sunil Simon, and Jose Mathew led
the sessions. This one year project will have
follow ups in various regions on a periodic basis.
n Rexband Follow up Programme
As a follow up of the Rexband concert held
at Chesterfield in July 2005, a programme
with 25 participants was held on 7th January
2006. The programme included praise and
worship, a healing session and a service for
the infilling of the Holy Spirit.

‘Youth Light’, a twelve week long programme

half long session each week, is based on the

The workshop, held at Mt. Carmel Parish Hall,
Sydney, gave an inspiring insight into the JY
International Full-time Volunteers’ Training
Programme that is to be held later this year.
