A very good morning I bid to the principal, teachers and my dear students. Firstly, I would like
to thank the organizing committee of the alumni for giving me this opportunity to talk on this
fine stage. Walking up this stage is one of the biggest prideful moments for me. On this fine
morning, I would like to talk about why breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Food
plays a very important role in our lives, especially breakfast is the most important meal for
humans.

Let me ask you some questions. How many of you take your breakfast every day? Why is
it important for us to take our breakfast? According to Madore’s article “The importance of
starting your Day with breakfast” about 15% of school age children are not eating their breakfast.
At least 30% of elementary school children are going to school at least one day a week on an
empty stomach and 20% are going without twice a week. He also stated that the older the
children, the more likely they will skip breakfast. As the Nutritionist, Adele David famously put
it back in the 1960 “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.” This
statement shows us the breakfast is considered to be the most important meal of the day.

Before I begin my talk, let me explain to you about what is breakfast. The word breakfast
is made by two words, which are break and fast. According to the Cambridge Dictionary (2018),
the word ‘break’ means to interrupt or stop the continuity of something. Meanwhile, the word
‘fast’ is the derived from the word ‘fasting’ which means to abstain from all or some kinds of
food or drink (Cambridge Dictionary, 2018). When we go to sleep, we will stop consuming any
type of food or drinks throughout the night. Hence, the first meal we take in the morning after
rising from a night’s sleep is called breakfast.

A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition reports that when we do not eat
breakfast, our energy is reduced. Thus, eating breakfast readies and boosts up our energy for the
whole day activities. In general, kids and students who eat breakfast everyday have more energy
to do better in school activities. This will help when the students are required to do physical
activities such as running, playing football or badminton. For example, when participating in the
co-academic and sports day activities, students need a lot of energy to perform their best. So, in
this situation we should eat breakfast to ensure the increase of our energy level.

Other than that, taking breakfast could also improve the students’ cognitive performance.
The students’ breakfast eating habit will ensure the supply of nutrients to the brain.
Consequently, this will help them to perform well in their studies. For example, eating healthy
breakfast, prepares the students to face the classroom activities. It will help them to think
effectively and actively participate in classroom activities. A study has revealed that pupils who
eat cereal, whole grain, vegetables and fruits for their breakfast tend to score high marks in the
test. According to a study published in the journal Archieves of Pediatrics and Adolesment
Medicine, “students who increase their participation in school breakfast program had significant
higher math scores than students who skipped or rarely ate breakfast. Nevertheless, the act of
eating breakfast also decreased rates of tardiness and absences among students. So, my dear
students, in order to show off your talents and perform well in your studies, you should take your
breakfast every day.

My dear students,

Additionally, taking breakfast also helps to increase the students’ concentration level in
the classroom. Students who eat a low-glycemic, balanced breakfast may have better
concentration and more positive reactions to difficult tasks compared to students who eat a
carbohydrates–laden breakfast. According to a research published in the Physiology and
Behaviour journal, by consuming a low glycemic breakfast, the students were able to sustain
attention for a longer period compared to the children given a high-glycemic breakfast.
Moreover, it was identified that children who followed the breakfast plan had improved memory
and fewer signs of frustrations when working on school tasks.

Besides increasing the students’ concentration level, eating breakfast also improves the
brain’s functions. For example, a student who has had his breakfast can retrieve/ remember the
learning information quickly compared to a student who has skipped breakfast. Recently, our
government has been stressing on the 21st century learning, whereby the students are prepped to
be critical thinkers who can solve problems.

My dear teachers, parents and students,

You might be wondering right now about the connection of breakfast with 21st century learning.
In Malaysia, most of the schools are of morning session. Hence, the classes and activities will be
conducted in the morning. During the lesson, the teachers will prepare many activities and
projects to hone the students’ critical thinking skill. Thus, in order to understand the tasks and
think critically, the students must be physically prepared. eating breakfast can help students in
the learning process. Such as problem solving you have to get a strong memory and mind that
related current issues to the lesson in class.

Breakfast is an important meal of the day for the students because to maintain a healthy
weight and keep fit body. Dear students if you eating breakfast regularly it will help you to keep
fit the body. For example, according to a study published in ‘Public Health Nutrition’ children
who never taken and skipped the breakfast eating breakfast in the morning can avoid overeat and
have a lower overall diet quality then children who eat breakfast every day. It able to led to
increased body mass index BMI measurement. For instance, breakfast contains a balance of
proteins, fats and carbohydrates can keep blood sugar level steady for hours, by the way
according mealsmatter.org try some toast with peanut butter and a piece of fruit or cereal with
milk and glass of fruit juice, based to Nutrionist Sachin Karpe says, ‘you break your night long
last with this meal’

Besides that, students must not skip your breakfast because it supplies vital nutrients to
your body. Eating a healthy breakfast is a great opportunity to eat nutritious food, that provide
our body with multi vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals are important to body for
proper growth and maintenance, carbohydrates and protein metabolism, bone strength and a
healthy immune system. For example, the core of a healthy breakfast consists breakfast of whole
grain, cereals, bran muffins, cheese, fruits and vegetables which are significant sources of
vitamins C and D, calcium, iron and fibre. For example, in Britain and USA breakfast often
include carbohydrates, fibre, calcium, protein, vitamins and minerals. In Japan, breakfast
provided equally nutrients by salads and soups

Finally, students should taking breakfast because to keep healthy life style. By avoiding
disease and sickness students can keep their life with healthy. Such as, if you all skipping

breakfast it will make yours stomach empty so that it can make your stomach pain, headache
illness. It will make students to unconcentrate in the lesson. So students you will be careless and
can’t focus on the lesson. If you all skip your breakfast it will give impact in your studies, health
and life style. In this matter students you all should taking your breakfast every day before go to
school.

Well kids, before I end my talk let me stress that you all should not lack of in this
breakfast meal. You must look after it, the best way to do this is to ensure that you are eating
breakfast without skipping it. As a school students you all should taking breakfast before enter
the school because there are a lot of benefits. There are many reason to eat breakfast everyday as
I told earlier. By eating breakfast you all can get more energy, more concentration, maintain a
healthy body weight, increase cognitive and keep healthy life by avoiding disease. So no
breakfast there not recharge in your body and brain. We all need food but at the same time we
must follow up the meals with correct time to be a healthy students. Or the other hands, if you
continue skip your breakfast it will affected your study environment. The choice is yours. I hope
you will, therefore, be wise and keep healthy body and mind.
