Medically speaking, the condition of acidity is a broad term that covers a set of gastric symptoms. The
main symptom among these is a burning sensation behind the sternum (heartburn) or in the upper
abdomen. In medical terms, acidity is known as dyspepsia.
Causes of acidity:
Seen largely to be a lifestyle disease, the triggers for acidity are
1. Binge eating.
2. Consuming food stuff like chocolates, fatty food, spicy food, non-vegetarian food and coffee.
3. Smoking, tobacco chewing, alcohol.
4. Intake of medicines like aspirin, antibiotics, NSAIDs.
5. Stress and depression.
6. GERD (Gastro oesophageal reflux disease), peptic ulcer
Symptoms of acidity:
The symptom of acidity includes a burning sensation behind the sternum (heartburn) or in the upper
abdomen, bitter/acrid burping, water brash (rising of acid contents of stomach in mouth), flatulence (gas),
bloated feeling in the abdomen and associated headache.
Carbo Veg is the best homeopathic medicine for acidity with gas and a bloated abdomen. Even in the case
of belching, homeopathic medicines provide relief. Natrum Phos is highly useful for acidity with sour
belching, sour water brash and sour vomiting. The next medicine, Robinia, is beneficial for heartburn with
belching and water brash of an intensely acrid, bitter character. To use Iris Versicolor for curing acidity,
the indicating feature is a burning sensation in the whole alimentary tract. And Nux Vomica is
recommended for acidity resulting from eating heavy/spicy food, coffee, or alcohol. Iris Versicolor and
Nux Vomica are also suggested for headache with acidity.
Management of acidity:
Here are some simple steps for controlling acidity:
Skip foods that trigger the acidity attacks and remove them from your diet.
Limit or entirely stop taking alcohol and coffee.
Instead of filling the stomach by taking a complete meal at a time divide and take it in 2-3 parts.
Avoid the use of pain killers.
Keep stress at bay as far as possible.
Avoid consuming food stuff immediately before going to bed.
Make it a habit to take a brisk walk daily.
