possibly G2): m. chimes A B C D
Group 3
CROTAL (from the second octave keyboard) ON A JAPANESE RIN (medium size, turned upside down): crot./rin
WALDTEUFEL (as high as possible, with a metal box): waldt.
WOOD STICK: w. stick
“BELL” CYMBAL (heavy, 8", turned upside down on the TIMPANO 2): b. cymb.

Group 8
3 GUIROS: guiro 1 2 3
THUNDER TUBE (Spring Tube): th. tube
Group 9
SHIMEDAIKO (above the TIMPANO 1, very close to the skin): shim.
Group 10
2 MOKUBIOS (one fixed on a stand - it could be a very high WOOD BLOCK - , the other to be held in the hand): mok. fixed; mok. hand
Group 1
6 very high Little Bells (for instance: 2 Furin, 2 Chinese Bells, 2 Goat Bells). They are suspended from a frame. At each occurrence, the
performer will decide freely which instrument or pair of instruments to play (paying attention not to play the same instrument twice successively)
Group 2
4 different Metal Chimes or Plates (for instance: Kane, Tubular Bell, Plate Bell, Gong) producing the same pitch - possibly G2 - in the medium-
low register, with different but perfectly mixable colors). They are suspended from a frame.
Group 3
Crotal (from the second octave keyboard) on a Japanese Rin (medium size, turned upside down). The Crotal lies on a Japanese Rin which is put,
turned upside down, on a foam rubber. The Crotal is played by raising it a little bit from the Rin with the fingers (depending on dynamics), and
letting it bounce against the convex surface of the Rin
Waldteufel (as high as possible, with a metal box). The box has to be suspended from a frame so that the instrument could be played with one
hand (no need to hold it in the other hand)
Wood Stick: a normal wood stick played by rapidly scraping it on the rim of the Timpano 1
“Bell” Cymbal (heavy, 8"). It lies, turned upside down, on the Timpano 2) and is normally played with mallets
Ice Bell. It lies, turned upside down, on the Timpano 2) and is normally played with mallets
Japanese Rin. It lies, turned upside down, on the Timpano 2) and is normally played with mallets
Korean Rin. It lies, turned upside down, on the Timpano 2) and is normally played with mallets
Group 4
3 Rain Sticks (long, very long, as long as possible). They are suspended from a frame by a bracket with an articulated joint to which they are
fixed: this device should allow the instrument to be played with only one hand, by acting on the extremity of the pipe
Sand Blocks. A Sand Block to be glided on a thin glass-paper covered board, so that the instrument can be played with only one hand
Group 5
4 Maracas (2 metal Maracas, 2 wooden Maracas). They have to be tied to a rope by the handle and suspended from a frame, so that they can be
played with only one hand. N.B. The middle line of the staff is both for the metal Maracas and the wood Maracas: the performer will decide freely
and randomly which of the two instruments to play
Group 6
6 different Rattles (long chain) - Mahlwayi (A), Colanut Belt (B), Goat’s Hoof Rattle (C), 2 Jujus Belts - small (D), big - (E) , Grelot Belt (F).
Each of them hung on a frame, close to the Timpano 1. N.B. Each line of the staff is for two instruments: the performer will decide freely and
randomly which of the two to play
Group 7
Pedal Bass Drum (producing a very low and deep sound, if necessary muffled with covering the front skin with a piece of cloth). Try to produce
different dark and soft strokes by different pedal pressures
Group 8
3 Guiros (different in size and sound-grain – in any case the should allow the production of a long sound, finely granulated). The three instruments
are fixed on a stand in three very close parallel rows
Thunder Tube (Spring Tube). It is suspended from a frame and played by one hand that gently shakes the cylinder (not the coil)
Group 9
Shimedaiko. It is put above the Timpano 1, very close to the skin - no more than 1-2 cm.), in order to provoke the sympathetic resonance of the
Timpano
Group 10
2 Mokubios. One instrument is fixed on a stand - it could be a very high Wood Block – , the other has to be held in the hand that continuously
opens and closes the hole below the instrument, while the other hand draws, slowly and obliquely, a reibestock on the upper side. The “fixed
Mokubio” is played in the same manner but only with one hand, by drawing the reibestock without acting on the hole with the other hand
Additional Symbols
Rain Stick uncontrolled by the hands, maximum gradient (till the end of the sound, in most cases)
Let vibrate
Dampen abruptly the resonance or stop the sound
S.T. Sul Timpano: play the rattles with the hands in a way they can touch and scrape the Timpano’s skin. Their sound should be increased
in volume and resonance
(head of the mallets down) Play the instrument with the handle of the beaters

Fiati
: Key trill (key pedal). Trill on the same note using an unrelated key.
Archi
: tremolo d’arco irregolare e rapidissimo con movimento longititudinale rispetto alla corda (muovendosi su e giù tra il ponticello e
la tastiera, come “spazzolando” le corde)
: toneless bowing. For the viola: bow played obliquely on the bridge; for the cello and the double bass: bow played on the side of
the bridge
Generali
: un quarto di tono sopra
: tre quarti di tono sopra
: un quarto di tono sotto
: tre quarti di tono sotto
: glissando verso l’alto, il più acuto possibile
: glissando verso il basso, il più grave possibile
nV : non vibrato
pV : poco vibrato
vibr. : vibrato
MV : molto vibrato
= : ogni esecutore segue come tempo metronomico, il proprio ritmo cardiaco.
