9. A car is travelling at constant speed along a road and drives over a large patch of oil. The
driver applies the brakes to stop the car.
Compared to braking on a dry road, what may happen?

A. The car slows down more quickly because of the greater friction between the tyres and

C. The car takes longer to slow down because of the reduced friction between the tyres
and the road.
D. The car takes longer to slow down because the thinking distance of the driver is

1. The fishing vessel, ABC, shown in the diagram below, is moving forward in a straight line at
a constant velocity with a forward engine thrust of 200 N.
Upthrust by water

ABC

Forward thrust

Resistive force water

Weight of vessel
(a) On the diagram above, label all possible forces acting on the vessel. Assume that air
resistance is negligible. [2]

(b) What is the value of the total resistive force acting on the fishing vessel? [1]

Total resistance force = forward thrust = 200N

(c) The forward engine thrust of the vessel is suddenly increased to 1000 N.

(i) Calculate the resultant forward force on the vessel. [1]

Resultant forward force = 1000 – 200 = 800N

(ii) State and explain the changes in the motion of the vessel. [2]

Resultant force is no longer zero.

The vessel is now accelerating.

(iii) If the upthrust exerted by the water on the vessel is 100 kN, what is the mass of
the vessel? [2]

Weight of vessel = upthrust by water = 100kN = 100 000N

Mass of vessel = 100 000 / 10 = 10 000 kg

2. When a block of wood of mass 2.0 kg was pushed along the horizontal flat surface of a
bench with a force of 4.0 N, it moved with a constant speed.
When the block was pushed along the same bench with a force of 10.0 N, it moved with a
constant acceleration, a.

(a) What is the frictional force acting on the body when it is moving at constant speed ?
[1]
Frictional force = 4.0 N
(b) Calculate the constant acceleration, a. [3]

Resultant force = 10.0 - 4.0

3
= 6.0 N

F =ma
F 6.0
acceleration, a = = = 3.0 m/s2
m 2.0
