Assignment 4 Solution

1) A charged particle A exerts a force of 2.62 N to the right on charged particle B when the particles
are 13.7 mm apart. Particle B moves straight away from A to make the distance between them 17.7
mm. What vector force does it then exert on A?

Solution

2) (a) Two protons in a molecule are 3.80 × 10-10 m apart. Find the electrical force exerted by one
proton on the other. (b) State how the magnitude of this force compares with the magnitude of the
gravitational force exerted by one proton on the other. (c) What If? What must be a particle’s charge-
to-mass ratio if the magnitude of the gravitational force between two of these particles is equal to the
magnitude of electrical force between them?

3. Three charged particles are located at the corners of an equilateral triangle as shown in Figure

5. What are the magnitude and direction of the electric field that balances the weight of (a) an
electron and (b) a proton?

Solution

6. Figure 3 shows the electric field lines for two charged particles separated by a small distance.
(a) Determine the ratio q1/q2. (b) What are the signs of q1 and q2?

Solution

7. Three equal positive charges q are at the corners of an equilateral triangle of side a as shown
in Figure 4.

(a) Assume the three charges together create an electric field. Sketch the field lines in the plane of
the charges. Find the location of one point (other than ) where the electric field is zero.
(b) What are the magnitude and direction of the electric field at P due to the two charges at the
base?

Solution

a) The electric field has the general appearance shown. It is zero at the
center, where (by symmetry) one can see that the three charges
individually produce fields that cancel out. In addition to the center of
the triangle, the electric field lines in the second figure to the right
indicate three other points near the middle of each leg of the triangle
where E = 0, but they are more difficult to find mathematically.

b) The electric field at point P can be found by adding the electric field
vectors due to each of the two lower point charges:

The electric field from a point charge is:

8. (a) Calculate the speed of a proton that is accelerated from rest through a potential difference
of 120 V. (b) Calculate the speed of an electron that is accelerated through the same potential
difference. Draw a free-body diagram for each block.

9. The difference in potential between the accelerating plates in the electron gun of a television
picture tube is about 25 000 V. If the distance between these plates is 1.50 cm, what is the
magnitude of the uniform electric field in this region?
Solution

10. At a certain distance from a charged particle, the magnitude of the electric field is 500 V/m
and the electric potential is 3.00 kV. (a) What is the distance to the particle? (b) What is the
magnitude of the charge?
