Lesson Idea Name: Eww, math word problems

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 7th grade

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE7.EE.3 Solve multistep real-life and mathematical problems posed with
positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals) by applying
properties of operations as strategies to calculate with numbers, converting between forms as appropriate,
and assessing the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies.

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE -Standard 3 Students critically curate a variety of resources using
digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for
themselves and others. Students evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility and relevance of information,

Lesson idea implementation: For this lesson, students will be beginning with looking at the different word
problems based on the concept that was studied last unit. The teacher will ask the student what are the word
problems asking in general, how would students solve these problems? Some students will share their
thoughts on word problem. After some students shared their thoughts on word problems, the teacher will
show the Brain Pop video on the importance of the word problems. Students will discuss in pairs to discuss
the importance and relative to mathematics and the world. In the pairs, students will then create their own
word problem. Partners will exchange the problems. At the end of class students will turn in the completed
word problem.

This lesson incorporates the importance of understanding word problems. The video presents the
information well that students can understand and relate to because many students do not like word
problems in math. The reason for that is because students must interpret the information given to them and
then solve the problem. While most math problem just ask students to solve the equation or compute the
answer.

Reflective Practice: This lesson will impact students learning is because through understanding the
importance of reading and understanding word. There will not be a fear for students to practice of word
problems. Some students will struggle still after this lesson but as a teacher will need to be encouraging to
students. The goal is to continue practicing all concepts to connect them and connect those concepts to
students’ everyday life which is the purpose of math problems.
