ABSTRACT

In most of the Garages and other commercial vehicle repair and service stations
for lifting the vehicle various lifting devices are used. But when there is need of lifting
the vehicle outside on the road, it is very difficult to do this operation manually which
requires more human efforts. Hence the need is of a powered jack. Research is
performed on a Toggle Jack so as to operate it just by pressing the switch due to
motorized movement, the vehicle gets lifted up to the required height and can be
lowered within a short time.
CHAPTER – 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND:-
The present idea relates generally to the field of load lifting devices. It
has been generally known to utilize lifting devices of the screw type and pivoted
lever type for the elevating, lowering of rigid loads in load bearing structures as
represented by car, motor vans and such type of vehicles.
As Manual operation of the toggle jack requires considerable human
efforts and more time to raise or lower the load, there by arising need of making
jack motorized which reduces human efforts and requires less time for the
operation.

1.2 INTRODUCTION:-

Fig. 1.1- Remote Controlled Toggle Jack

Fig. 1.2 Jack used when vehicle is under maintenance

The present idea relates to improvement in the emergency changing of

automobiles tires and more particularly it relates to a portable automobile jack which
operates automatically.

It is well known to have various types of lifting equipments to aid in the

changing of a tire or to perform other types of jobs that require raising or lowering of
car. The most common part of equipment is the basic hand operated jack which is a
standard accessory in most automobiles.

Fig. 1.2 shows the basic principle of the operation of toggle jack when vehicle
is under maintenance. Upper part of the jack is only part which comes in contact with
axle of vehicle. This contact will give rigid support to the jack when it is kept under the
vehicle.

In order to reduce the total human efforts and time required for the operation,
jacks have been made motorized. It is the object of the idea to facilitate tire changing
in regard to ease, speed and safety. Further object o9f the idea is to provide and
improved auto jack system powered through 12V DC power supply or battery of the
vehicle.

Now a days, there are numerous shapes of in-0place jacks, but these have in
general been hand operated, motor driven screw types, hydraulically actuated pivoted
lever types or otherwise of a structure which makes them inherently adapted for the
intended purpose, or economically so expensive as to prevent their general use and
acceptance.
1.3 NEED:-
The need has been arises for an improved portable jack for automotive vehicles.
It is highly desirable that a jack become available that can be operated from a
location near to the vehicle to be repaired. Such a jack should be light weight
and compact enough so that it can be stored in an automobile trunk. This can be
lifted up and carried by most adults to its position of use. The total setup is
capable of lifting a vehicle of about 1 tone to 2 tone weight above the ground.
Further, it should be stable and easily controllably by a toggle switch so that
lifting can be done from a position to use. Furthermore, an arrangement can be
made the whole assembly should be illuminated so that it can be easily
positioned and operated in the dark. It should be easily movable either to a
position under the axle of the vehicle or some other supportive surface designed
to be engaged by a jack. Thus it is very essential to make the jack motorized and
make the human more comfortable when required, with less effort to operate
the device and to reduce total time of the operation of jack.
CHAPTER – 2
CONCEPT
2.1 CONCEPTS OF PROJECT MODEL

Conceptual Sketch of Motorized Toggle Jack

Fig: 2.1 shows the concept of making motorized jack relates for lifting vehicles,
automobiles, vans and trucks for tire changes and other repairs with minimum human
efforts. The conventional jack which is designed to be carried in the trunk of a car
requires hard manual operation to enable the vehicle to be raised or lowered to the
required height. Garages and other commercial vehicle repair and service stations are
equipped with mechanized lifts which are raised or lowered by means of electrically
controlled, hydraulic or pneumatic systems. Until recently, no motorized jack has been
available to a driver on the road in a vehicle with a tire to change. An assembly is now
available including a motorized jack which is used to be raised or lowered by power
derived from the portable other sources.

The type of motorized jack presently available in the market has certain
disadvantages, in that it is difficult to carry and to use, and is not readily disassembled
to be carried or stored. Furthermore, it is not adapted for use with a standard jack is
designed by the manufacturer of special types of vans.
Accordingly, it is the principal object of this structure is to provide a kit for a
motorized jack assembly which is readily assembled and disassembled for storage and
transport. A more particular objective of the invention is to provide means for
collaborating with a type of jack which is conventionally furnished as standard
equipment for certain types of vans, which when the jack is applied to the rear axle or
bumper of a vehicle, may be operated electrically to enable the vehicle to be raised
quickly and conventionally, with minimum effort on the part of the operator.
CHAPTER – 3
WORKING OF
PROJECT MODEL
3.1 WORKING:-

The motorized toggle jack is useful for lifting a vehicle under maintenance. For
this model, unit is externally fitted to the toggle jack available in the market. A spur
gear pair is used to transmit motion to screw of the jack. A high starting torque is used
to give motion to the gear pair which will further results in rotation of the lead screw of
the jack which is extended lengthwise.

