About PV Advanced
PV Advanced is the state-of-the-art network management system to administer Proxim’s devices on the network. It
offers the following network management and monitoring features:
• Network Management --> Network Discovery, Geographical and Logical Maps
• Fault Management --> Event Logs and Alarms
• Performance Management --> Statistics Collection and Analysis
• Security Management --> User Provisioning
• Scheduled Bulk Operations and Task --> Backup, Software Upgrade, Profile Based Configuration, and Bulk
SNMP Parameter Configuration
• Configuration Management --> Device Configuration
• Administration --> Redundancy and Active Directory Settings
• Basic Controller --> Auto Discovery, Configuration and Firmware Upgrade
• Advanced Controller --> Access Point, Clients RF Management, AutoChanneling, Channel Management and
Encryption Key Configuration

System Requirements
PV Advanced Server needs a dedicated server machine, so before installing PV Advanced, check the following system
requirements for best results:
• Database: Recommended PostgreSQL v9.6.5 database (also supports v9.2.20).
• Hardware:

Database Installation
To install PostgreSQL 9.6.5 on the server, follow the given steps:

1. Run PostgreSQL 9.6.5 (postgresql-9.6.5-1-windows-x86.exe /


postgresql-9.6.5-1-windows-x64.exe). The Setup screen is
displayed. Click Next to proceed with the installation.

2. Specify installation folder, choose your own or keep the


default folder suggested by PostgreSQL installer.

3. Enter the password for the database superuser and service


account.

NOTE: Keep a record of this password as it is required


during PV Advanced Installation.

4. Enter the port number for PostgreSQL. Ensure that no other


applications are using this port. Leave it as default if you are
unsure.

NOTE: Do not change the default port unless required. In


case your are changing the default port, remember
to provide the same port during PV Advanced
installation.
5. Choose the default locale used by the database.

6. You’ve completed providing information for the PostgreSQL


installer. Click the Next button to install PostgreSQL

7. The installation may take few minutes to complete. Click the


Finish button to complete the PostgreSQL installation.

NOTE: In PostgreSQL, by default, each user is limited to 100 connections. For good performance, it is highly
recommended to increase the connections to 500. To see the procedure for increasing the connections, see
Appendix B - Increase of Max Connections in PostgreSQL in the PV Advanced v2.1.0 Installation and

Management Guide available at http://support.proxim.com. The recommended number of PostgreSQL
connections for various network sizes are tabulated below:

Procedure to upgrade from PostgreSQL v9.2.2 to PostgreSQL v9.2.20


To upgrade from PostgreSQL 9.2.2 to i. Verify the version of PostgreSQL currently installed
PostgreSQL 9.2.20 follow these steps: ii. Save the PV Advanced Database, Static Map and License
File
iii. Uninstall PV Advanced
iv. Uninstall PostgreSQL v9.2.2
v. Install the updated version of PostgreSQL (v9.2.20)
vi. Install PV Advanced
vii. Upload the saved Database

Procedure to upgrade from PostgreSQL v9.2.x to PostgreSQL v9.6.5


To upgrade from PostgreSQL 9.2.20 to i. Verify the version of PostgreSQL currently installed
PostgreSQL 9.6.5 follow these steps: ii. Backup the PV Advanced database using the Standalone
Database Backup Utility.
iii. Backup the Static and Indoor maps and License file.
iv. Uninstall the existing version of PV Advanced
v. Uninstall the existing version of PostgreSQL.
vi. Install the updated version of PostgreSQL (v9.6.5)
vii. Install the updated version of PV Advanced (v2.1.0)
viii. Restore the Database, Maps and License files.For more

PV Advanced 2.1.0 Installation

IMPORTANT!

• Ensure to backup the database using the Standalone Database Backup Utility before uninstalling the
existing PV Advanced / PostgreSQL.
• To Install PV Advanced 2.1.0 server, ensure that the port numbers 69,162, 443, 2720, 2721, 5432 and
8080 are free.

To Install PV Advanced 2.1.0 follow the procedure given below:

NOTES:
• For better efficiency, choose the appropriate executable file and network size based on the number of devices
to be managed in the network. The recommended options are tabulated below:

1. Double-click the PV Advanced executable file. The Setup -


PV Advanced screen appears. Click Next to proceed with
the installation.

2. During the installation process, PV Advanced internally


scans the ports for its availability. If the port is not available,
it will display a message to indicate the port occupancy. If
you still wish to continue, click OK; make the port available
and start the server manually.

3. The License Agreement screen is displayed. Read the


license agreement and then select I accept the
agreement. Click Next.

4. The Select Destination Directory screen is displayed.


Click Next.

5. The Select Start Menu Folder screen is displayed. Select


the Start Menu folder to create PV Advanced shortcut and
click Next.

6. The Select Additional Tasks screen is displayed. Select the


additional tasks (like creating the desktop icon) to be
performed and click Next.

7. The installation process starts.

8. On completing the installation process, the Database


Setup screen is displayed. Click Next.

NOTE: It is recommended to strictly follow the


PV Advanced & PostgreSQL installation
instructions in the adjacent screen.

9. The setup prompts to provide the Postgres database


installation path. Browse for the installation path and
click Next.

10. The Optimize Server Settings screen is displayed. Select


the appropriate network and click Next.
– For 32-bit executable file, this screen is displayed.

– For 64-bit executable file, this screen is displayed.

11. By default, the Enable Compaction checkbox is selected.


Click Next.
NOTE:
• The Data Compaction utility enables you to explicitly
compact all the existing data without data loss. Only if
data compaction is enabled, PV Advanced collects the
compacted data else it takes the data from short term
table.
• ‘Enable Compaction’ option appears only during the
first time installation. It doesnot appear during the
software upgrade procedure.

12. Click Finish to complete installation.

NOTE:

• The PV Advanced server and database run as a service in windows, and by default will start when windows
restart. Use Check Server Status utility (Navigate to Start > All Programs > PV Advanced > Utilities) to
check the status of the server.
• It is recommended to configure only one IP Address on the NIC adapter of the PV Advanced Server.

Technical Support
You can launch PV Advanced 2.1.0 through a remote client or a local client (through a server where PV Advanced 2.1.0
is residing).

To launch PV Advanced through a local client, do To launch PV Advanced through a remote client (.jnlp),
one of the following: you must install Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
• Click PV Advanced icon, or Type the server IP address in the web browser by
• Navigate to Start > All Programs > PV using SSL/https protocol. Say, https: //172.18.18.86.
Advanced > PV Advanced Client Download and run PVClient.jnlp
You are directed to PV Advanced Login screen. Navigate to PV Advanced login screen by following
the instructions in the screens that appear.
