1. OBJECTIVES & PROCESS SUMMARY

The Sewage Waste water contains many hazardous particles which have adverse effect on
environment upon discharge. So the government has set up the standards parameter of discharge
waste water from Resort.

The objectives of the treatment process is to meet the standard parameter of discharge waste water
so that the discharge treated effluent doesn’t have any negative impact to the environment .Waste
water contains dissolved and suspended organic and inorganic substance having COD and BOD
which is reduced with the help of Biological Treatment, Disinfectant and Activated Carbon
Treatment. Also the colour is removed by the Chemical coagulation process

3. PROCESS DESCRIPTION
3.1. SCREENING

The first unit operation in wastewater treatment plants is screening. The principal role of screening
is to remove the materials like plant, debris, fibre and other large particles from the flow stream that
could damage subsequent process equipment, reduce overall treatment process reliability and
effectiveness, or contaminate waterways. Coarse screen followed by fine screen are employed to
remove different size of solid waste effectively.

3.2. OIL & GREASE TRAP:

Domestic waste water contains fat and oil, grease which floats on the water surface and is
separated by gravity separation process with oil and grease trap. The Oil & Grease is
collected manually from the tank surface. The treated waste water is then passed to the
equalization from the bottom of the tank.

3.3. EQUALIZATION:

Raw effluent from different processing unit contains different parameter and the waste water flow is
not same throughout the day.

In order to ensure a uniform flow into the chemical coagulation treatment, it is necessary to
maintain a minimum residence time in an equalization tank, where the pollutants load is
homogenized and Ensure proper dosing of chemicals with the constant flow. Mixing is done by
aeration with air blower and coarse bubble diffuser.

3.4. PH CORRECTION& NEUTRALIZATION COAGULATION:

After some chemical reaction with the hydroxide the metal is precipitated when pH is neutralized.

In the pH correction unit acid or alkali is used to neutralize the high or low pH respectively. An acid
dosing pump or Automatic pH controller is used to neutralize the pH of water. The maintaining of pH

7
value is important for further Biological treatment. Normally Hydrochloric acid or Sulfuric Acid is
used in the pH neutralization process. pH Correction:

3.5. BIOLOGICAL OXIDATION TANK OR MBBR TANK:

After pH Correction the effluent is feed to the Biological oxidation tank for Secondary Treatment.
This Biological Oxidation system is the most important of the process where the maximum
contaminants are removed from waste water to make the parameter within desired level.

Microorganism like aerobic bacteria, algae, protozoa and amoeba are employed in the biological
oxidation tank for the biological oxidation process. Organic substances which are biodegradable is
oxidized by the microorganism and make a stable product, CO2, H2O and a new cell of
microorganism. The new cell is attached with the sludge formed as the stable product and the
sludge along with the microorganism is recycled continuously to the inlet of the Biological Oxidation
tank to make the sludge always activated. Why this is also called activated sludge process

For Biological oxidation process the required oxygen is transferred with the roots type air blower
with the help of fine bubble diffuser. The fine bubble diffuser increases the efficiency of oxygen
transfer rate.

The major consideration of the biological oxidation tank is Temperature, pH, Dissolve Oxygen,
Recycle of Bio-Sludge and amount of Bio-Sludge per liter of waste water.

8
The major consideration of the biological oxidation tank is

Temperature: ( Must be in Between 4 – 40 ° C and Best Practice is to keep it

between 25 - 35° C )

pH: ( Must be between 6 – 9 and Best practice is to keep between 7.5 – 8.5 )

Dissolve Oxygen: ( DO Must be above 1.5 ppm but do not exceed 4.0 ppm , That
will cause power wastage by blower only )

Recycle of Bio-Sludge: ( As per Design, But normally 20 – 50 % for Bio –Chemical

& (50 – 200 % for Fully Biological)

MLSS: (As per Design, But Normally 2000 – 3000 mg/l For Bio –Chemical Process
& 3000 – 6000 mg/l for Full Biological Process)

3.6. SECONDARY CLARIFICATION:

The biological treatment of waste water using microorganism is called secondary treatment and the
sludge formed by the secondary treatment process is called secondary sludge.

