Mid Semester Exam BE (EE) Course Code: UEE801
Thursday, 08 - 10 AM Sept. 21, 2017 Course Name: Electric Drives
Time: 2 Hours, Max. Marks: 25 Name of Faculty: Dr. Amrita Sinha, Mr. Ashish Paramane
Note: Attempt all questions in given sequence only.

1. (a) Explain different parts of electrical drive with their operation in brief.
[3]
(b) A drive has following parameters: J = 1, Kg-m2, T = 15 - 0.001N, Nm and passive load torque T1 =
0.005N, Nm, Where N is the speed in rpm. Initially the drive is working in steady state. Now it is to be
reversed. For this motor characteristic is altered such that T = (-15-0.001N), Nm for positive as well as
negative values of N. Calculate the reversal time. [2]
2. (a) Derive an expression for moment of inertia of flywheel required for load equalization.
[3]
(b) Determine the stability of intersection points A, B, C, D in Fig. 1. [2]
3. (a) Derive equations of moment of inertia and load torque for motor coupled to translational load with
suitable diagram. [2]
(b) Based on the rms torque, estimate the kW rating of 750 rpm motor used for driving an having the
load torque curve shown in Fig. 2.

4. (a) Derive an expression for overloading factor `K' for short term duty cycle of motor. [2]
(b) A motor has a thermal time constant of 45 minutes. When the motor runs continuously on full load,
its final temperature rise is 80°C.
(i) What is the temperature rise after 1 hour if the motor runs continuously on full load?
(ii) If the temperature on 1 hour rating is 80°C, find the steady state temperature at this rating.
(iii) How much time does the motor take for its temperature to rise from 50°C to 80°C if is working at its
1 hour rating?
[3]
5. (a) Derive the relation between speed and torque and their characteristics for (i) separately excited
motors and (ii) series motors. [3]
(b) A 220 V DC shunt motor takes 22 A at rated voltage and runs at 1000 rpm. Its field resistance is
l00) and armature circuit resistance is 0.1g. Compute the value of additional resistance required in the
armature circuit to reduce the speed to 800rpm when the load torque is proportional to speed. [2]

The Answer sheets will shown on 3rd Oct. 2017 in D207 at 5PM Group 1,2,3 and 5:30PM Group 4,5,6