Gear pair is designed to provide a fixed gear reduction ratio to the rotating shaft.
This unit consists of a conventional low voltage, direct current electric motor which is
constructed to be driven by 12V DC supply from an outlet source. The motor shaft and
connected reduction gear train are adapted to be connected to the jack through a
mounting plate welded to free block of the toggle jack. This plate supports the motor
and the reduction gears.

Fig. 3.1- Model of Motorized Toggle Jack

Depending upon rotation of the lead screw by motor, the nut travels along the
lead screw moving the arms and of each linkage toward and away from each other to
raise and lower the jack. The jack fixed to a stable base.

When jack is at maximum height, at its upper end is connected to the pad to
engage the rear axle or bumper of the vehicle.

The jack is provided with a pair of elongated, flexible connecting cables. Theses
cables are connectable to the power supply and the motor. This causes the gear to rotate
and the motion is transferred to the threaded screw. This all leads to lift the vehicle to
a required height. A hand-held, portable toggle switch is connected to the motor circuit
by flexible cables. The switch is provided with a forward switch used for energizing the
motor to raise the jack and a second backward switch for reversing the motor and
thereby lowering the jack. A kit of motorized jack will weigh approximately 8kg. This
will be easily carried out by most of the motorist.

It will be understood that the present structure provides a portable kit which can
be easily carried with a jack in the trunk of a car, or van or other vehicle and is adapted
to be positioned to raise the vehicle for changing a tire, or for other necessary repairs.
CHAPTER – 4
PARTS USED
The motorized toggle jack model requires precise meshing of gears used for
motion transfer and requires 12V DC supply. This assembly as a whole consists of
various components used for different purposes.

Following are the main components used in the motorized jack model.

1) Fixed Block of the toggle jack

2) Gear pair
3) Motor
4) Motor mounting plate
5) Angle Plate
6) Lead screw of the jack.

4.1 FIXED BLOCK OF THE JACK

Fig. 4.1-= Fixed Block of the jack

This is only place where the unit of gear and motor can be attached to the jack.
It is called as fixed block since it cannot moves according to9 movement of the jack.
The shaded region shown in the figure is the critical region where attachment of gear-
motor can be made with jack. There is another block provided on either side of the jack
called nut having internal threads through which lead screw can pass. As it is free to
move it is not useful mounting of gear and motor unit.
4.2 GEAR PAIR:-

For motion or power transfer there is need of some mechanical drive such as
belt drives, chain drives, rope drives, couplings, joints, gear drives etc. Out of these
gear drives are easy to use and cheaper which requires less operating space we utilize
the spur gear pair for motion transfer. Details of these are mentioned below:

4.3. MOTOR:-

The driving motor used is a wiper motor. A 12 V DC supply is given to the

motor. This motor gives high starting torque which is required for the working of the
project mode. The motor drives the pinion keyed to it which will rotate the gear on the
lead screw as they are meshing to each other. The speed reduction is obtained sue to
difference in pitch circle diameter of both gear and pinion. Figure shows motor used in
the setup.

The specifications of the motor are as follows:-

Type = Wiper motor

Current = 10 mill ampere

Voltage = 12 volts.

Speed = 40 rpm

Power = HP
4.4 MOTOR MOUNTING PLATE:-

Here the motor mounting plate made of mild steel material having particular
shape as shown in figure. The design of plate is carried out by considering the type of
motor to be used. As motor has one shaft and two studs provided for locking purpose,
there are three slots mode on the plate. Through the middle slot shaft of motor can pass
and two studs can pass through adjacent slots provided on the plate.

The provision made to adjust center to center distance between the gears. On
the other side a hole of outer diameter of screw that is 15mm is made so that lead screw
can pass through is.

Fig. 4.4 Motor Mounting Plate

The plate is then welded to the fixed block with the help of a small angle plate
whose one end is welded to the fixed block and another is welded to the mounting plate.

This motor mounting plate gives support to the motor and gears in engaged
condition.
4.5 ANGLE PLATE:-

Fig. 4.5 – Angle Plate

This is the small component called as angle plate made of mild steel material
which is used to fix the motor mounting plate and fixed block of the toggle jack. One
end of the angle plate is welded to the fixed block and another end is welded to the
mounting plate. This provides a rigid support to motor mounting plate.
4.6 LEAD SCREW OF JACK:-

It is the most important part of the whole assembly. The rotation of the lead
screw into nut of toggle jack is responsible for vertical movements of jack results in
automatic lifting of load placed above on upper plate.

CONCLUSION
6.1 CONCLUSION:-

While concluding this report, we will quite contend in having completed the
project assignment well on the time. We had got the practical experience on
manufacturing of the working project model> The entire credit goes to the healthy co-
ordination of our project group in bringing out a resourceful fulfillment of our
assignment prescribed by University.

Although the design criterions imposed challenging problems which however

were overcome by us due to availability of good reference books. The selection of
choice raw materials helped us in machining of the various components to very close
tolerances and thereby minimizing the level of wear and tear.

This is an attempt made, by attaching gear-motor unit which will remote

controlled the toggle jack used for lifting light weight vehicle. This gives minimum
human effort while operating the jack.

The great experience gained by us is during the period of project work will
surely beneficial for the betterment of our prospects in future.