The secondary sludge is also separated by a bottom separation clarifier called secondary clarifier.
The sludge along with the microorganism is settled down and separated from the bottom of the
clarifier by gravity and water is separated from the top of the clarifier.

The parameter is reduced after the separation of sludge in the Secondary clarifier. BOD, COD and
suspended solids reduce in this stage by a certain percentage

In case of higher dimension or capacity of Secondary clarifier a mechanical sludge collector named
scraper arm or Scraper Drive is installed along with the slope of the tank. The Scraper arm collects
the sludge to the center of the tank and separated from there by gravity separation.

Only the calculated Bio-sludge that is to be wasted is sent for further sludge treatment and rest of
the sludge is recycled to the aeration tank to maintain constant and required amount of Bio-mass in
to the Biological oxidation tank or aeration tank.

9
3.7. DISINFECTION:

By adding Sodium hypochlorite to water as an disinfectant chemical, hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is

formed:

NaOCl + H2O → HOCl + NaOH

The hypochlorous acid dissociates into hydrogen ions (H+) and hypochlorite ions in the reversible
reaction.

HOCl ↔ H+ + OCl–

Hypochlorous acid is a weak acid with a pKa of approximately 7.5 at 25 °C. Hypochlorous acid, the
prime disinfecting agent, is therefore dominant at a pH below 7.5 and is a more effective
disinfectant than hypochlorite ion, which dominates above pH 7.5. Sodium hypochlorite is effective
against bacteria, viruses and fungi. Sodium hypochlorite disinfects the same way as chlorine does.

3.8. DUAL MEDIA FILTRATION

Also known as Pressure Sand filters, these are used to remove the turbidity and suspended solids
from the water. The filter media generally used is sand-anthracite, and inside the filter there is a
layered bed of filter media. It provides very efficient particle removal under high filtration rate. It
removes the suspended particles and the odor and color etc. to make the water fit for further
applications with Activated Carbon Filter.

3.9. ACTIVATED CARBON FILTRATION

3.10. POST AERATION OR DO INCREASE:

10
The Effluent after primary treatment with coagulant chemical contain very low level of dissolve
oxygen. Though Oxygen is provided in to the Equalization Tank the Effluent of Inlet contain high
BOD. That means it its oxygen demand is high. So after providing the Oxygen the DO level does not
increase but consumed by the Effluent.

The Secondary treated water having Biological Oxidation and the provided most of the oxygen is
utilized by the microorganism. Moreover there will be MLSS of about 2000 mg/l. That MLSS have a
very high demand of Oxygen. So the Dissolve Oxygen or DO level is low after the secondary
treatment become very low and has to be increased further.

Roots type Air Blower along with fine bubble Disc type air diffuser is employed to provide the
necessary oxygen to the secondary treated water before final discharge. About 1 hr Retention time
is provided to the Treated Effluent that has a very low demand of Dissolve Oxygen (like as BOD < 50
& COD < 200).

So the provided oxygen will be dissolved in the Treated Effluent.

3.11. SLUDGE SUMP:

The sludge collected from Wastage Bio-Sludge and Primary Clarifier to the sludge sump. The solid
content of this sludge is 3-5%. This is to be dried furthermore using Filter Press

3.12. FILTER PRESS/ SLUDGE DRYING BED

Sludge from the thickener is feed to the Filter Press or Sludge Drying Bed for dewatering the sludge.
Filter press separate the water using filter cloth by which the water is passed but the sludge is
entrapped upon providing pressure. But Sludge Drying Bed filter the sludge with media and sun dry
the sludge

After the completion of batch the dry sludge is collected and stored several months so that the
pathogens contain in the sludge become inactive. The Solid content of the dried solid sludge is more
than 25%.
